It's good to be Oprah. Well, most of the time. Dreams of infiltrating polygamist compounds come and go, but daytime's queen got to live it, going as she is with a TV crew. Thank goodness for that! Though she didn't get any FLDS secrets — unless you want that poof!
So what was she told? The FLDS is definitely not racist. Sister wives? Learn about themselves through conflict. Kids? No need for play when there's work. Teen girls? Trust their parents will choose the right husbands. Underage marriage? Um. Answers ranged from "absolutely not" to "not really, no." Oh.
But she did get straight answers on their long hair. BTW, poof height does not correspond with righteousness. "It's just a style," Oprah's told, "come back in 10 years." Will do! To see how they get the look, read more.

GUESS
Tory Burch
Maison Martin Margiela
Aqua Net.
1And lots of it.
2Do they have mirrors?
3I wonder why they dress in pastels.
4I've always wondered that too.
5I just got the heebie jeebies looking at that picture. They creep me out. The all look exactly the same, even their facial features. It's just weird.
6I wonder why people find them so interesting.
7I think the Amish are more interesting. And you don't see them in the news that often. Bonus.
8The Amish are very interesting.
9Do you see these people as being like the Amish?
10i watched this yesterday. it was so disturbingly creepy i couldn't stop watching it.
11Don't know if you are asking me but I don't know enough about them to know if they are like the Amish or not. That's why I find both religions interesting. I don't really know much about either one of them.
12i find this and amish people interesting as well...the similarities are obvious in terms of dress and hair choice, but i, like piper23, don't know enough about either to discuss more than that
13You or Star, Piper.
14I guess, since the Amish have been around so much longer, I feel they have more credibility though I can't say I find them fascinating.
No, I don't see them being like the Amish. Like piper and skigurl, I don't know enough about them. I just find the Amish interesting. I'm not sure I could live the life they do. The Mennonites as well. I'd love to learn more about the Amish and the Mennonites.
15Religion is not a subject I know enough about to have an educated discussion. That's why I stay out of most of those threads. "Interesting" is about as far as I go when it comes to religion.
16Go Amish! They make such good pies when I go to the farmer's market.
17The only similarity between the FLDS and the amish is that they adhere to a strict code. But the codes are very different from each other.
18Oprah was super obnoxious and condescending to them, in my opinion.
19I love pie.
20Pie?
21Any kind of pie.
22How does pie fit into this?
23"Go Amish! They make such good pies when I go to the farmer's market."
I love pie. Never had an Amish pie but I'm sure its stellar.
24Oh. I missed that comment. The Mennonites come to some of the farmer's markets around here. They make some amazing lemon poppyseed bread.
25Mennonites are kind of Amish but a bit more modern. Would that be a fair statement? But either way, I'm sure they make great poppy seed bread.
26If I was there I would ask them these questions:
1) when you shower does your hair get stuck in your Butt-crack? and if so, do you have to wash it again?
27(I ask the hard hitting questions I know)
2) Does "the puff" in the front of your hair ever catch wind, and if so have you ever fallen over? or did your poofy sleeves counteract that from happening?
3) Do you ever want to get naked, go grab a white horse, wrap your body with your luxurious hair and become Lady Godiva for a day?
Why in a hog's eye do I give a dang about how these ninnies style their hair?
The Amish also make great mini baked potatoes.
28Wow. I thought my aqua net hairstyle (when I was 15) was awesome. I see now it didn't compare to what these ladies have accomplished.
29I have much more respect for the Amish than the polygamists. At least the Amish have a moral code; albeit DRASTIC! I also tried to watch this on Oprah, but it was so obvious the spokeswoman was just lying about every controversial question that she was asked that it became pointless to watch; for example, saying they only consider marriage when they become 18 ~ I wonder did she forget why their great leader and prophet is currently in jail? How does one have an intelligent conversation with someone who lives in the clouds?
30haha CG. hahaha. All I can say is these ladies look miz. And that is slang for miserable.
31Jazz - I agree, I watched the whole thing and you could totally tell they were lying through their teeth.
Also Oprah was pretty condescending, per usual.
However, I disagree about the Amish having a moral code and polygamists not. Not all polygamists sexually abuse or force children into marriage, so unless the plural marriage part is the immoral part...
32They were lying lying through their teeth, the backtracking of the women really annoyed me. Anyway I felt Oprah acted like any of us would act in such a place, with the right amount of disbelief and the fact that they say black people are monsters must also have coloured her thinking too.If I was Oprah i wouldn't have bothered just because of that disgusting part of their belief
33CG: Does"the puff" in the front of you hair ever catch wind...(surely not as much as the "wind" I sucked in laughing!!!) Thank you Madame Butterfly
34Yeah I don't see the correlation to the Amish, who I also find fascinating. The only connection is that they're a small isolated religion based group in America
. I also assume the Polygamists do have a moral code. A moral code doesn't have a set definition
and can mean many things to different people. Also moral codes can be easily violated...ahem Afghanistan and Pakistan government.
35I found this very interesting, almost sweet.
36Leave it to Oprah to ask the stupid questions she asked.
37Never knew they believed Black people are monsters . . .
38Well I haven't seen the whole thing and I don't know anything about this community.
39But that video made me smile. Even though we're so different from them, we're still so similar...wanting to improve our appearances.
It put a smile on my face.
Now please don't go judging me for saying that, as I said I don't know the rest of their beliefs, but this was a sweet moment
MissyB, I read somewhere that they believe that God cursed Abel after he killed his brother and gave him darker skin. So they think that a person with dark skin is cursed.
40Sorry but it's Cain that killed Abel.

42hausfrau: I guess I felt forcing a 14-year-old to marry someone in his late 40s or 50s immoral...kind of along the lines of rape of a child's mind and body at the same time. Whether they participate or not they are part of a body of people who condone the practice. As far as I know, the Amish do not condone acts that are against the law.
43But Jazz, being polygamous is not synonymous with condoning child marriage. Otherwise, you'd have to say all Catholics lack morals for what some church officials did. Just believing in plural marriage by itself doesn't make one immoral.
44Very nice site!
