Revelations about Wayne Anthony Ross, Sarah Palin's choice for Alaska attorney general, have me wondering: what did she possibly see in him?
Some of the accusations leveled against Ross include: he's called homosexuals "degenerates," ridiculed an African-American student who was offended by a KKK art project, worked to undermine Native American tribal sovereignty, and defended men who rape their wives. Is there anyone he hasn't managed to affront? Oh yeah, straight white men.
The accusation that he is a defender of marital rape got his confirmation off track this week. An antidomestic-violence lobbyist sent a letter to the Alaskan legislature accusing Ross of saying in 1991: "If a guy can't rape his wife, who's he gonna rape?" Ross denied making the comments.
But women's rights groups say Ross has a habit of making antiwoman remarks. He allegedly once said: "If a woman would keep her mouth shut, there wouldn't be an issue with domestic violence."
If Sarah Palin wants to win back the women's vote for Republicans in 2012, she'd better distance herself from public figures like Ross. It looks like she might do just that — she's considering scraping his nomination before it goes to a vote.

Oh wow, that guy. Those comments were absolutely horrible to read, I can't believe someone would say such things. Anyway, she definitely needs to distance herself from that guy. She doesn't want to be lumped into the same category as him whatsoever.
1That article mad me laugh. He's a keeper!LOLOL!!!
2I'm pretty sure plenty of straight white men would also be offended by Ross's comments and opinions.
3I really don't think that women who are voting for Sarah Palin would be swayed by this. It's the liberal media, right? and marriage is sacred, men are head of the household, etc. etc.
4She supports that nut? I'm even more concerned with woman who support someone who supports that nut.
5There's a lot of people who've said worse things, I'm afraid.
The fact that they still get ANY public support whatsoever after they've said such obviously racist, sexist, and sexualist [is that even a word? i think it should be...] is the thing that worries me.
6I really don't like Sarah Palin, but putting that aside: You just said that Ross denied making the comment about marital rape. Unless the women's rights groups making the accusation can back it up with proof, then they don't have a case against him on that subject. His poor track record caused by other comments shouldn't make him automatically guilty of this really terrible one.
7Marital rape wasn't a crime until fairly recently. Until then, it was assumed that if a woman was married, she couldn't NOT consent to have sex with her husband.
That said, this guy sounds like an *sshole.
Unfortunantly, he's not alone in his beliefs.
8wow...his comments are pretty shocking, hopefully she will get rid of him
9Well for the purposes of PR I agree that Gov. Palin needs to drop him like a hot potato. As for his alleged comments well all we can do is wonder there's no proof.
Not that it is the case with Ross but I have seen many times where people were labelled defenders of this or that in a negative light simply because they were doing their jobs as public defenders or defense attorneys. If I'm defending someone on a professional level it doesn't mean that I am in agreement of their thoughts and actions. It's just my job.
10What a creep! I cant believe Sarah Palin even considered this guy? And the comments he makes against woman, and marital rape. That just disgusts me!
11Oh my God, that guy makes me so mad!
12I'm not surprised she considered him--she probably didn't think there was a problem with his view until she caught some backlash.
Cannot. stand. her.
13Like Hypnoticmix, I'm surprised that Gov. Palin hasn't ditched this guy — even if it were only for political reasons. I have a feeling it won't be long, though, until she does.
14I agree, she is gonna dump him soon. He is too much even for her. (I think)
15I'm glad to see Sugar taking a stand on women's issues!! Despite her own gender, Palin is no help to real feminism.
16wow is this stud married? lol i hope not. i wonder if his wife agrees on this?
17I'm not surprised that she's choosing him, it's seems in line with her and the rest of her thinking. It's apropos.
18"The accusations leveled against Ross include:"
Have we not learned anything from the Duke La Crosse team scandal? Accusations are not proof of guilt. I can see sticking with this guy until someone comes to her with a tape recording of these statements. Until then, it's heresay, and you who choose to condem him, and Palin are hippocrits.
19lacrosse, hearsay, just an fyi.
Still, UnDave, a lot of people hear accusations and think it's the truth, and - regardless of the statements' veracity - it sounds like it would be a bad political move on her part.
20here's an FYI
Wayne Anthony Ross' attorney general nomination war ends with the legislature rejecting his nomination. The 35-23-vote marks state history's first time an agency head failed confirmation.
"I really hope folks in the body see through the smoke and hire a guy for the state of Alaska who will pursue our interests," Rep. Mike Hawker, R- Anchorage, said during debate.
Yeses, like Hawker, tried to persuade the body Ross' views had been distorted, and Ross was a man who would stand up for gun rights along with every Alaskans constitutional rights.
"Wayne Anthony Ross might be exactly the person to have at the helm of our judicial system," said Rep. Mike Kelly, R- Fairbanks.
Sen. Lynda Menard, R-Wasilla, said, "As a strong constitutionalists allow Wayne to protect all families rural and urban."
The nos, however, said Ross' main issue was Ross was not the best lawyer to be the state's top attorney.
Sen. Judiciary Chair Hollis French, D-Anchorage, said, "I love my state. I love my family. I have friends. That's not the question we have before us today."
The focus of the very intense hour-long debate started with social issues.
"His 19th century view of the gay community," French said.
Sen. Bill Wielechowski, D-Anchorage, added, "The question is will the attorney general nominee protect the rights of people he views as degenerates."
"In his own words I believe he has portrayed his attitude toward women is less then what I had hoped," House Minority Leader Beth Kerttula, D-Juneau, said.
Sen. Lyman Hoffman, D-Bethel, said, "The problem is Mr. Ross has been in this state for decades. And during those decades he has not been able to convince Native people he will look out for their interests."
"If you want to disregard that you can look at the most current example," Wielechowski said. "Because we do have one example where he's called upon to give his legal reasoning. And that's the senate appointment."
"To me Mr. President the most damaging has been Mr. Ross' handling of an issue that took place right here in the capital," French said.
French said Ross signing off on Palin sending Senate Democrats three names, for their vacant Juneau senate seat, to him, was an extremely important test.
"And I think Mr. Ross flunked it," French said
The lawmakers' attorney called Ross opinion illegal.
"It only took a couple hours to get back a very clear decision back that no that was a wrong legal call," Wielechowski said.
Right after the legislatures attorney issued her opinion Ross told reporters, "The most important thing that can be done by the Senate is not to argue what's legal and illegal but to appoint someone to represent Juneau."
"First of all the senate cannot appoint anyone" French said. "We don't have the power. The legal power to do so. The statute doesn't allow it. But more fundamental though was the somewhat out of the world suggestion that we not argue what's legal or illegal. That's a total admission that Mr. Ross had not really studied the statutes."
Ross' letter, Wednesday night, to lawmakers compounded the issue. Ross called his own statement a "false rumor."
"And now today his inability to admit to the same," French said. "We've all said things we shouldn't say. I've done it myself. I'll correct the record, or I'll apologize. That's the right thing to do."
Rep. Les Gara, D-Anchorage, ended debate saying, "When you're looking for the states top lawyer who is there to represent all Alaskans, all Alaskans regardless, I don't think this is the right nominee."
Palin called the rejection purely political, "I think it's going to be quite a challenge, from henceforth, if these politics of personal destruction plays continue to find candidates who are willing to put themselves through what Wayne just went through. So many lies told about him."
It would have taken 31 votes to approve Ross. Nine of the 35 no votes were Republicans, including Senate President Gary Stevens, R-Kodiak, House Speaker Mike Chenault, R-Nikiski, and House Majority Leader Kyle Johansen, R-Ketchikan. House Judiciary Chair Jay Ramras voted for Ross.
Only 19 senators voted because of the vacant Juneau Senate seat at the center of this controversy. Thursday, one of those three candidates, Joe Nelson, removed his name from consideration saying it is obvious no matter how qualified he or any of the other candidates are Nelson feels Senate Democrats will only support a candidate the Juneau Democrats support.
As this session comes to an end, for the first time in many years, the defining issue has not been the pipeline, or taxes, but the contention between lawmakers and the governor.
Vote brake down: 35 no / 23 yes
21I'm speechless...
22Its sad to think that there are still people who believe these things in mainstream American media. And its scary to think that so many people still support those beliefs.
23guilty until proven innocent.
24guilty until proven innocent.
Correct. In a criminal court. If he was being tried, say, civilly, it would be preponderance of the evidence (more likely than not).
And he isn't on trial.
Regardless of if he made this statements, it would be, IMO, a stupid political move for Palin.
25I can spot the uber-conservatives.
But seriously this guy sounds like a piece of sh*t dickwad. I haven't been following this story but if all of these statements are untrue wouldn't he come and say they're untrue.
26this woman is a f*cking moron!
