The Dos and Don'ts of Fighting With Your Significant Other

Mar 11 2009 - 7:30am

As we all know, relationships aren't always perfect [1], and since fighting is just a part of life, it's important to learn how to fight fairly. If you need some pointers on how to keep things in perspective when arguing with your significant other, check out my crucial dos and don'ts of fighting below. And if I've missed anything, be sure to share what works for you in the comments section below.

Do Don't
  • Do fight fairly.
  • Do think before you speak.
  • Do admit when you're wrong.
  • Do fight in private.
  • Do know when to call it quits and move on.
  • Do break the tension with laughter when the time is right.
  • Do kiss and make up when the fight is really over!
  • Don't fight after you've been drinking — you don't want to say or do something you'll regret.
  • Don't hit below the belt.
  • Don't bring up past arguments if they are not relevant.
  • Don't yell — you're much more efficient when you can hear each other talk.
  • Don't interrupt.
  • Don't leave anything unsaid.
  • Don't say that everything is OK if it's not.
