A brisk walk is my surefire way to beat a bad mood. The small dose of exercise, fresh air, and freedom from distraction always does the trick.
Looking for its own cure, BBC rounded up tips from mental health professionals on how to best beat the blues.
Some of my favorites include:
- Garden: it forces you to focus on the task at hand.
- Exercise: physical activity releases endorphins.
- Cook a meal from scratch: cooking gets your mind off what's bothering you, and a tasty meal will reward you for your work.
- Volunteer: finding time to do even something small for someone else will boost your spirits.
You can check out the whole list here. I'm curious: what do you do to beat the blues?

actually the weight issue is #1thing that doesn't make me sad but can keep me depressed for days even if i exercised
1but other then the weight issue if im sad i listen to dance music, call my friends and hangout and nothing can make you feel better more than shopping!!
shopping used to be my go-to, now it's exercise! and this is weird, but selling stuff on ebay is a certain anti-depressant: I FEEL like I'm shopping, I make money, and I clean out my closet.
2Brisk walk w/ my ipod/cellphone playing an 80s or 90s playlist.... always cheers me up. Or driving to the beach, blasting and singing one hit wonders. Does the job every time.... (and shopping, but I limited that a bit hehe)
3Usually watching some of my favorite shows or movies does the trick. But when I'm too upset to even concentrate on that I like going to the gym. The endorphins help, and focusing on the reps I'm doing takes my mind off what's bothering me...
4Definitely cooking or baking. If I'm upset, expect to find 4 or 5 dozen cookies littering my kitchen, or a huge tray of homemade mac-and-cheese.
I'm pretty good, though ... when I'm sad-baking I don't then eat a million cookies .. I just feed other people =]
5Shopping. Or at least, window shopping. I even find helping friends shop (playing personal stylist) relaxes me.
6I think the exercise thing only works if you're mildly upset. I've lost track of how many times I've left the gym because I've started crying while thinking about something else.
7I don't I just live with it. Volunteering does not really do that much for me.
8I watch Lord of the RIngs the Fellowship of the RIng, which I am doing now. It just makes me happy.
9I like to put on some music and just dance. It really lifts my spirit.
10To beat the blues I do a couple things. First find some upbeat music. Putting on some good music and just dancing till you can't dance anymore will make you laugh at how weird I am and gives me a good workout! Second is pampering myself. Usually when I get the blues its because something about my image has me down. I will get my hair done, mani pedi, trip to spa or shop finding that one outfit that you know people will compliment you on!
11All these things help get me out of my funk!
I used to cheer myself up by checking out gigglesugar, but now that's been replaced with articles about depression.
Not quite the same.
12I accept my feelings. I let it wash over me, feel it, and move on. I don't deny my feelings, or try to distract myself.
13I go rub Gracie's tummy, then take her for a walk. Works every time
14Apparently i'll start to feel better if i cut tressugar during the weekend. I had no idea that someone thought it would be a splendid idea to do away with Sunday Confessionals and Dearsugar needs your help. It's 4:40pm est and nothing has been posted in 10 hrs. Damn!
15All of the above! Sometimes, when my mind is racing I just have a glass of wine & play relaxing music to chill out. Breathe deep. Play with my dogs. Go for a run, especially when the sun is shining (vitamin D). Focus on postive thoughts & surround myself with positive people. Have a laugh, whether it's looking for a funny comic strip or watching a comedy movie or listening to a funny song. Say a prayer. I could go on & on...
16off topic, but where is sunday confessional???!!!!!!!
17Oh yeah, I'm totally hating Tres Sugar too... killed the sugar blogs for me... rarely even on here now... how depressing, i used to love this site.
18I like to exercise or go for a walk with my dog. Sometimes I also like to put on my favorite music and sing along with it while I'm driving. I gotta be careful not to speed when I do that though...I'm prone to driving with a lead foot when I'm upset.
19I miss DEARSUGAR !!!
20I'll start cleaning around the house and do work to distract myself.
21Watch Veronica Mars and swoon over her and Logan
Bake... am... talk to my mum.
22I usually find one of my cats to pet. They're good listeners too.
23I call my mom. She can always make me feel better.
p.s. where is sunday confessional. I always look forward to it on Sundays. I can't believed they cut it.
24I'll do anything that makes me feel accomplished, be it go for a walk, cooking a meal, cleaning the bathroom etc.
25this is love & sex?
26i take my laptop to the bed and watch a movie and i just focus on the movie and dont think of the matter bothering me .
27it always helps forget the problem, but it never solves it.
Yep, I agree, just another thing they did to ruin the Sugar site. They just keeping doing these things...I hate to say it, but it almost seems self destructive. This Tressugar thing is not even close to DearSugar
28Not to mention I could write a list of about 20+ bugs on teh sugar site
I put on music and I dance.
29Working out, or doing yoga helps or just calling a friend up, or grabbing a coffee!!!
30Going for a drive through the mountains is my favorite, but I've been known to use retail therapy on occasion.
31Usually I'll take a trip down the 90's lane - from movies to music to tv shows, that era cheers me up, for some weird reason. I also like to cook something new/experiment or go out and try a new food
32Booze, shopping...horrible, I know!
