You DO need permission though, to pet someone's dog. I hate when random people just run up and pet your dog, so rude! They have no idea if that might scare your dog, or if your dog is in training and shouldn't be petted at the moment...all kinds of things could be going on...they just don't know. Same thing with people letting their little dog run up and get all over your dog. Grrrr, some people need manners.

THANK YOU simplyfab! its such a taboo not to like dogs that i oftentimes have to pretend im not petrified when the dog in the elevator is all over me. i dont know why its ok for people to allow their dogs to be all over other people?

i only like some dogs, mostly small, and like very few bigger dogs and i hate hairy dogs and smelly dogs and slobbery dogs and yappy dogs and dogs with that gross brown crap all over their facial hairs and dogs with goop in their eyes....

Generally, I don't pet other people's dogs either. I think it's somewhat rude (to the animal and owner). However, I often coo at the dog, and say,"Hi, puppy. Good boy." The dog and owner seem fine with that.

As long as they look friendly and clean, and the owner is okay with it, I pet them. I love dogs!

I love all dogs and usually end up saying hello to the dog first. I keep my hands to myself until I have permission to pet. Dogs are better than most people. Love them!

LoL bethinabox, I wouldn't pet Cujo either! It'd get permission first though, wouldn't want to lose a hand.

I have allergies to anything with fur or feathers, so not only do I hate it when peoples dogs jump on me because of my allergies, but it bothers me when the owners don't care that their dog is all over someone, especially if it is in a public place where they should be keeping an eye on their pet. Just because they think their dog is cute doesn't mean everyone else agrees. But I will admit that every now and then a dog comes along that is too cute to ignore and I'll pet them despite my allergies!

Actually, yes you do - just in case. I am a dog lover but not every dog is friendly. Same with cats.

Dog owners that don't teach their dog manners.....not so much.

I don't like touching dogs, and I especially don't like not knowing how they've been trained (i.e., what their mannerisms are, etc.). My ex-boyfriend had three huge dogs that jumped on me every time I walked into the room! It was so scary!

I'm very, very afraid of dogs. I never pet them. I hate when people are like "Its okay he's friendly!!!" while their dog jumps and scratches and "playfully nips" aka bites. Control your animals people. I don't care if you think your dog is just playing.

if you just randomly pet a dog without asking the owner, you deserve to be bitten. that's just dumb.

I'll pet cats but dogs I am a little more wary of. =) I volunteer at an animal shelter though so I'll usually pet a doggie.
