With unemployment on the rise, President Obama is not shying away from America's immigration problem.
Obama will soon get started on a plan that will likely include a pathway to citizenship for the 12 million illegal immigrants living within America's borders. George W. Bush tried to do the same thing, but his comprehensive reform went down in Republican opposition. Obama faces an even tougher climate, since Americans are more concerned with losing their jobs to immigrants thanks to the recession.
Obama will frame his agenda as "policy reform that controls immigration and makes it an orderly system." Let's see if he can keep the debate process orderly.
Obama will start his policy push in May, and gather bipartisan groups to discuss legislation. The hope is to introduce a bill in Congress this Fall.
Do you think people are ready for reform?

I would need to find out more about what he proposes to comment intelligently on his plan, but I can say (from personal experience!) that the current immigration system needs a MAJOR overhaul!
1We've been more than ready for reform to our immigration process. We aren't ready to grant 12 million illegal immigrants legal status. There is no reason to give citizenship to someone who's first act was to break our country's laws.
2Oh this ought to be interesting
3I think people are definitely ready for reform. It's the shape in which that reform should take that causes the problems.
4I don't know if I could take another sound clip of Pelosi's dumb ass saying that illegal immigrants are more patriotic than the US citizens, however you slice it, breaking a countries law is NOT patriotic to that specific country.
5Reform should come now and should come for several scenarios for people who are in different situations.
6What happens to the small children that were brought here by their parents and who had no idea what going on? I know I don't believe I should pay for my what my parents did.
Agreed, UnDave
7"I know I don't believe I should pay for my what my parents did."
Then why do we ask for Europeans to pay for damages to the Indian? Why are African Americans seeking damages for the enslavement of their ancestors? I agree that we shouldn't have to pay for the sins of our fathers, but most people would disagree with that notion.
8It's not illegal immigration because there isn't actually a system, if you review immigration law history and current system. So of course it seems like some "law" is being broken but what you're talking about (Hainan57 and UnDave35).
9is being broken but no law has been broken.
10"Masochist" lol. It's true.
11Shelly, I am not sure I understand what you are saying....there are, indeed, Immigration Laws. Title 8 of the USC deals entirely with Immigration. (http://www.fourmilab.ch/uscode/8usc/www/t8.html)
12Shelley ?!?
13As a legal immigrant, I think this is kind of a slap on my face.
14This is really confusing to me - with Obama pushing for not employing international workers who have legally entered the country, paid all the taxes and social security (that they're never going to avail of) but wanting to legalize illegal immigrants.
I am not sure what to make of this. Sad.
I agree that wanting to legalize all the illegal immigrants is a slap in the face to the ones who have came here the correct way, legally.
15I will be very disappointed if he just lets those who came to this country illegally stay. There is a process to becoming an american citizen, and those who put in the time and work to do so correctly deserve to have citizenship. Those who come into the country illegally need to be sent back home to mabey try again.
16I too think it's a slap in the face to those immigrants who have come to our country legally. The unfortunate scheme that accompanies this administration seems to be to reward those who are undeserving and to punish those who have followed rules and acted responsibly.
