President Obama can't seem to catch a break from the Clintons when it comes to this "hope" thing. During the primaries, Hillary mocked him saying:
The skies will open, the light will come down, celestial choirs will be singing and everyone will know we should do the right thing and the world will be perfect. Maybe I’ve just lived a little long, but I have no illusions about how hard this is going to be.
Now that he has the job, Bill wants Obama to sounds more hopeful. In a new interview with ABC, the president from Hope, AR said he:
[Liked] the fact that [Obama] didn't come in and give us a bunch of happy talk. I'm glad he shot straight with us. . . . I just want the American people to know that he's confident that we are gonna get out of this and he feels good about the long run. . . . I like trying to educate the American people about the dimensions and scope of this economic crisis. . . . I just would like him to end by saying that he is hopeful and completely convinced we're gonna come through this.
It's true that since his victory speech on election night Obama's been peddling somberness much more than hope. Would you like to see the president be more optimistic when it comes to the economy?

Although his more recent mini speeches and press conferences due lack the timber and climax of his rally speeches I do not find them lacking in hope or confidence. In fact in those thunderous optimistic speeches back in the campaign optimism was carefully portioned with realism. He said back then that this was not going to be easy, that it would take every one to do this, not just him not just the government and more importantly he made it clear back then that it would take years not months to pull this country out of the nose dive that it's in.
I believe and I get from him that he believes that we're going to do this because the only other alternative is to dissolve as the country we are. That is not an option so you have to believe that we're going to turn things around and in that common belief it is where we will find the resolve to do it.
1I'll be happy if he sticks to the truth - stage managing can be overdone.
2He couldnt sound genuine to me if he really was now anyway.
3But if he didn't try his best to scare the hell out of us, congress might not pass his spending bills!
4There needs to be a balance. People always need hope but overdoing it is just going to make the whole thing look like it's just for show.
5You can't be positive *AND* fear monger at the same time.
He can go with either, I don't really care.
6I'll take the dopey campaign talk to fear mongering anyday.
7I don't think anyone needs or wants any smoke blown up their collective asses these days.
8Candidate Obama, ran on a platform of hope, remember: "yes we can" chanted over and over as he spoke about hope and change you can count on? President Obama has been talking down the economy since he was elected, claiming DISASTER is just around the corner, and certain if he did not get his "stimulus" bill TODAY, every day of delay brought us closer to the precipice. His hero FDR, was always pictured with a jaunty smile, and a cigarette pointed up. He was positive and talked about the GREATNESS of our country. Great men inspire confidence.
9Negativity and hopelessness just work at cross purposes to recovery. Because it puts fear in everyone, even those with stable finances, who then pull back in their spending.
10Those who can, should spend.
It is too late now, if President Obama came into office, claiming that Hope and change had arrived, and though we may see some bad weather down the line, Americans are strong, vibrant, and hard working, and can overcome any obstacle. Cut payroll taxes for everyone for the next two years, small businesses would be able to continue, those working people that are in the bottom 2/3 of our salary scale would be the major beneficiaries, and would have additional money to spend immediately. It would make our Social Security and Medicare deficit worse, that is true, so instead of going broke in 10 years, it would go broke in eight. Once the economy started to turn around, he would have had a track record of accomplishment that would inspire confidence in his ability to lead this country. Then as he came up with programs he wanted do to see implemented, his opponents would not have much of a leg to stand on.
11He is a fear mongerer---- worse than Bush.
