I'm no rocket scientist, but I do know that if you start an open naming contest, fans of Stephen Colbert will quickly beam the comedian to first place. That's what happened to NASA when it decided to ask the public for suggestions on what to name a room in the space station, now called Node 3.
"Colbert" won the contest, but NASA still has the option to reject the write in winner. Tonight, a real-life scientist will go on the Colbert Report to share NASA's decision.
What does Stephen think NASA should do? He said: "Certainly I hope NASA does the right thing. Just kidding. I hope they name it after me."

Marks and Spencer

Name it after Colbert and in a century or so, kids will have to look up who this 'Colbert' was and they'll discover that you can study science and have a sense of humor.
1I really don't see why not. It's far more interesting than "The Freedom Room" or whatever they were planning.
2I'm a Scientist and I have a sense of humor!
If you put it to a vote for the public, and they want to name it after Colbert, then do it. It could've been worse. Like Poopy McNutterbutter.
3Why not?
4Exactly Sarah, I was thinking of you when I said that!
5Yes, it is amazing how much publicity he gave them and the level of response he got. And it's not like their other winner was any deeper - it won because it is the name of a spaceship on the tv show Firefly which has a cult following that propelled it to the top spot before Colbert came along.
It would show NASA has a sense of humor and has a place in pop culture. And almost everyone loves Colbert, right and left!
6Oooh Zeze, after that last line, you better duck !!!!
7Mich, the other winner (pre-Colbert) was Serenity
Oh and if they are revealing the name on his show I am pretty sure they would choose him - otherwise that is just mean!
8hehehe, why Steph, what I said is based on fact, not just opinion - I've seen at least 3 or 4 articles about how Colbert crosses political lines because he is such a "character" - meaning it's obvious it is not real so event he right can appreciate a good laugh, while Stewart makes the right throw spears at their tv sets.
...and I said ALMOST everyone...
9ALMOST everyone now wishes good luck to you friend!
10Yes! He won
11In one hundred years, people can look back and see how primitive and juvenile satire really was in our time. I think it'll be a good historical lesson.
12
13Of course that's based on the optimistic premise that they won't still dumb everything down to the lowest common denominator in the future.
14YEs. It was up for public vote - we the Colbertnation overwhelming voted for it - they should follow through with the contest and name the node Colbert.
NASA needs to think about the children! Think about the children!
15I say go for it! It won the vote!
(Although, I must say that I like Serenity better. Sigh.... the nerdy geek in me.)
16Organic have you seen the movie "Idiocracy", it's pretty scary.
Personally I think they should name it whatever they are comfortable with. If the name "Colbert" doesn't bother them and they didn't have any significant person they wanted to name it after then I say go for it, but if it does bother them then they shouldn't. It's just a fun contest and Colbert and us fans will get over it.
17Haha, yeah. I don't usually like Luke Wilson, but he was pretty good in it. That's satire I can get behind, because I feel like we're already living in it.
18Zeze, I was just kidding about what the other option was. It just seems like the point of the contest was to get recognition and interest in NASA going again, and naming it after Colbert would definitely accomplish that better than something like 'Serenity'.
19Well for me when my friends and I discuss children and whenever we start saying we shouldn't have them until this time or that we're picking career paths that will never allow us to afford them in this economy or that we won't be fit parents based on our childhoods blah, blah, blah. I think of that movie and want to shoot myself in the foot.
20He won so why not?
21Colbert really knows how to get his name out there. He is a publicity genius. I am sure they will name it after him.
22Loosen up! It's funny, why not?
23I kind of like the ring of "Poopy McNutterButter" myself.
Eh, give it to Colbert. I'm already a fan, so I'm biased, but he won it fair and square.
Also, I really don't see how his show is dumbed down. If my sister's ex, who is an engineer with a master's degree and is employed by one of America's biggest military contractors still doesn't get half of Colbert's jokes, he has to be doing something right. But again, I'm a fan, I'm biased, blah blah blah.
24You're the best Steph!
It does, doesn't it em? "Captain, I'll be in the Poopy McNutterbutter node if you need my assistance".
25lol, if it won the vote, they have to follow through!
26And I prefer Poopy McNutterbutter
279 out of 10 dentists prefer Poopy McNutterbutter too.
284 out of 5 podiatrists prefer Poopy McNutterbutter as well.
29Hey it was Queen Nour talking about zero nuclear weapons, a feat almost as impossible as her ability to make more than 2 facial expressions with all that botox!
There was NO ASTRONAUT!
30If he won a public vote, I guess they have to.
31I like The Colbert Report, but I'm sure someone else's name is more deserving.
