The who's who of DC gathered at the Kennedy Center tonight to wish Senator Ted Kennedy a happy 77th birthday. Bill Cosby hosted the event, and Lauren Bacall, Bernadette Peters, and James Taylor performed for the audience. Cosby wasn't the only person to make a joke. Teddy's niece Caroline, who saw her dreams of being a lawmaker fail this year, quipped: "I never thought I'd be in a room with so many senators."

One of those senators, Claire McCaskill, was in the audience, and shared the event with her followers on Twitter. She tweeted: "The Pres arrived at the end to lead us in singing Happy Birthday to Ted. Happy & sad."
Happy Birthday, Mr. Senator.

Geez, how nice to be at such a special occasion, participating just enough attention to have something to twitter.
1Happy birthday!
2Happy birthday Ted.
It has been a very long time ago but I just can't help but wondering if he ever thinks about Mary Jo Kopechne (died at age 28) and all the birthdays she never celebrated.
3Why would he? He didn't do it on purpose. It was the evils of drinking...
4undave, drinking yes... but then what about the cover up? hmmm
5"my thesis is that a strong spiritual understanding grants us freedom to see things in a more enlightened way. God's way."
6Steph, not nice to take someone's word out of context. You know that.
I also wrote:
"Many people believe there are right and wrongs"
Poor Mary Jo Kopechne's case, what happened was tragic and very wrong. Are you disagreeing?
7It was a very much investigated tragic accident.
8You don't apply seeing things "in a more enlighted way. God's way" to judging other people?
I am certainly not one to judge anyone and did not mean to imply that I am.
What I do believe is that Ted Kennedy had an accident (probably caused by intoxication) but his actions afterward were deplorable. I found it shocking and still do that he never served time in jail for his coverup of the accident. The girl might have been saved had he gone for help.
Surely you believe what he did was wrong Steph? There are right and wrongs.
9It was an accident; his actions afterwards were investigated repeatedly - knowing what I know about Ted Kennedy, I would call his actions confused and unfortunate, but not criminal or malicious.
It is disingenuous to claim that you did not mean to imply judgment by bringing up the accident on a thread about his birthday 40 years later.
10I don't think that's 'God's way'
well that is your opinion steph. YOu have an opinion and you are entitled to it. I am entitled to mine.
