Now that Spring has sprung, it's time to start thinking about Summer! If you have plans to hit the beach, a comfy and flattering bathing suit is a must, but I'm with you if you're dreading that shopping trip. Before getting too discouraged, I have some easy tips for making bathing suit shopping as painless as possible. To see my dos and don'ts, just read more.
| Do |
Don't |
- Shop with your body shape in mind.
- Bring a close friend with you if you need a second opinion.
- Get a spray tan before shopping — nothing is worse than trying on suits when you're feeling pasty white.
- Make sure the suit fits properly. If your top is too big, it won't do your girls justice, and if your bottoms are too small, it'll cut into your side — not a good look.
- Look in a three-way mirror so you can check out your backside.
- Choose a color or print that flatters your skin tone, hair, and eye color.
- Shop online (if the suits are returnable) so you can try them on in the comfort of your own home.
|
- Go bathing suit shopping on a full stomach.
- Berate yourself or fixate on what's "wrong" with your body — pay attention to the entire package.
- Forget that fluorescent lights never do you justice.
- Pay attention to the size of the suit. Most bathing suits run particularly small.

always try on a bigger size so you're not bulging out everywhere
and i agree, don't go on a full stomach. you feel skinnier when you're hungry. starve yourself all morning before you go
and i also agree about the tan. i have been going to the tanning salon for a couple weeks so i am tan for summer. it will make the bathing suit shopping experience much better. i also always make sure to have nice makeup and hair going on because you never feel good if you look bad...i can try on a beauty dress and still feel ugly if i dont have my hair and makeup nice so it will be the same way with the suit!
1My one piece of advice:
Go to a place that sells bathignsuits in seperates!
Target does this or some stores that specialize in bathingsuits. This way you can try on any size for top and bottom and have a variety of styles for both. This way you won't have to compromise size if you top and bottom is different and you can have any pattern in any fit that is comforatble for you!
2pasty white? It would take a hell of a lot of Fair & Lovely to make me white.
3I agree on most points- BUT
1. Don't go shopping on a full stomach- I don't know about some people, but when my blood sugar gets low, I get incredibly irritable-and there is nothing worse than seeing myself in a bathing suit when I am pissed off. Don't eat like a full pancake breakfast or anything, but for God's sake-at least have a piece of fruit so you don't feel grumpy or starving.
2. Get a spray tan- There is nothing wrong with being pale, even in a swimsuit-there are lots of beautiful women with fair skin, and we don't want to look like an orange oompa loompa...or even worse....Lindsey Lohan. Go shopping the shade that you are and probably will continue to be, unless you want to continue paying for those fake spray tans. You want a color of swimsuit that will flatter your own beautiful God given complexion.
4BUT DO look pretty, wear nice makeup and do your hair so you feel confident and beautiful.
I hate fluorescent lights!!
5Ugh, I'm not looking forward to this day, when I go shopping for my swim suit this year..
6Yay! I can't wait to wear the new ones I bought!
7Another do: wear a thong to the store so you can get a good idea of what the suit will look like without taking your undies off.
8the only problem I have is finding a top that fits me AND looks good. I'm a D cup and I have an enormous sternum, seriously, my boobs are quite far apart... so Its soooo hard to find a bathing suit that doesn't make me look like a creature or something... haha I've been buying Lucky Brand Jeans swimsuits the past 2 years... they have the best tops for my body type.
9Oh, and I look better in florescent lighting... weird, huh?
10Everything at Target runs small on me but especially their bathing suits. I've bought L and XL suits there when the rest of my clothing are all XS/S's.
I love bathing suit specialty stores like Everything But Water
11I never understood why everyone always says that fluorescent light isn't flattering. Like the SUN is any more forgiving?
12I agree with amelioratelj, I wouldn't eat a whole 3 course meal before going, but don't "not eat" because low blood sugar makes me cranky too. Id rather feel a little chubby in front of the mirror, but because I'm not cranky, I know it's only because I just ate. And also, If you go into a specialty store, most of the employees can help you find a cut that flatters you most.
13Haha that IS kind of true about target, I have C cups and had to buy XL tops. And L bottoms. I'm usually L and L or L on top and M on the bottom. The ones I bought are super cute though so I don't mind
14My breasts are too small for 95% of target size S tops... I always thought they ran big
apparently I am just flat chested.
oh well
15I was hoping this would be a guide, to help with what styles suit certain body types, etc, not just stating the obvious.
16If I had a body like hers, I'd always be buying new swimsuits.
17Princess, if I had a body like hers I'd probably just go around naked.
18I'm with Jinx. I also thought this would be more of a guide to buying the right suit by body type not a common sense shopping tips. Also, what does this have to do with love and relationships?
19I agree that going shopping hungry is the worst idea ever. I need to be in a very good mood for bikini shopping!
20What helps me is intensifying my workouts. Exercising always makes me feel sexier.
I'm with princess and smacks on this one. I don't think don't exist for a body like that...
21being able to buy separates are key!!
22And nothing wrong with being pale. I'm pale and it is what it is, I'm not going to do a spray tan and look dirty, orange or both.
23I love the bikini season, I have to get at least 2 bikinis each year, I get bored wearing same one all the time. My biggest problem is deciding which ones to get, they have so many nice ones now. I bought mine at VS this year.
24bbfk gave a good piece of advice because you should always try on bottoms but granny panties are not good under a bathing suit.
I have to by seperates because my chest is pretty small and my hips and butt are getting huge. (i'm not mad about my butt though, I love it)
25I went to an online site again this year and my size - men's 36 - is already "Out of Stock" in most. I got a few 38's awhile back, as well as 36's. Mine cover all that is needed. I always laugh at the women who "WANT" to be noticed at the beach and then COMPLAIN when us guys do the once-over look. But, if I am being "checked out", I don't mind at all. I'm not the best-looking guy, but I'm not the worst. One female friend and I went to a pool party and had fun. The guys gave her a thumbs-up and the women did the same for me. I however, like to be active, so pool parties will be weekends only.
26Often it depends on what angle the light is coming from as well as what kind of light it is. I believe some fluorescent lights imitate natural sunlight, which is generally flattering.
27Does the spray tan apply to all women? Hello, some of us are blessed with color 365 days of the year. That rule is dumb, especially considering the love I have for my pale sisters keeping the faith, : )
28amelioratelj: Totally agree with both your points. I get low blood sugar when I don't eat too. I get super grumpy and another problem with low blood sugar is it causes you to not be able to make decisions...very bad when trying to decide on a bathing suit.
And for real, being tan is so stupid. One shade of skin isn't better than another. If you are paler, go buy a bathing suit that works for your paler complexion. Who wants everyone to be walking around the same color, that's boring and ugly. And I love my very pale freckled covered bf, he's cute, everyone doesn't need to be tan, LOL.
bbkf: Good tip, a thong helps a lot.
Smacks83: "Princess, if I had a body like hers I'd probably just go
29around naked. Ditto!!! LOL!!
The spray tan thing is dumb. What if you're pale and you burn in the sun? Then that cute little bathing suit you picked out to compliment your fake tone looks ridiculous on your pale sunburned skin when you actually wear it. Tan is NOT the only beautiful shade of skin!
30Ok i have a question for the sugar team and anyone or everyone who will read this:
is there ANYWHERE IN THE UNIVERSE where i can find a one peice that is mostly covering but STILL supportive for the girls?
I'm a 34DD, and have a 42" rump. with a 33 inch waist. i'm not tiny, but i'm more hourlgass than ANY swim suit has ever been able to conform to. seriously. two peices make my belly look bad (i'm a bit heavy in the tummy) and one peices make my boobs sag, unattractively.
also, any hopes in finding a cute top separate that doesn't make me look hookerish?
31I agree with amelioratelj, don't starve yourself before you go! But don't be all full and bloated also!
Anyway, if you plan on swimming they say it's actually better to get a bathing suit that's a little tight, because when it gets wet they tend to stretch a little and not fit as well, so keep that in mind, also. You don't want to run into the ocean and have a wave hit you and take your bottoms because they got bigger in the water!
32I love the top on that picture!
33Lol, for me, fluorescent lights make me look so much better since I'm brown!
As much as I love bikinis and would love wearing them, I'm a little conservative and don't feel comfortable being in public with an outfit that covers up just as much as your innerwear does.
34One of the things I do is to buy my bathing suit off season, that way is cheaper, especially in this economy.
35I agree with austerity. I don't see how buying a bikini is different from buying undies and bras.
36I totally agree with others about the tan thing-- I am pale and cannot tan but I am still pretty you can ask my friends or boyfriend. So, go shopping for a swimsuit when you are the color you will be most of the summer.
37Flickster - Try aerinrose.com The one pieces have hidden underwires and they don't look like grandma suits
I have a two piece from that site right now and it's very supportive. You buy according to your bra size so the fit is pretty accurate. However, the bottoms run a little small.
38To help with our egos a bit here, I am pretty sure that the pic of the hot girl in her white bikini has been re-touched! LOL
Check out the curve of her body above the bikini up her armpits...I don't know anyone that is that 'round!' LOL
