Roxana Saberi, the Iranian-American journalist sentenced to eight years in an Iranian jail, has told her parents that she confessed to spying for the US after she was threatened with death.
In an interview with George Stephanopoulos, Roxana's parents said the 31-year-old freelancer who has worked for BBC and NPR plans on starting a hunger strike tomorrow from jail. The tactic will surely raise awareness for Roxana's plight and put more pressure on the US to help her.
President Obama has given his personal word that Roxana is not a spy, but Stephanopoulos, who also spoke with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, asked the Iranian president if that would be enough to convince him to release Roxana as a gesture of good will. His response was not promising: Obama, he said, could offer good will by letting Iran's judiciary operate without interference.

I hope she will be able to come home soon... I heard an interview with her father and he says that his daughter is very frail and he's afraid that she won't last much longer
1I hate to say it, and I certainly hope that she makes it home, but I'm not optimistic on this one. As much as people want to think we can get friendly with Iran, I think this makes it pretty clear that they're not interested. And if she's already admitted to spying, well, I don't think there's much we can do. I mean, if we caught an Iranian spy on US soil... they'd probably already have been executed. And I'm not trying to say that's right, but it's life.
So while I'm still hoping for the best from this situation, the least we can do now is use this incident, no matter what the outcome, to learn something about who our friends really are...
2I really hope that I am wrong but I don't think she will ever leave that prison. Iran is not known for mercy. I hope that she will at least serve her time and be released without issue. This is a sad situation that continues to show us that we should not be dealing with Iran on friendly terms at all.

My heart goes out to these journalists and their families.
5reesie, Thanks for that article. It is very sad. It's good to get other situations noticed. You should post that in a blog too!
