30, In Love - And I Want To Get Married

Dear Sugar,
I'm a 30 years old with a great job, family, and education. I don't believe in "soul mates," and I have never, ever been the type of girl to dream about weddings or marriage. But - to my great surprise - ever since meeting the world's most wonderful man 7 months ago, I've been desperate to get engaged! We hit it off on the first date, and he moved in with me two weeks later - we simply couldn't bear to be apart. We've been living together happily ever since. My parents love him, and his folks love me; our families have met; we have countless mutual friends; we've been looking into buying a house together; and he loves talking about planning for our future together. But we still haven't ever talked about getting married. He's kind of an old-fashioned guy, so I don't want to bring up marriage before he does, and I'm trying not to drop hints or be pushy! So am I crazy to be this impatient? I'm not in a rush to have kids or anything, but I'm so excited about our life together that I really want to make it "official." Please tell me what to do! Dreaming Dolores

Dear Dreaming Dolores
Call me old fashioned, but I think you've got to wait out your year mark before you bring up marriage. You seem elated, and I am really happy that you guys have found each other, but marriage is forever (or at least is supposed to be). So take the next 5 months to enjoy your bliss together, and just see your man for who he really is. I firmly believe that you experience most things together over the course of 12 months. Being there side by side through good times, bad times, stress, promotions, etc... is something to assess. You'll want to be 100% sure that you are right for one another. After a year's time, if you still feel this way about him, you can say something like, "Sugar Lips, we've been together for a year and constantly talk about our future together, but we've never discussed actually getting married. I feel our lifestyle warrants a conversation about it. It's something that I really want and hope that you do to." I'm sure he can respect that, after all, you live together. See what he says. I hope it works out for you!
