It may be wedding season at Sugar, but elsewhere circumstance and desperation still send women down the aisle . . . or to the docks. In like, say, Somalia!
In an interview today on CNN's American Morning, TJ Holmes found that Somali women are flocking to the port town of Bosaso in hopes of marrying a pirate. Arghh. I'm going to assume these pirates are more like the men pictured above and less Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean. So what's the appeal? Well, money — pirates have it.
In fact, women want to marry pirates for the same reasons men become them: they want to escape the hopelessness, poverty, lawlessness, and civil war that pervade the streets of Somalia. Can you blame them?

I know I can't.

No, I can't. But that still doesn't make it the right thing to do.
Maybe the desperateness of this situation will start calling attention to Somalia, so aid or something constructive can be done. Or maybe it will take pirates killing soldiers and crewmen to take control of a ship for governments to notice.
5It was killing soldiers (Black Hawk Down, and Clinton's "bug out", that perpetuated this tragedy.
6The U.N. once again proves to be a farce in alleviating suffering in Africa.
7This just goes to show that we must try to solve the problems within Somalia if there is to be any hope of stopping the problems spilling out of the region.
Patrolling frigates can only intercept so much given the large area to cover. If you want to end piracy, get to the pirates before they leave the docks.
8i can't blame them. it's tough when you're living in that type of poverty because survival is the priority. just another reminder of how lucky i am to live in a country with more opportunity and choice.
9this is not really news since it happens all over north america, even though much fewer people are in dire poverty here. gangsterism is an attractive lifestyle for some women, even those who are not poor. Lets just say there are foolish women everywhere, and but less evidence that those women in Somalia are foolish as some of them are truly desperate to survive.
