When Kasia and Nina were two weeks old they came down with pneumonia. Their parents took the identical twins to a Warsaw hospital. While being treated, staff accidently mixed up Nina with another baby girl Edyta.
Edyta and Kasia were returned to the original parents, and doctors told them that the girls were not identical twins as first suspected. They also mentioned that Nina's slight foot deformity had miraculously gone away. (Don't trust miracles?)
Fast-forward 17 years, and the real Nina and Kasia had a chance meeting in Warsaw, after a mutual friend recognized their similar appearances. The two realize they must be twins, and a DNA test confirmed it.
The discovery took a heavy toll on the families, and a Polish court has just awarded the families over $500,000 in damages. The medical authorities were also forced to admit their error. Do you think the families deserved a monetary award?

1Um....yes?? That's a pretty awful medical error.
2yes they definitely did deserve some compensation (surprised it was so low actually)...this is a crazy story....you hear of babies being swapped but because this was a set of TWINS you'd think the differences would have made the error that much more obvious....you would have something to compare the child to....

11Yes OMG yes! Not to mention that they've been raised by the wrong families but their whole life's accomplishments have been under the wrong name. If they want to get their real identities back they're going to have to go through a lot of paperwork.
12Being a separated at birth twin myself, yes they deserve compensation! The years and turmoil an identical twin can feel when that "part" of them is missing can become unbearable. It can cause all kind of psychological and emotional issues.
13How horrible. I most definitely think they deserved compensation. The psychological trauma from this is off the charts.
14Absolutely. That must have been an ordeal. I can only imagine the amount of stress and doubt that both families went through.
15Monetary, no because I don't think the blood makes a family... I think they are lucky that they now get to have another sister, daughter friend in their lives. I think the the hospital should be penalized and that their regulatory board in Poland should keep a tight reign on that hospital. Also force the hospital to go through old records and make sure that similar mistakes were not made.
16This is crazy! It sounds like a soap opera drama or something. They definitely deserve compensation - what a mess!
