While President Obama broke new ground by hosting a White House Passover seder dinner for staffers and family, Catholics in the Philippines were carrying on a long standing Holy Week tradition.
For Good Friday, dozens of devotees were nailed to crosses, and many more had their backs whipped to atone for their sins. The Catholic Church officially frowns on the ritual, but that doesn't stop the worshipers, who go as far as driving nails into their hands.
Tourists from all over the world travel to the ceremonies, and business-savvy locals sell souvenirs and bottled water to spectators. Hopefully, they have some pain medicine to sell to those being crucified.

Very disturbing (sorry that's an understatement)

11Now those are real Christians!
12It seems barbaric, but part of me understands it. Its a ritual to them and its more so important because of its religious meaning. Just like people have extreme body piercings, or whole body tattoos, or even how some sports are very bloody, its about a persons passion for thier art, or religion, or sport. Doesnt mean I am going to nail myself to a cross sunday, in fact I will probably just eat alot of ham and deviled eggs, but i understand this type of thing.
13Oh no, I guess this is telling people to go hang others on crosses

15"Doesnt mean I am going to nail myself to a cross sunday, "
Ummm, you need to nail yourself today, and die today. Then you can get up on Sunday.
16deviled eggs ....
17Ha Ha Undave.
18Hot Damn! Now that's what I call putting your money where your mouth is baby.
I thought the hope of Christianity is to live as Christ not die as Christ.
Look I love me some Jesus but I'll be damned if I'm driving nails into my palms honey. Jesus himself would have to come down him self and ask me to do some $#!+ like that.
19Hypno, I think these people want to go through what he did , except for the dying part, to feel that pain , the sacrifice that he gave for us. I know that when i used to read the bible and get to that part I would say "how on earth did he endure" and well, these people took that a step further apparently.
20"Oh no, I guess this is telling people to go hang others on crosses"
Ummm, ok?
21As long as folks practice their own religion, and do it voluntarily, and do not force anyone else to join them; let them alone
22i'm a proud filipina, but that is just one of the many crazy things that happen in the philippines IMO. but even though i think it's crazy, i agree with grandpa. if they want to do that, then they should have that right if they're not harming anyone.
23I never saw a problem with these rituals, I was actually there for the procession one year when I was younger. Some just carried the cross, some did whip their own backs, and some did nail their hands (some also just tied their hands to the cross). It was all voluntary and deeply religious, those people feel they had something to atone for and I'm moved for them.
