So you got invited to an engagement party. Fun! But what should you bring?
First things first: you are almost never required to bring a present to an engagement party. In fact, bringing something too extravagant could be considered poor taste. The couple will get plenty of gifts at the wedding, so you don't want to overdo it at the more informal gathering.
But, if you're like me, you probably want to share your excitement for the couple by offering them a thoughtful gift. Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Lighten up: Depending on the couple's sense of humor they may get a chuckle out of a book like Honeymooners Forever: Twelve Step Marriage Survival Guide.
- DIY: You could team up with friends to make a photo memory book of good times shared among the couple and your group of friends. Or you could put together a book of well-wishes from the guests and present it to the couple.
- Keep it simple: a nice bottle of wine or a fancy box of chocolates shows that you're in the mood to celebrate.
- Stick with the planning theme: Planning a Wedding to Remember: The Perfect Wedding Planner would be thoughtful and useful.
- Be sincere: A heartfelt card might make the best gift of all.

never been to an engagement party..these are some really good tips, i would have no idea really what to bring..the next time i get an invite i'm taking a nice bottle of wine.
1I think the best cue is to think of your relationship to the couple. If you are a casual friend then a wedding planner may not be cool if there are closer friends like a BFF or sister who are familiar with wedding planning. I got unsolicited wedding planners and was like WTH?
2a friend and i brought these nice cupcakes and flowers to my friends engagement party..
3Whatever happened to throwing a party and not expecting loads of presents in return?
I don't bring gifts to engagement parties. There are showers and weddings for that.
I definitely bring a card though.
4There are engagement parties? I have been on this earth 35 years and never heard of even one person having one.
5CG, seriously? i know a Greek couple who had about 6 engagement parties....excessive, yes, but i think most couples have one...just a family BBQ sometimes or a dinner at a supper club etc.
6skigurl, seriously, and I work and are friends with alot of people, whose weddings I have attended.
7Bottle of wine - useful and cheap !
