I don't know about you, but I love hearing other people's engagement stories. Since the man is usually the one that proposes, he's got to feel a tremendous amount of pressure to make the moment perfect, but I must say, sometimes it's the simplest engagement stories that become my favorite! I know you've all heard a few good ones over the years so do tell, what's your favorite engagement story?

Oli
engagement ring in a Kinder Surprise!
1LOL hate to do it, but My story is my favorite, not because its mine but because its awesome, My husband and i MET onlline playing counter strike. 2 years later he organized a huge land party with all our family and friends and asked me in game made it pop up on the screen. Klax: Latina, Will you Marry me? it was soo awesome i cried and said. "are you sure???" lol
2lol mine here goes...
3our first date was a picnic on top of a hill and we spent most of time laughing and looking at the clouds... i was in love!
so two years later he took me ack up to that specail place and when we were eating a heard a sound almost like lawn mower... it was a plane writing in the sky.. it said "will you marry me" i looked at my sandwich and there was the ring!!!
lol mine here goes...

I like simple proposals. The one with Aidan and Carrie in the street on Sex and the City was one that I would prefer when the time comes. Simple, spontaneous, and not alot of hoopla.
5Fleur, that's mine too! In fact, I added that to the post earlier this week about favorite movie/tv show proposals
I love how they were just out walking the dog, and there it was!
6I have 2 very good engagement stories...1) my best friend got engaged through a beautiful cake her friend made for her fiance...they are camp counselors, so the cake was the 2 of them at a playground, with her on a swing set and him down on one knee...all of our friends were hidden in the attic of our friends house while he proposed...2) my other best friend got engaged on the brooklyn bridge, on the overlook, on a cold march night, and she was completely shocked because she hadn't been expecting anything...and they were completely alone because it was cold and windy and no tourists were walking on the bridge that night.
7I really like the simple, unexpected, seemingly spur of the moment (but obviously considered) proposals, too. The one I thought of was Jim and Pam from the Office, haha. Creative proposals are cute too, and they don't have to be elaborate either, just thoughtful.
8Mine.
9My brother and sister-in-laws.
10They were a long distance couple for about a year and a half. Last winter, my brother flew down to visit her, but ended up sick in bed with a really terrible flu the entire time he was there. One day while she was there with him he said "If I pull through this can you promise you'll marry me?"
She said yes..obviously..
My sister's was cute...on a sleigh ride this past New Year's while they were crossing over a bridge in the snow.
11Mine is my favorite of course!
We were on the beach on a rainy day and there was
nobody else there. We looked around in the tidepools for awhile, and then we went and sat on a log to look out at the seals on the rocks and in the water. We were just talking and then he
pulled the ring out. I was very surprised!
aklatina, that's so funny that you said "are you sure?" cause I was just talking to a few friends recently about their initial reactions when proposed to. That would be a good discussion topic for Dear - what were the first words out of your mouth when he proposed to you? Mine were "Are you serious?" LOL! When I realized he was, of course I said YES!
12I'm gonna have to say my engagement story is my favorite. Okay so here it goes...it's a little long, but worth the read. =O)
The day of the proposal...2/22/08
So I am a 7th grade science teacher in Los Angeles and I was reading to my students while they were working on a science poster and my principal and my mentor (who is like a second mother to me) come in through the back door (I have 3 doors - 2 in the front & 1 in the back) and I was surprised because the principal doesn't come to my room that often. She tells me that they are going to do a backpack search because there may be a weapon in my classroom...I was like oh heck no!...and I look at my mentor and she nods her head like just go.
So I go with her and she tells me that she pulled me out because it is very hard to see one of your students getting arrested...blahblahblah. So we were outside for like 7 minutes and then the assistant principal (who was my 7th grade teacher and high school counselor) comes outside all upset telling me that they need me to come inside because the students aren't cooperating...now my students know that I don't play when it comes to respecting adults and to hear that they weren't cooperating I was getting ready to GO OFF on them.
So I go into my classroom and it's all quiet and I see Mr. Green (he works in the title 1 office and is the bomb!!!) with a camera...i'm like "hey greenie green" but confused because why is he here with the camera? is he here to take pictures of the weapon?...i was like whatever let me set my students straight because they WERE NOT going to embarrass me!!! Mrs. Miller says "bring him in!!!"...and here comes Rickey!!! & all my students say "SURPRISE!!!" and they are all holding 1 rose.
So already I am super surprised!!! then Rickey comes over to me and gives me 1 rose...i'm just cheesing away!!! So all of a sudden he says how he loves me and how he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me and THEN gets down on one knee...the look in his eyes said that he loves me soooo much...and asks me to be his wife!!! I say "YES!!" and give him the biggest hug ever!!!
So all of my students give me their rose and a hug then say "Congrats Ms. H." I felt sooo special!!! I couldn't breathe!!!
Rickey is in the front of the room with plastic champagne glasses and sparkling cider and preparing for a toast. I was soooo happy!!! I couldn't stay still and I had the biggest smile on my face!!!
He says his toast, everyone was happy...my principal, assistant principal, and mentor were crying...and that's my proposal.
13I have to say..so far mine as well. 2003, we were in London visiting my best friend who lived there at the time. We went to the Tower Of London for the day and had a great time sight-seeing. Dusk was approaching and all of a sudden he said "Lets get to the Bridge!" Meaning Tower Bridge nearby. Being London in January, it started to rain as the sun was going down and we reached one of the round observation areas of the bridge overlooking the Thames just as it was getting pretty dark. He proposed in the rain with us tucked under an umbrella. When he presented the ring I was really surprised that he had had it on him and I never suspected. So I blurted out in answer, "Where were you hiding that!?". Then we started laughing and I said "Yes, yes yes!". Friends have given us pictures and models of the Tower Bridge ever since. I cherish them all.
14These are so sweet! I'm not engaged, but the cutest one ever was when my friend proposed to his girlfriend.
He helped us all make signs the day before and then he was going to meet her on the Quad at lunch, like every day, and my friends and I were just hanging out on a bench on the side. They went to go into the mailroom so that we would have time to set up our boom box... when we saw them come out we started blasting their song on the quad, so she looked over and we were all carrying signs that said "Will you marry me?" and then she turned to look back at him and he was down on one knee with the ring in his hand and she started to cry and everybody in the Quad started cheering (it was lunch time so it was really packed!) and it was the sweetest thing ever.
I know it's a little cheesy, but I saw it so it was my favorite. My boyfriend's not super creative so we'll have to see if he can top any of these!
also, I love chicoocoos!!! it's like a movie!
15Oh, PS, how do you put an engagement ring in a Kinder Surprise??? That would be my favorite thing EVER.
16I like good stories. Mine is lame. My guy was so nervous that I did not know what was going on with him and wanted to get away from him as the night went on but that is hard to do when you are camping. When he did finally propose I was so overwhelmed that I took one of the few chances a girl has to be cool in her life to repeatedly mutter gibberish for a while before I said yes. lame + lame = my engagement story
17i hope mine would be as much fun!!
18Perfectly timed proposals are my favorite. The elaborate proposals make me nervous... like what if the girl is in a bad mood or drank too much for dinner? I also like the quiet proposals... alone outside.
19I think my sister-in-law and brother-in-law had a really good engagement story. They were both TV producers for a local station and my brother-in-law made a "commercial" showing all their favorite places in town to hang out and where they had been on dates. Then at the end, he had a sign saying "Will you marry me, Liz?" and they aired the commercial when she was at work so she'd see it. She was SO surprised that she almost passed out. It was so romantic!
20Mine is my favorite ofcourse!
My boyfriend proposed to me in front of Cinderella's castle at Disney World. The reason he did that was because it completely summarized our relationship. Years ago he surprised me for my 18th birthday and took me to Disney on a 2 week trip. He said he had never seen me so constantly happy and giddy and could not imagine a better place to ask me. So when we went back last year, the biggest shock to me ever, on our first night before dinner, he walked me to the castle, started talking, and got on his knee crying. I of course said yes.
We were treated like royalty by Disney for the rest of the 10 days.
21Well, ours is sort of whacky. We became a couple (THAT story is the absolute best) and actually started talking about marriage about two days later. It was sort of an understood thing that we would be together forever. However, I was only 16. My mom was all for us getting married (suffice to say, if she could have handpicked my husband, she would have chosen him, and in a way sort of did, but anyways)....the thing was, I was still very insecure, emotionally wracked, etc.
So, it was me who put the breaks on and figured we'd wait. Not to mention, I was raised to believe you should live with someone for a few years before marrying them, not to mention I'm not a huge fan of legal marriage.
But anyways....after five and a half years of being together, and going "Hrm, maybe we should get married" and "hrmm maybe not" and a bunch of other crazy crap going on since we're polyamorous......it sort of dawned on me that my insecurities have long since been gone, I love him more than anything, he is without a doubt my soulmate, and I want to shout it from the rooftops. I know that we're meant to be together, and will be together, until the day we die, and if there's life beyond that, then whatever comes, I know we'll be together. I've known since the day I met him, but like I said, that's another story. So, I decided to pop the question. I bought him a simple silver engagement ring (we both hate gold), and then I took my parents and my fiance' out to dinner for Valentine's Day.
About halfway through dinner I was like "Hrmm, um, okay so I have your last present, close your eyes".
My mom knew what was going on but my step-dad and fiance' didn't. I let him open his eyes after the ring was in my hand, and I basically stumbled through something along the lines of "Well, I sort of um, you know, love you and want to be with you forever, and I'm pretty sure you feel the same, and um, I love you...and ah....so....I want to tell the world, so um, will you marry me?"
He of course, said yes, and he made ME put the ring on his finger, the way a guy traditionally does with a girl
I think the part I love best about our story is the fact that we're so untraditional but we love each other just like that and compliment each other perfectly.
22Well my favorite proposal so far happened to a friend of mine on New Years Eve. *I'm hoping my boyfriend tops this!* lol Anyway - a bunch of us were staying at a local hotel that offers an awesome NYE package - so while she was on a restroom break after dinner - before the DJ started the fun - we were let in on a secret that she had a card taped to the bottom of her chair because her bf was going to propose! He and the DJ were making it look like a contest - and involved the whole room!! The DJ was up talking and then says we were going to play a game -- and we all needed to look under our chairs for a ticket - and if we had that we need to come up here on stage. Well my friend went absolutely crazy when she seen she had 'won' - she went up on stage to talk to the DJ while her BF snuck out behind him and kneeled down - the DJ moved out of the way so she could see him - on bended knee - one single red rose and ring in hand - asking for her hand in marriage........and of course she said YES!!! How do you say NO to that!? -- (Sadly to say they're in the middle of a divorce now...not sure what went wrong - but that sure was an awesome beginning!!)
23Well mine is (of course) we met when i was a freshman in high school,he was in 7th grade..we rode the same bus for 3 months and i always sat in the back,he sat 3 rows up...we were both extremely shy but i always noticed him,one day agroup of senior boys were teasing me enough that i was on the verge of tears and here is this adorable 7th grader that stands up,and tells them all to just shut up and leave me alone, then he makes his best friend change seats with me...anyways back to the engagement story, after life took us seperate ways,(i was miserably married with three children,he had moved out of state.)..i left my cheating ex and was going to the store to get milk and i just happened to run into guess who,not as shy as b4,we talked for the next 6 months everyday, only prob was he had a girlfriend and i too was seeing someone.well to make a long story short(lol) he ended up having a son w/his girlfriend,i broke up w/my boyfriend and decided if i had to wait for this man forever i would just be his friend and be single.i didn't know how bad this woman treated him until one night 3 years ago i saw him @ the store and he said he really needeed to speak to me and asked if my number was the same,i told him yes and went on my way.i went out with afew friends that night and got home @ around 11
24;30pm...im unlocking the door and my mom(whom i was staying with @ the time)opens the door with the phone in her hand and says this guy has called 12 times and really needs to talk to you.it was my now husband james, the rest is history...we moved into our own apartment and hes been great to me and my kids, oh i was telling ya'll how he proposed..it was our 2 year (going out/living together )anniversary,he comes home from work with an xbox 360 and tells me thats my gift...i was a little dissapointed since i'm not a real big game player but its the thought right? anyways my best friend comes over and he's hooking up the xbox and runs upstairs for a minute i'm sitting and talking and he comes back down stairs with a tiny box and says "oh,i also got you this"...it was my engagement/promise ring that i'd had my eye on @ the jewelry store and while i'm showing it off he says to my friend "you going to be at the wedding?" i'm in total shock by now and then he says"that's if she'll marry me that is?" i know it's not as romantic as some, but if you know him then you'd understand it was all about the joke/xbox and the element of surprise..did i mention b4 he bought the ring he asked all 3 of my kids if he could marry their mom and make her happy for the rest of her life, and like me they all 3 said yes...
btw i didn't find out til many years later that when he got off the bus that day,he got jumped by all those big senior guys and had to miss 3 days of school because they whooped his little butt so bad but he told me that when it came to me and defending my honor was well worth a few bruises/cuts,and if he had to do it all over again, the only thing he would change is that he wouldn't have been so shy and would have never let me get away from him for so long...my reply was "well, now we have the rest of our lives to make up for all those years we were apart". just wanted to add that so that women will know "anything worth having is worth waiting for,and that if its meant to be then nothing can stop true love from finding away".
25I knew a girl that dated a guy for a long time. He was a good guy and seemed to have his sh*t together, he was an average dude. One day he told her they were going for a drive. He took her to a beautiful location outside the city and proposed. When she said yes, he told her that the property was his, and would be hers too. Turns out he was wealthy and he wanted to find someone who would love him for him, not his money so he waited to tell her.
26They lived happily ever after.
After an entire day of working, I came home to an empty house. My boyfriend and his best friend had left to go swimming and I had the house to myself to just unwind. About five hours later they came home and Stephen told me, "Come get me at 11:24 p.m. because I have a surprise for you!" He's always so random like that and I was unamused because I was so tired, but of course, I humored him and he was all smiles ready to go. We got into the car, stopped at the gas station, and were on our way to wherever we were going. As we're driving there, we get stopped at a sobriety checkpoint which we thought was just awesome because we'd never had to do that before. Now, Stephen is totally predictable most of the time, so it didn't take long for me to realize where we were going. Sure enough, we ended up at this gorgeous hotel that we've stayed at a few times. Everytime we go though, their giant fountain has been turned off (once for cleaning & the other time because it was Winter) and he always said one day we'd come back and see it all lit up! Well, being summertime and all, he was SURE it'd be on this time, but low and behold they had JUST turned it off. Ha! He was disappointed to say the least, but we made the best of it and sat beside it just talking about our days. Before we left he asked if I wanted to take a walk around the fountain and just pretend it was on. I went along and we held hands walking around it, but soon it just turned creepy with the black water beside us, the water trickling from above, and the MASSIVE stone statues that towered over us. Haha, so I picked up pace and ran around the fountain back to the car. He laughed at me and as I was opening the door to get into the car he said, "Hey, I learned some new Italian!" He'd been wanting to learn a new language and had been picking up new words here and there. I said, "Oh yeah? What?" "Lo sposerete?" and I waited for him to tell me what that meant, but he was silent, so I said, "Uh, what does that mean? How's your family??" "No! It means, will you marry me?" and I must have had the most puzzled look on my face because I asked, "What did you say??" and he repeated himself and all I remember from then on is that he got on his knee and I kept saying "Are you serious?!?" and finally he said "YES! I AM SERIOUS!!!" and I knelt down to where he was, hugged him, and said, "Of course I will!!" Then he ran down into the woods behind us, picked me a wild flower, and we sat on the curb for a good while laughing and talking. Oh, and the sweetest thing... when we stopped at the gas station earlier he got some NyQuil to take before we left because he knew we'd have a hard time sleeping after such a big night.
It was
definitely imperfectly perfect... from us being in our pajamas, to the sobriety checkpoint, and ending with a fountain that should have been magical instead of creepy.
It was the summary of us in one totally awesome night.
27I don't know a single one worth telling. lol... I don't know anyone including myself that have grand schemes like this.
28Some people have some really amazing stories. I'm always interested in how the question got popped.
29My best friends! It's so adorable!
Her boyfriend (for about 4 years) had suddenly gotten the cold and had to stay home from work while my best friend went to work. They share the same career (veterinarian) and work together in the same pet hospital. So while she was gone to work, (although he was sick) he spent the WHOLE day getting ready! He was coughing, but getting through it. I was there to help plan and get everything ready. We did a surprise party and decorated the house, bought her favourite flowers, and he had previously bought the ring. We invited a bunch of friends overs, they hid when he called to check when she was coming, and as she came through the door we all screamed "SURPRISE!". Confused, her boyfriend asked her if it was their anniversary. My best friend was shocked that he "remembered the wrong day". Laughing he pulled out the ring and asked her "Will you marry me?" And yada yada, she happily screams says yes they kiss. And at the end he says "i didn't remember the wrong day". SO ADORABLE!!
30I love my engagement story! My boyfriend and I had been together for five years and living together for about six months. We'd decided to buy a house together and finally found the perfect one. On the day we closed on the house we both took the day off and spent it packing and waiting to get the keys. When we got the keys, we took two carloads of stuff over from our apartment to our house, just the two of us. I kept wanting to rush back and bring more stuff over and have my parents over to help us unpack and clean up, but he was very adamant about it being just the two of us. Once we'd unloaded our cars we were set to make another trip back to our apartment when he said that there were still a few things left to unpack. His uncle had previously given us some duplicates from his new house (chairs, hoses, etc.) and had some kitchen gadget for us too. The 'gadget' was in a medium sized box, and I kept asking (somewhat impatiently!) "what is this anyway?" and telling him that it was light. Once I got to the tissue paper and saw the shape of a jewellery box, it dawned on me what was happening. Except I asked "is it a silly locket with a photo of the house in it or something"! I didn't want to assume...That was when my boyfriend said, with tears in his eyes, "You know that I want to be with you forever, right?" I just balled. I could barely even get the box out of the tissue paper let alone unwrap the box and get to the ring! I also asked "Are you sure" and "Are you crazy" a couple of times. It was a really great way to get engaged!
31Engagement--- Rome-Coliseum-midnight-ring-full moon = perfect
I met my wife working on a Ship in Lebanon. My wife is from the USA and I am from Canada. We both worked onboard a ship for a non-profit organisation. After 4 years working and traveling to 41 countries and dating for 3 years we were ready to return to our homes and figure out what our future would be.
32During our final year i began planning what would be the perfect engagment (consider that I was a volenteer for the past 4 years which = very little money). She is very hard to suprise because she always see it comming. During the year leading up to our engagement i would randomly talk about how excited my parents got when my two olders sisters got engaged and how they have made me promise that i will get engaged close to home so that i can bring her home and party. She also believed that I felt it was very important to ask her father for her hand face to face. (to put it clear I worked very hard and in her mind there was no possible way i was going to ask before getting back to north america) Well i had pick out the ring and had it sitting in my drawer on the ship and we were ready to leave for ROME!!!!!
Angie was very tired and wanted a little time just the two of us before returning home so i brought up the idea of going to Rome. We were in denmark at the time and Rome was probably the only city that she really wanted to see. So to rome we went.
Now i'm a very adventurous guy and asked her if she were up to some "crime" (on the ship we did allot of pranks and called them "crime"). I told her that I thought that it would be possiable to sneek into the Coliseum in the middle of the night so that because the story we wanted to make. This was perfect I had planned it and she was following it. Good so far except for i had no idea if we could actually get in except for my desire for a perfect engagement and some looks at online pictures of the fences around this amazing structure.
The Big Night came and we went to the Coliseum. It was a beautiful night, with a full moon, nice weather, and even better very few people. Part of the beauty of january travels. We walked around a few times looking for the perfect place and getting more and more excited and nervous all at the same time.
With cobble stone walkways and the arches in the background, and the moonlight illluminating that coliseum I new it was going to happen. It was to beautiful to walk about with out have the ring on this girl. We finally figured on the best because it turned out that the fence was better built than the pictures i had seen. but i wasnt going to be stopped. We sat against the fence as if we were just enjoying a nice night. It was innocent except for the fact that i had my around her and was digging a hole with a sharp rock i had found. After the hole was big enough we looked both ways and i sliped under the fence and then pulled her after. The game was on.
We got in and were standing on the platform in the middle of the coliseum. I put my bag a little ways back and of coures we needed a picture. I told her to wait and went to my bag. I took off the jacket i was wearing and had on a nice white shirt and grabbed a little box and headed back. She was confused why i had changed (she didnt have a clue) I looked at her and said angie I dont want to go home unless i can take a fincee with me, with that i got down on one knee confessed my undying love and asked her to marry me. and guess what!!!! SHE SAID YES
