Comedian Janeane Garofalo came on Countdown With Keith Olbermann last night to play psychologist. Her subject was Rush Limbaugh and Republicans in general. Her prognosis for Rush? He's a narcissist who also struggles with self-loathing. Keith and Janeane also tried to figure out why Rush only has a 37 percent approval rating among women. She concluded that the type of woman that falls for Rush is exactly like Adolph Hitler's girlfriend. Ouch.
But perhaps, more irreverently, Janeane called out RNC chair Michael Steele as suffering from Stockholm syndrome. She said:
Michael Steele. Who's that black guy in the Republican party who suffers from Stockholm syndrome. Which means you try to curry favor with the oppressor. . . . Any female or person of color in the Republican party is struggling with Stockholm syndrome.
Do you think her sweeping comments went too far?

Wow she's a moron.
1I thought comedians were supposed to be funny?
2She's a comedian.
3Comedians talk sh*t about everyone all the time...its what they do.
by the way...I thought the joke was weak..not funny.
4I do wonder how different the reaction would be if the target wasn't Republicans.
5Not the kind of interview I want to watch, but she didn't say anything worse than Ann Coulter would.
6And Im sure theres a lot of people who feel the same about Garofolo as some of Coulter.
7she's a comedian, so blah.
8But I greatly dislike the idea that minorities who are part of the Republican party are treated as "tratiors" or "brainwashed"
Everyone should make their own decisions and not be disparaged for it, isn't saying that minorities really should only be in one party (and if they arent they suffer from stockholm syndrome), taking away many freedoms and liberties?
Ah Janeane, you who have a tattoo that says "think" on your arm, as if you have to remind yourself to do that something you dont know how to do.
Listen she is a blatant liberal, democrat who hates the republican party, but isnt "funny" in any way about it, she is supposed to be a comedian but comes off as a angry bitter mess of words.
if it were up to her, all flags would be burnt and all republicans/conservatives would be made to burn with them.
9Yeah I agree with CG, she's not even funny and comes across as really angry and bitter. Meh.
10I thought she was an actress, no?
11Either way she sounds like the liberal version of Rush Limbaugh. So everyone who hates Rush and says he should have no voice in the public, should say the same about this women. But if i were a minority republican, I would want to go beat her @$$ right now.
12That was just offensive to me. I didn't see it as a joke since it is not funny and it is blatantly saying anyone not white and a Republican must be a traitor - meaning they don't belong in that party and white people in the Republican party are all oppressors!
13Oh Shi... I just realized she said women too.... Find her address for me please!
14really I am just kidding so don't go reporting me
15She said women too, as if wanting small government and low taxes is an exclusive to those with Y chromosomes. And other than abortion, what about the republican party is anti woman?
16Meh. Don't care to watch it, but again, not much different than someone like Coulter saying lame things, too.
17Janeanes enlightened thinking
"The reason a person is a conservative Republican is because something is wrong with them. That's science — that's neuroscience. You cannot be well adjusted, open-minded, pluralistic, enlightened and be a Republican. It's counterintuitive"
I think she is just mad that her DJ gig at Air America ended cause no one wanted to listen to her spit nonsense.
18"She said women too, as if wanting small government and low taxes is an exclusive to those with Y chromosomes. And other than abortion, what about the republican party is anti woman?"
she is basically perpetuating stereotypes - women must hate guns, love universal health care to take care of children, must hate war, must want everyone to be taken care of by government funding - ironically enough, all these stereotypes of women come from a traditional conservative background...
19I think to "steryotype" minorities to certain associations is generally wrong i.e. all blacks are dems etc. However people need to loosen up a bit she is a comedian who happens to talk politics a lot and I found it funny as hell!
20The fact that she said that tells me she really doesn't KNOW what the republican party stands for and she is obviously lacking information.
I have liked some movies she was in and thought she was funny in those. Otherwise, she as far as her standup she is terribly opinionated.
21I used to love her back in the day, love the move "the truth about cats and dogs" "romy and michelle" untill i saw an interview with her saying that she HATED those movies, and loathes the people that love them......proving that she only does what she does...for the money
22I couldn't watch it after 5 mins, it just wasn't flowing for me. Like garble.
23I don't care to watch it although I used to be a fan.
Well, regarding the poll, I'd say that she can say whatever she wants and of course many can agree or disagree with her pov. The wonderful thing about freedom of speech
24Ooooh "The Truth About Cats and Dogs" Yeah, I love that movie too, CG.
That's when I
started liking her
I guess she hated those movies, eh? Hmmm...
25Really?!
She said she hated people who love them? How rude! My favorite movie with
her was The Matchmaker. I loved that movie. I did also like The Truth about Cats and Dogs.
26Yes, absolutely. Freedom of speech=good, but that doesn't mean we can't also say how much we think saying what she said is rude, appalling, insulting etc.
27I guess freedom of speech truly applies to only liberals, since people like Don Imus they force to resign, but hey.
28"I don’t know if you heard me talking to Jenny a while ago, but I was saying that first you have to be an *sshole and then comes the conservatism. You gotta be a dick to cleave onto their ideology."
29When I see the American flag, I go, 'Oh my God, you're insulting me.'
30Acutally I think the person who made the comment about freedom of speech made it very clear that it was for everyone even people we disagree with..... lets not argue for the sake of arguing.
31"regarding the poll, I'd say that she can say whatever she wants and of course many can agree or disagree with her pov. "
But people like Don Imus are forced to step down. It's not just for the sake of arguing, it's a valid point.
32Just referencing recent history.
33With the crap Rush says I don't feel bad about anything anyone says about him.
34She's entitled to her opinions. But her statement: "You cannot be well adjusted, open-minded, pluralistic, enlightened and be a Republican. It's counterintuitive", is stereotypical. Offensive even. Much like when I refer to her as an idiot and a moron.
35"I guess freedom of speech truly applies to only liberals, since people like Don Imus they force to resign, but hey."
Imus isn't a conservative host, he hates Limbaugh and mocks conservative hosts regularly. Limbaugh hasn't been taken off the air, Coulter's still working - so who's being persecuted?
36Michael Steele be the man
37
gaucho
38But think about it: how open minded are you if you are against people living lifestyles different than yours. The assumed stance of a Conservative is that they are against homosexuality as well as other things that are taboo in their own belief systems. Who's to say their opinions on how people live are right?
With that being said, I'm assuming this is what she was referring to with her statement about the neuroscience.
39Thank goodness for Janeane Garofalo. She sees ignorance and hatred on the right and decides it's her calling to match it with ignorance and hatred from the left.
40Bad behavior is not excused by someone else’s bad behavior.
41No it's not Grandpa and I hate to see all Republicans dragged into this, but in Rush's case you can't expect to say the thing he does and not get called out for it.
42The only bad thing is that she makes other people who hate Rush look bad too. I really don't want people to get the idea she's representing my views.
The key word Ladychaos used IS assumed. Garofalo assumed the worst AND of all (R)'s.
But Lady, now we're going to shoot in several directions with this because what you're talking about is the religious right being against gay marriage and other taboo things (which are?). Not all republicans are of the religious right. I'm not myself, however the religious right is concerned with morals and frankly what's wrong with keeping morals?
I'm just saying as a non-religious republican I understand their point of view. It may not be my point of view. But those who have a different one aren't "against" me and vice versa.
Blah! I started to say a bunch more stuff but I just went off topic.
43It's so hard to be clear on these things sometimes. Hubby keeps comin here where's this, that? Yatta yatta.
44Oh yeah, blame it on a guy, hartsfull
45
46That "religious right" thing is driving me crazy. I'm worried that someone took it wrong. I wasn't meaning it that it was bad or wrong.
But I read the thing again and it does sound like I'm saying there is something bad about the religous right. I shouldn't have even used that term. Curse me and my stupid lack of tact brain.
47i think its so funny when people assume that because your a "minoirity" than you have to be a democrat, isnt that same kind of ignorance and oppressive thinking that dems knock republicans for?
48I think Janeane's description of Rush as (the oppressor) is a little ridiculous. First of all why on earth give him that much power when the fact of the matter is Rush's opinions are no different than most other solid conservatives.
I think the problem at least for liberals and radical minded fringe groups is that Rush is extremely intelligent and intellectual armed with with arsenal of words and a sword for a tongue and he knows how to use it. You don't debate Rush unless you're on your game and if you're not he will get you and make a fool out of you. This is the problem my liberal minded brothers & sisters have with Rush, he makes us look foolish and does it so well but he is no oppressor give me a break.
49I really resent the implication that just because I'm a female I should be a ragging feminist. I believe that the amount of success you achieve is directly related to how good you are at what you do and how hard you work. It has nothing to do with gender. She has a serious victim complex and I can't believe this interview actually took place with him agreeing with everything she said!
