Michelle Obama Honors Women's History Month

Yesterday Michelle Obama marked Women's History Month by visiting servicewomen at the Women's Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery. She not only commended their service, but also their efforts to close the gender-equality gap.

Funny then that the empowering event ended by inviting the women to tea (what else do we drink?) and, I can only imagine, freshly baked scones (with seasonal fruit). Why so negative? I'm not. Amused? Yes. Annoyed? No.

It was, after all, nothing more than a friendly gesture. And a shout-out to Eleanor Roosevelt, who extended the same invite to servicewomen in World War II. Since no other first lady has invited servicewomen to the White House, the idea was met with cheers and laughter. Not surprising, considering a handful of women attending served in World War II.

To see pictures of the event, check out my slideshow.

Whoa, bitter much, Citizen? Something about the tone of this piece is really negative when MO is doing something great to honor these women who are so often overlooked. Just because they had tea doesn't make it condescending in the least.

Last time i checked you get invited for tea not for coffee especially in such positions and i am sure coffee will be served as will other things besides scones. I do miss high tea. I dont get what's so funny, it's not sexist or bringing down the feminist movement, it's just a beverage lol

I am actually digging her outfit. I had an event on Sunday for WHM, this is great and I hope it continues.

Since they were military women, should she have offered to knock back a couple of beers instead?

Actually if you read the article, it was a Brigadier General who brought up the tea:

"Brigadier General Wilma L. Vaught introduced the first lady, thanking Obama for making servicewomen and their welfare a priority in the new administration.

Vaught said that Obama was "following in the footsteps of Eleanor Roosevelt of World War II fame." Vaught said that Eleanor Roosevelt had invited servicewomen to tea at the White House.

Vaught, who served in the Air Force for more than 28 years and was one of the few military women in the Vietnam War who was not a nurse, turned to the side where Obama stood. "During my time in the military and the years since," Vaught said, "I've never known of the first lady issuing such an invitation.'' Vaught then asked the audience whether anyone would like to have tea at the White House.

    The audience laughed and cheered.

"All right," Obama said, smiling. "You're all invited. I think that's an excellent idea."

What a great honor to have!

I am a little confused on the tone of the posting as well. I don't see what's so humorous about having tea.

As an artist living in Maine, I have served the Women in Military Memorial in several capacities, and I was heartened to discover that the First Lady actually visited this hallowed place at the foot of Arlington National Cemetery.

My comment is directed to all those who have commented before me. The Women's Memorial is in a catastrophic fiscal bind as I write, serving us day to day not week to week or month to month. What is needed now by the Memorial which is a non-profit, is money, not verbiage. I would implore all of you to take out your checkbooks and make a donation to the Women's Memorial, 1 Memorial Drive, Arlington, VA 22211 or to call them at (703) 931-4204 or at least to connect with your representatives and remind them that the Women in Military Memorial needs their help.
