The 1.5 million Americans with relatives in Cuba will soon be able to travel freely to Cuba and transfer money to their family members on the island. The Obama administration hopes that the ease in restrictions will help reduce Cuban dependence on the communist regime, eventually making way for political change.
Under Bush, Cuban-Americans were only allowed to travel to Cuba for two weeks every three years.
The administration will also allow US telecom companies to provide cell phone and television services to Cubans.
An official announcement will come later today. Do you think it sounds like a good plan? Should all Americans be able to travel freely to Cuba?

I was so happy reading this in the morning. Its about time.
1Yeap it's truly UnAmerican that Cuban Americans can not travel and send money home to family members. There are many other countries who's politics/policies we do not agree with but there American family members can visit them and also send money home.
2they could travel home, and send money before, just with restrictions. Those restrictions were there, because the cuban government failed to recognize its own citizens rights as human beings, plus they shot down planes with people who were trying to help those cuban citizens.
in 2007 48% of americans agreed with keeping that embargo.
3I am so glad that Cuban Americans can now go home when they want to! I have a Cuban American friend who was unable to be with her grandmother when she passed, due to the previous policy. It is about time it changed!
4Yup.
5I called my grandma today and she cried on the phone when I told her the news. I have an uncle who's dying of cancer over there and none of us here have been able to visit. Hopefully we'll plan something out soon to head over there.
Good luck Momma T.
6actually CG, to travel there before, people had to travel to places like Mexico to get to Cuba and they couldn't send money the traditional way such as Western Union, they had to go to places like C.A.M or other companies that deal with Carribbean nations and charge way to much money.
This is a good thing. The embargo did nothing for over 40 years.
7Great news, momma tikita, I really hope that your family is able to see your uncle or someone can go and be with him.
8Myst is right, I've had friends that had to "sneak" into Cuba via other countries just to get there....
9this is awesome. hope to see the progress continue!
10Yes, let everyone travel there. Connecting more with Cuba will do more to influence them than all this embargo business.
11Yay! I'm excited for that!
However, for those of you that mentioned the embargo, did you know that individual state governments can trade with Cuba on a cash-only basis? Little known fact that I stumbled across on a government website.
12I wonder which states do that.
13I've definitely done the sneak path as a child.
14Momma, good luck with everything. My thoughts are with your family.
I'll add a
to the news...
15Thank God! The only thing the embargo is achieving is to put more suffering on the Cubans and their families.
16Yes they should be able to, if you claim to be a free country how can you than deny your citizens free travel?
17Thats great..im happy for ya!!
18GREAT news!
