Lordy! I thought Jim Cramer was going to crack last night on The Daily Show when CNBC's ongoing kerfuffle with Jon Stewart came to a head. His voice wavered as Jon accused him of one-sided journalism — dishing out financial advice while not acknowledging the dirty work that goes on behind the markets.
How would old man Cramer know? Well, he used to run a hedge fund and manipulated the market for sport. Jon submits evidence with video clips from his hedge-fund days that goes a lot like this:
I would encourage anyone in a hedge fund to do it. Because it's legal. And it's a very quick way to make money — and very satisfying. By the way no one else in the world would ever admit that but I don't care. I'm not gonna say it on TV.

His voice cracks a lot during interviews. I always think he is about to burst into a fit of tears.
1Love Jon Stewart..
Love watching Cramer squirm.
2I thought Stewart was brilliant - just hand him another Peabody now.
3Cramer did redeem himself to an extent in my eyes - the fact that he did the whole half hour, that he offered mea culpas more than lame excuses - I still think he's a jerk, but not an evil jerk.
That interview was just plain hard to watch. I respect what Jon Stewart did, but I felt like he came off like a bully...and granted, the reason he did is because Cramer seemed ready to cry, not because Stewart was being particularly mean...but it was just tough.
4You're a better person than me then, Steph! Yes, I respect and appreciate that Cramer agreed to subject himself to a half hour face-to-face with Jon Stewart, but am appalled with they hypocrisy.
It's not fair to suggest that the financial industry is in bed with the few people on Wall Street who were manipulating the market for sport? When there was a video of him very clearly stating that that's what he himself practiced?! That's some nerve!
And the whole "we should have been reporting these mistakes all along" thing is absurd since he was one of those making these mistakes.
I think this was an excellent report from Jon Stewart.
5By the way, the original videos Citizen posted were much longer. Why were they edited down so much?
6That was uncomfortable to watch but I'm glad Stewart didn't back down.
7It does surprise me that Cramer was willing to do it in the first place...I think my pride would definitely keep me from doing something ilke that.
8I'm a fan of the Daily Show, but I really don't like it when Jon Stewart does this. I'm not a fan of Cramer's but it seems like Stewart bullied Cramer, when really, the problem isn't Cramer per se, but the whole CNBC crew. It just seems like sometimes, he's an attack dog who pushes and pushes and pushes until the person he doesn't like loses their TV show.
Which, I understand, since maybe millions of people listened to his financial advice and took it for reality, but it's just unsavory. I personally think that if you took Cramer's words as absolute truths for your personal portfolio, then you have other problems going on in your life as well if you're that naive and gullible.
9emily,
See, I don't feel Stewart was being so much a bully as being really really pissed off. Cramer has been parading around all sorts of news shows lately so he was kind of asking for it, in my opinion.
10Yeah, I guess I'll agree to that.
I just really hate the confrontational nature. I think it would be less uncomfortable for me to watch if Jon could be able to face off to a banking executive or with that guy who screamed about the bailout 'Losers'. One can dream, I guess...
11And I'll agree to this:
"I think it would be less uncomfortable for me to watch if Jon could be able to face off to a banking executive or with that guy who screamed about the bailout 'Losers'. "
12I get the impression that at some point this week, someone at NBC legal told Cramer to find a little humility. I think it was fair to have him stand in for the whole CNBC crew, since when things were good no one had any problem with giving him so much credit.
13I definitely give Cramer credit for being there. He certainly couldn't have expected this when the whole thing got started and I'm impressed that he stuck it out to the end. Also, in defense of John Stewart, he did say several times that he felt bad that Cramer had become the face of the issue because it was the whole CNBC approach to covering business news that he was railing against.
Hopefully, something positive will come of this. It was actually refreshing (although somewhat awkward to watch) that Cramer didn't get totally defensive.
14I think Cramer was an idiot for going on there knowing the clips that John had against him.
That being said, Stewart was great, very tough, makes me wonder sometimes who is really "fake news."
And yes, it wasn't a joke last night, he seemed seriously pissed!
15Jon Stewart is a complete dolt. Cramer is not infallible, but Jon Stewart is a legend in his own mind. He should stick to interviewing Brangelina and let the real journalists give the news.
16I thought Cramer handled it with grace- knowing what he was going to get. The reality is that his show is partially there to inform, partially to entertain. They need to be honest about what role they are playing but still...
17He handled the criticism WAY better than a couple of years ago when Jon Stewart was on Crossfire with Tucker Carlson who just got mad that Stewart was not being "funny"
Pretty tough to watch Cramer take the brunt of all the ills in finance journalism. Everybody is looking for a scapegoat. Good for Stewart for having staff weasels doing prodigious research to slam a guy for the populous. The You Tube generation enjoys this stuff. There is no grace in tearing a man down for your own entertainment and ratings. Was Stewart calling people out when the DOW was at 14K? Or is this just him playing up the cause de jeur as the market tanks and grabbing some ratings for himself. You or Stewart may not like the game but Cramer played by it, as far as we know, within the rules. It may not be pretty or...nice, but greed generally never is. Capitalism is what made this country as rich as it is. Rich people like Cramer are who helped build this country's wealth. Could things be better regulated? You bet. Could things be more fair? Sure, but life isn't fair. I have far less respect for Stewart today, and a lot more for Cramer for stepping into the buzzsaw.
18"You or Stewart may not like the game but Cramer played by it, as far as we know, within the rules."
Sure. But he flat-out denied he ever would play the game. That's what really upset me. Of course people make mistakes all the time. But I have more respect for a person who owns their mistake instead of denying and then stumbling through it.
19They're both getting better ratings out of this little game. Don't feel too bad.
20Fleur, if you're a viewer of the Daily Show you know that he does more serious guest interviews than he does 'Brangelinas.' He's more than a legend in his own mind when world leaders, religious leaders, and politicians from both sides of the aisle are willing to talk with him.
21Cavuto > Kramer
22Regardless of whether or not Jon Stewart should have done this interview, I have to question Jim Cramer's business ethics.
When I took Management 101 at Ole Miss, I was taught that just because something is legal doesn't mean it's ethical. There is basic litmus test when there is a question if something is morally right. You ask yourself, is this something I want reported on the front page of the paper so my colleagues, my friends, and my family know about it. If the answer is "no", you don't do it.
I question Mr. Cramer's character when I heard this part of his 2006 interview with TheStreet.com,
CRAMER: I would encourage anyone who is in the hedge fund unit ‘do it' because it is legal. It is a very quick way to make the money and very satisfying. By the way, no one else in the world would ever admit that but I don't care.
UNKNOWN: That's right and you can say that here.
CRAMER: I'm not going to say it on TV.
Enough said.
23Jon Stewart seems like a bully to me. This is what happens when you say something against Obama. Lesson learned, I'm sure.
24i missed the conversation they had about obama?
25Really, what does Obama have to do with this?
26He said that Obama was an amateur when it comes to the economy in the beginning of March. Suddenly he was on JS hitlist.
27Yep, that's why this is a story. Kramer exposed himself as not being a BHO kool-aid drinker, so now he's on the left's sh*tlist. You can't speak out against the chosen one without repercussions.
28Oooh, that's what set Stewart off! Not references to unethical behavior in thestreet.com interview, not hyping companies, not not catching the lies corporate leaders told him, not repeating those lies, not missing signs that some thing was going wrong with the economy...
29Poor Jon! He's going to be exhausted by the time he's finished reaming all Obama's critics.
Well, Stewart has alot of time and it's his job.
Kramer wasn't on the national medias' radar until his rant about BHO.
30I totally agree with splork. Well said!
31"Kramer wasn't on the national medias' radar until his rant about BHO."
That's only seems true to people who never read Forbes, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times or watched ABC or CBS news in the past year.
32oh my goodness conservatives truly believe everything goes back to obama, my boyfriend said the same thing. i couldnt even cramer vs stewart because we got into a huge argument over it! seriously, is there some sort of subliminal messages that only conservatives can receive?
33Actually, if you'd have done your research, you'd know that this whole thing started when Rick Santelli called failing homeowners "losers" (March 4th. It's on The Daily Show's website). JS then called the entire CNBC "cast" into question for providing financial advice when they obviously aren't qualified to. And please, don't say that these shows are meant to be "entertainment" when the promos pump up their hosts to be solid. In Cramer We Trust ring a bell?
34Anyway, I don't see how anyone could put John Stewart down for this. He's sticking up for YOU and YOUR hard earned money and 401k. And besides, the original target was Rick Santelli, but he was too much of a pansy to actually appear on the program. If anything, I do feel for Cramer a bit — he's just the poor sap that had the balls to show up and be the face of the argument (as John stated in his interview). Get over it. Obama is not the reason for everything.
