We have sex to feel connected to our partners and to express our love, but for most of us, the main reason we're getting it on is for the amazing rush of pleasure we feel once we reach orgasm. It's an indescribable feeling of bliss, but have you ever wondered what happens to your body physically when you climax? If so, then keep reading.
- Once a woman becomes sexually aroused, her heart begins to beat quicker, she breathes faster and she'll tighten various muscles all over her body. Her breasts will enlarge slightly and her nipples will become erect. Some women's faces, necks, or chests will become flushed (a sex flush) and her clitoris enlarges.
- She'll notice that her vagina creates a natural lubricant which makes sex smoother and more enjoyable.
- Her labia will flatten out and open up and the inside of her vagina will lengthen and widen (preparing for you know what). All this happens because blood rushes to the pelvic area, which is called engorgement, and creates a pleasurably warm sensation in that area (I'm sure you've felt it!).
We're just getting started, so to find out what happens next, read more.
- As arousal continues, everything becomes even more enlarged and all the changes mentioned above become more pronounced, yet the woman's clitoris actually retracts under the hood and gets 50 percent shorter right before she climaxes.
- When the woman reaches orgasm, her skin will flush and muscles all over her body will continue to contract. Blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing rates will continue to rise.
- In the vagina itself, she'll feel rhythmic contractions in the outer part of the vagina, in her uterus, and anus. The muscle contractions actually have a purpose — they help to suck semen higher up into the vagina, making it easier for sperm to swim to your egg and help you get pregnant. These intense pulses happen about once every second. Mild orgasms have three to five pulses, and intense orgasms have 10 to 15!
- The uterus, labia, and clitoris then return to their normal size, and the woman feels extreme muscle relaxation. At this point, some women may be able to respond to further stimulation so they can have additional orgasms.
So ladies, did you learn something new?

Wow, I had no idea about the purpose of the contractions. That's really interesting.
1Wow ummm good to know?
2TMI for real. Somethings are better left a mystery
3"Her labia will flatten out and open up' For Easters sake...i was eating lunch Dear!
I knew about the purpose of the contractions and all that wonderful stuff. When are we going to get an article on how to have multiple orgasms??
Pelvic floor exercises have been proven to have absolutely no effect!
4Tee, on some Discovery Channel program, they had a laparoscopic camera or whatever they use, to show what actually happens during the contractions. This suction cup like part rhythmically dips into a small reservoir where the semen would be. It did leave me wondering about the timing of these things, though.
5I watched that program too, I think on TLC, it was awesome! My husband even watched it with. They even made one on puberty that was so up to date and my sister and a friend of mine were just in awe with it, we wondered why they don't show this in school?
6How is this TMI? it's *your* body! geez... at least some of us found it interesting and informative.
7Princess, its my opinion that its TMI. why is that a problem?
8Well, this section *is* called "Love and Sex"... I don't think it's that inappropriate to have a scientific description of sex, but hey, whatever.
9Notice, if you will, the joke i made after saying it was TMI. Kind of denotes a jokey kind of comment, not all together serious about that Dear Sugar, writer of sex and whatnot was telling us information that didnt pertain to her subject.......but in the future, this is a site for personal opinions lets all carry on with that.
10No, I didn't learn anything new.
11I learned about this is biology.
12The people in the photo sure do get a lot of action on this site!
13good to know
14A good refresher is always nice.
15These are the exact same bullet points from Here: http://www.dearsugar.com/329386
lol for those of you that thought the information sounded familiar
16I found it informative. everything in the human reproductive system does have a purpose, huh?
17Very informative. I could have used this info in my early 20s...hehe...
18interesting...and to the person who said about the folks in the picture...yea..they do get alot of action on this site don't they?! LOL
i think its time for a new picture..
19wow i when i got i "sex flush" i thought i was just embarrassed about my orgasm... good to know...
20With all this talk lately in the media about Orgasmic Meditation and that it came about from something that's been around and has been called the Venus Butterfly Technique, Extended Sexual Orgasm (ESO), Extended Massive Orgasm (EMO) and the original DOing or Deliberate Orgasm and have been demonstrating for more than 40 years that women can have orgasms with literally hundreds of contractions and last from several minutes to an hour or longer that some still describe "intense orgasms have 10 to 15!" contractions and people still ooh and aah like it's some big deal. Is the world still flat?
21I agree with BrendaK, we educate ourselves about everything else. It's about time someone focused on what and how we work. Maybe then the what will follow will be the "perfect" partner. Let's be happy about the progress. As far as the pelvic exercises not being effective, I beg to differ....try the exercises while your man is still inside you before, during, or after a climax. Somebody will be happy!
22very much so. ive never had an orgasm during sex though, just foreplay
2310 to 15? LOL, that's my *light* side. But then again, I've had orgasms that have lasted for more than three minutes before, sooo...maybe I'm weird >.<</p> 24
wooow best
