Due to the Chinese government’s one-child-only policy and a cultural preference for male children, China now has 32 million more males than females under the age of 20. Most prochoicers believe that every woman has a right to terminate any pregnancy, but when abortion can be used to select a male child at the expense of a female fetus, things get complicated.
Researchers have argued that if sex-selective abortions are banned, it could help close China's gender gap. But how can this be done without deciphering the intent of a woman wanting an abortion and violating the privacy many reproductive rights advocates hold sacred?
Since China seems reluctant to abandon its one-child policy, do you think banning sex-selective abortions sounds like the next best option for solving the gender gap, or does it violate a woman's right to choose?

how far along are these women that they already know the sex? and does that mean they've let it gestate in the chance that it'd be a boy? in that case there's nothing you CAN do really. in my opinion without being unlawful, but if you merely refuse to TELL PEOPLE they're children's gender? that'd work. for a small percentage of abortions at least.. i think so?

2I think they should ban sex selective abortions. I am pro choice, but I think its stepping over the line when you choose the sex of your child. The next thing could be that you choose to abort if their DNA is tested and they don't have the correct combination of genes to produce the most intelligent and beautiful child.

3Janneth, they are already having that problem with the children born under the 1 child policy. For ever 3 boys there's only 1 girl for them choose from, that's why China is now allowing people born from that policy to have 2 children.
The policy was great in control it population however a lot of the people, those poorer or uneducated really didn't think of the consequences of aborting or killing girls that were born, now they are living to regret it.

5Abortion is the less important issue here. The bigger problem is social security and financial welfare for the elderly - there is a perception that while boys grow up to care for their parents, girls are married into other families. So having only one child who is a girl means having no source of support in your old age. That said, this is rapidly changing, as couples in China's major cities are starting to prefer daughters (who in an urban, globalized society are actually become MORE likely to care for their parents than sons). The issue is traditional family roles in the countryside, and there are going to have to be some big changes in areas that have nothing to do with abortion policy before the preference for sons in those areas diminishes.

In any
case, the best option would be to not tell the women the sex of the baby before giving birth, and to lift the ban if the woman has a daughter first, I would think.

Not exactly recognized as an international human right, now is that? China has some pretty severe population pressures, and the one-child policy has arguably prevented the country from having repeat of the famines of years past. What's more, there's actually quite broad support for the policy on the ground, because there's a recognition that population growth has to be kept in check for the sake of the country as a whole. Women who are pregnant in China have the right to choose abortion rather than carrying the child to term, but if they have a second child (and do not fit the wide range of exceptions to the one-child policy, such as both husband and wife being only children or living in the countryside) they will have to pay large fines to deliver and school the child. So that in itself is a choice, and yes, Chinese women have the right to make it with their spouses.
