A lot of times research studies reveal conclusions that make me say duh. Did you know science proves that men remember the bodies of women clad in bikinis better than those of fully clothed women?
Today the British Psychological Society revealed that in the 10 days before their periods, women are more likely to go on a spending spree. The revelation that women make hormone-induced bad decisions has me thinking: can some "studies" double as useless and detrimental to society?
The study, which surveyed women about their spending habits, concluded that women were more likely to buy on an impulse during the later stages of their menstrual cycle, thanks to a reaction to intense emotions and hormonal changes. More than half overspent by about $50.
Do you need a study to tell you to put the credit card back in your wallet? You don't really want that new pair of shoes, you're just being hormonal! Is this study eye-opening or does it simply further a stereotype?

1Who cares?
2rotflol I love how she has on a white skirt in this picture. Butwhile this is funny is it really "news"??
3Not news. Moving on.
4I can see the Spanx lines on the model!
Why doesn't this site actually post news anymore?
5I dont' think thsoe are spanx lines I think that's just a cheap skirt :| LOL at CitizenSugar becoming FabSugar......
6Maybe lots of women get paid 10 days before their period? This doesn't prove that hormones have anything to do with it, it just suggests a link. And I'd like to know what excuse men use for their overspending?
7OMG, what will Steph say? Is there a study on how biology effects mens spending habits? My question is why isn't there a study on what makes women more likely to remember men? I do wish i had been part of that bikini study though.
8Umm... not important. Plus, I tend not to spend then - feeling too bloated to feel good about trying on clothes
9a bunch of stupid men doing a stupid study...next
10flutterpie, it was not men doing the study: "Professor Karen Pine will present her work to a British Psychological Society meeting in Brighton later this week.
She asked 443 women aged 18 to 50 about their spending habits."
11First and foremost, this isn't news. However, as someone who does science, I do want to make the point here that the way a study gets presented by the MSM isn't always accurate. I haven't read this study, so I can't say for certain, but oftentimes, a behavior is being correlated with specific hormones/neurotransmitters/pheremones etc in order to learn more about what types of behaviors those chemicals are involved in, not to figure out what influences the behaviors. For example, everyone knows that people who just had sex feel closer to those they just had sex with because of hormones. But when you realize that certain hormones in certain parts of the brain are responsible not just for this, but for all kinds of social interaction behaviors, it becomes much more important. For example, lack of that same hormone can also play a critical role in autism disorders.
Basically, my point, which I'm not making very well, is that don't knock on the science because it seems obvious to you. The work that went into it may have much larger ramifications that you may not realize bc of how it's presented.
12I'm with kscincotta on this one. It IS new and it IS interesting -- every new discovery has some merits: not everyone can cure cancer, you know!
I also don't think the point of the study was to "tell women to put their credit card back in their wallet". They were just exploring how an aspect of a woman's behavior is influenced by hormone fluctuations in her body.
13But what if a woman doesn't have money to blow on a shopping spree - does the adornment theory hold up when they check with women of a different economic status? Do women of all cultures show some kind of 'shopping spree' behavior? For this study to say anything valid, wouldn't the women have to keep careful track of their cycles and spending habits for at least a year?
14If they drew a statistically valid sample size, you should end up with a sample reflecting economic status, race, religion, etc. You would have to go to actual study to get the level of detail you are asking for. I think a more salient question was the study "peer reviewed" before publishing.
15sorry grandpa...a bunch of stupid men financed a stupid study done by a stupid woman. anyhoo, i dont care what the reasoning is behind it, you can study how hormonal fluctuations are related to female behavior without making women seem like vapid creatures who are driven by their period
16I think it would be quite a stretch to use that study, and conclude that women are vapid. If you take a few marketing courses you will see how customers can be manipulted to spend more, or pick a particular product.
17G'pa, in # 17, I think your second sentence tends to disprove your first!
18Not news, detrimental, and I can not bear to look at that photo any longer.... That is the worst I have ever seen a pencil skirt look in my entire life.
19How is that, steph. Do you think marketing tools are only used on women? Like i said take a marketing course or two, and see how it works. You will learn the 4 p's of marketing: Product, promotion, place, price
20G'pa, you're condescending with your assumptions that other people know nothing about the subjects on which you feel well-read.
The point of the comment was that right after you question use of the description 'vapid' you refer to how easily customers can be 'manipulated' - in a thread that discusses whether hormones make women more susceptible.
21Main Entry: va·pid
Pronunciation: \ˈva-pəd, ˈvā-\
Function: adjective
Etymology: Latin vapidus flat-tasting; akin to Latin vappa flat wine and perhaps to Latin vapor steam
Date: circa 1656
: lacking liveliness, tang, briskness, or force : flat , dull
If "you refer to how easily customers can be 'manipulated'" If the process was as easy as you claim I said which i would never be so foolish to aver; companies would not spend literally Millions of dollars on marketing. It would not be "A Major" in MBA programs.
22A study suggests hormones drive women to spend more at certain times of the month.
But hormone-driven spending surges shouldn't suggest to anyone that the over-spending women lack liveliness, tang or briskness.
Carefully developed and studied marketing techniques manipulate people to spend more or pick a particular product. But, the carefully developed and studied marketing techniques are a constant whenever women go shopping.
So what have we got? Nothing.
23who said that; "But hormone-driven spending surges shouldn't suggest to anyone that the over-spending women lack liveliness, tang or briskness
24"I think it would be quite a stretch to use that study, and conclude that women are vapid."
"lacking liveliness, tang, briskness, or force : flat , dull"
It's a combination of two of yours.
It doesn't matter because we've got nothing.
I think it's a flawed survey or study whether peer reviewed or not. You seem to be raising questions about marketing in relation to the situation. But this is a classic thread to nowhere.
