They say the winners always write the history books, but can you write yourself into a winner? Thirty-one Republicans representatives think so, and they've introduced a resolution that declares victory in Iraq thanks to George W. Bush.
The bill's sponsor Steve King says Bush's surge strategy secured victory in Iraq. But it's a fragile victory, since withdrawing troops too quickly could erase the accomplishments. King explains, "This resolution is intended to send an important message to President Obama – that history will judge him harshly should he choose to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory."
Last September General Patraeus said Iraq doesn't lend itself to a victory slogan. By claiming victory thanks to Bush, these Republicans will either brilliantly pass the responsibility for whatever happens now to Obama, or make a political mistake similar to Bush's "Mission Accomplished" banner. Which do you think it will be?

If I were a lawmaker I would introduce legislation that limited the amount of stupid resolutions made every year.
1This really is revoltingly cynical. If Bush won the war, there'd be no need for this resolution.
2All right! Now can we official change the name of Iraq to "Iraq bought to you by the American People & Pepsi!"
The exclamation point in the new name is absolutely crucial.
3If the war in Iraq were already won, I wouldn't be playing the role of a single parent right now. Yes, Iraq is stable but until all of the troops come home, we haven't won anything. In my humble opinion.
4I think we are on the right track, it has been a hard and long road and there is still more ahead, but I'm happy with where we are headed.

6Regardless of my personal view on the war, and the political agenda behind this... you can't say anything about whether a war was won or not until it's OVER.
7If Iraq proves to be a nation with a free press, and free elections, Iraq will indeed be an astonishing success. We probably will not be able to judge the magnitude of the success for another three to five years.

10Wow, that's winning? I think these people should concentrate on what they were elected to do instead on franticly trying to repair and legitimize Bush's "legacy".

12Have we begun removing our troops? Troop removal only begins after the war is finished. Therefore the war is over. We'll see if the benefits are lasting.

14Good Lord, we are still technically at war with North Korea, and we still have troops in South Korea, and I am probably one of the VERY few, if not the only one on Sugar that remembers that “war”. We are further along now in Iraq, then we are on the Korean peninsula today. I think it is safe to say we have a claim to victory in Iraq; all that is in question is the magnitude and significance of that victory. As I said in my earlier post we will not know that for the next three to five years. :fogy:
