This past weekend's Washington Post featured a quaint (yet lengthy) piece about a retired couple living the "simple life" in a quiet Texas suburb. Oh yeah, the retirees also happen to be former President and First Lady, Mr. and Mrs. George W. Bush.
The couple has settled into a nice routine at 10141 Daria Place in Preston Hollow. One recent dinner party went something like this:
The main dish was chicken potpie. George and Laura Bush left their cul-de-sac in the back of a dark sedan, exited through a Secret Service checkpoint and rode down streets bordered by lawn signs adorned with gigantic W's to welcome them home.It had been a bad week for the country. President Obama spoke on television about the burdens he had inherited in office: anti-American sentiment, two wars, a recession. But it had been a good week at 10141 Daria Place. The Bushes shared stories over dinner about their return to Texas after eight years in Washington. They had improved their sprinkler system and hung custom-made green drapes. Neighbors had brought over homemade cookies and a potted houseplant.
That's got to be one heck of an adjustment, going from national security briefings to custom drapes deliberations. But the Bush's are transitioning just fine into their golden years, which also includes fundraising gigs for his $300 million presidential library.
Would you like to sit down to some chicken potpie with the new retirees?

It would be an honor.
1Besides, I love chicken pot pie
No
2Yes.
3I would jump at the chance! I'm with Carrie Sue, it would be an honor.
4I would totally jump at the chance! I am glad he gets a chance to relax.
5I bet he would have some interesting stories to tell thats for sure!
I'm surprised they didn't grill though!
6Yes.
7Nope
8The stories might be interesting, but you'd have to wonder how much of what he tells you is true and what's 'based on faulty intelligence'.
9I'd serve pretzels
10Kinda like I do with certain commenters on here...
11and faulty intelligence would be anything that you cannot recall that relates personally to you.
12Spin it ladies...
13Yes, if someone doesn't agree with you Steph, must be spin.
14"faulty intelligence would be anything that you cannot recall that relates personally to you."
That is spin...
'Faulty intelligence' either refers to your own intellectual deficiencies or misinformation from intelligence/spy agencies.
Recall involves memory. You can forget, or not recall, something that has nothing to do with you personally.
It has nothing to do with agreeing with me.
15No
16His wife and daughters are completely welcome though. I got nothing personal against his family.
17No.
18Of course! I would love to get a chance to talk to any president.
19Of course! It would be an honor!
And I have to admit it would be awesome to have a meal with any president....even the one(s) where I have the opposing viewpoint!
20so i was wrong to say that, just as you were wrong to say that our criticism of lilsugar worshipping Michelle had to do with McCain losing?
21I wonder how many of Biden's stories are based on "faulty intelligence"?
22Probably all of them!
23I do kinda miss him though.... he is entertaining with all the gaffes.
24Yep! We would have to have bbq, though. Never was a big pot pie fan.
25No... nothing personal,
26It's just that ..
I tend to reserve my dinner party
invitataions for people
i consider intellectually stimulating.
Invitations!!!
Thats what i get for being snarky!
27Yes. I would be curious to speak to him in person, as a person.
28I would even though I totally disagreed with his policies- i would want to meet anyone who is part of the key team in the White House though.
29Yep, I don't like him as a president but I have nothing against him as a person and he'd probably be very entertaining. No one's ever said he wasn't likable.
30With the former-president? No. However I would not mind inviting his wife and daughters to a dinner party; they seem lovely.
31Like a couple of others, I think any president would be a fascinating dinner guest. How boring if we only surround ourselves with people who agree with our politics. There is so much more to life than politics.
32I don't insist people agree with my politics in order to share a meal with me, but I do want my guests to have more than a passing acquaintance with truth-telling and value life at any stage of development.
33GS, it's not about disagreeing with his politics. One of my best friends Zeifa is Muslim and from Pakistan (hehe makes you conservatives seem lewd and trendy), and I love him to pieces. We debate a lot whenever we decide to let the peace slide. It's about my lack of respect for him after his actions during his presidency. I could never sit across from someone who I thought negligently handled a war and who I believe deliberately lied to their country. The economy I can forgive, but the mishandling of lives and the covering up of information and control strategy in the media outlets I can't and I don't value him higher than the common criminal. There are plenty of Republican presidents I would love to sit down with socially, he just isn't one of them. I don't inherently think a Republican or Libertarian president is a bad president.
34Absolutely yes, plus Laura.
35Oy, no... I like to have reasonably bright people over to chat with, though his daughters seem interesting.
36It's doubtful. Maybe if I needed comic relief.
37"but I do want my guests to have more than a passing acquaintance with truth-telling and value life at any stage of development"
So I guess Biden isn't on the list either?
38Biden can come to my house any time - you can't get a better recommendation than Karl Rove's.
39Absolutely! I have so many questions for him.
40"Biden can come to my house any time - you can't get a better recommendation than Karl Rove's."
So it's only the conservatives that you don't want at your table, and not necessarily liars?
41Rove calls Biden a liar, no one with any credibility does.
42"but I do want my guests to have more than a passing acquaintance with truth-telling and value life at any stage of development"
So does that mean you have no credibility?
43
44Why no Dave, it doesn't.
45I'd take a meal with any President, George W included.
