Is it possible to read anything that doesn't belabor the economy today? Nope. Not even here! But I've had it with the apocalyptic news and found 10 things that more than make do in a recession. Besides, someone other than alcohol and cigarette companies needs to profit, right?
So who looks up when money is down?
- Movies: Ticket sales are up 17.5 percent this year.
- Environment: Afford not, waste not.
- Dating: Some of you said the rise in dating was just gold digging, but banker girlfriends say there's no pot.
- Music: Finally! The music industry is not complaining.
- European vacations: The euro and the pound still may be worth more than the dollar, but conversion rates are translating much better.
- Psychics: Uncertain times call for uncertain methods of inquiry.
- Entrepreneurs: It's a great time to have money!
- Education: Graduate school is a time-honored way to weather a recession.
- Careers: Short-staffed companies have opportunities for eager employees. Not applicable? See above.
- Life: No, really. Death rates drop as unemployment rises.

I don't understand how some of these things are up. I would think people would not want to spend $10 to see a movie and I would think illegal downloading would be more likely when cash is short?
1Yes, the education industry is still booming!
2about #10..... That actually does make sense since work stresses me out and makes me really hate my life sometimes.
zeze, I do agree with you, however, not everyone (is smart enough to) is cutting back (even though they should) and would rather use entertainment to "forget" the current problems of our country.
3Yay for still being in school! (This is the only circumstance in which I will be grateful for still being a student) I just hope the economy has turned around by the time I graduate from law school next year.
4The problem is smileyface, many of those college funds, and parents savings, as well your grandparents annuity payments counted on to live on, are down the crapper and Pension funds around the nation are in crises.
5Movie ticket sales are not up for me. I've been going to the movies even less often. Now once every two-three months.
6I plan on spending lots of money on movies this summer. Between the Depp/Bale movie, Terminator, Wolverine...definitely helps me get my mind off all the crappy things in life right now!
7"Depp/Bale"
I've never had such a big smile on my face
It might have to do with the fact that there have been a few pretty good movies in the theaters. I have actually gone much more now than ever. I dont think we're stupid for spending since I budget pretty good. Some people would rather spend money on certain things rather than other things.
8By the way Em, have you seen the new tralier for Wolverine?
9My husband and I are comforting ourselves that if I have to be in grad school for another year to complete my interminable PhD, this is the time to do it, since there aren't any jobs out there anyways.
10Movie tix sales being up isn't surprising. Sometimes people just need an escape (Isn't that what people were doing durring the Great Depression? Watching happy movies that made their lives feel less miserable?)
I still try to see a movie every now and again, I just bring my own snacks so I'm not paying for insane prices for movie snacks ($3.75 for a $1 bottle of water...seriously?)
11Life: No, really. Death rates drop as unemployment rises.
LOL, Damn can't die yet, need to more work hours next week. Ok, I'll just die next year, if the market turns better.
12momma--YES! I have! I love it! What an amazing cast, huh?
...and the Depp/Bale trailer is out too!
It seems like it's going to be more
Depp-centered, but hey, no complaints here
13Im so happy I did the 4 year program at my law school. Hopefully i can ride this recession out in the library!
14I really can't be a glass half full person on this issue
15dont forget the armed forces! my friend tried to sign up to join the airforce and there is a waiting list, he ended up in the navy!
16I think a lot of that has to do with the type of training the applicant is looking for, flutterpie
