Remember when everyone cared about things being green and organic instead of cheap? Well if the stimulus works, the days of organic wine and roses may return. Here are 10 directions money is headed to ensure everything comes up green again.
- $6 billion for clean and safe water, creating more than 200,000 jobs
- $4.5 billion for greening federal buildings
- State energy grants to fund renewable-energy projects
- $2.5 billion for energy-efficiency and renewable-energy research and development
- More effective tax credits for home-efficiency upgrades
- $5 billion for the Weatherization Assistance Program, creating approximately 90,000 jobs
- $2 billion for advanced batteries
- $9.3 billion for intercity rail, including high-speed rail
- $27.5 billion for highways (though must also be used for fuel-efficient public transportation)
- Smaller projects: wildfire prevention, trail maintenance in National Parks, and EPA Superfund cleanup

LOL, Liberty is that the vegitable garden in front of San Francisco city hall?
1I think part of the resistance of a main stream green life style here in the U.S. is that it won't create new jobs. Well any time you have a completely new industry especially an industry that will be used world wide you're going to have jobs coming out of the wood work and up the ying yang. This is an entirely new industry, new manufacturing and because it is a new industry not in idea but in main stream application there is still room for vast technological advancement which well keep the industry growing.
2$6 Billion for clean water? I haven't heard of anyone dying from unclean water recently...
3Oh you don't want to mess with unclean water Carrie Sue. I remember back in 92 when I went to Mexico with Habbitat for Humanity to build a school and some homes. They made us rabbit stew on day. OoooWeee! I was in the bathroom for a week. But I tell ya nothings bothered me since I can eat just about anything now, lol.
4I don't think people have to die from unclean water first for it to be a part of the stimulus package--water pollution (and the fate of the organisms living in the water as well) should always be considered an important issue, IMO.
5Clean water cuts medical bills, energy efficiency creates jobs and cuts energy costs. Makes sense to me.
6"Remember when everyone cared about things being green and organic instead of cheap"
No.
7Considering millions of people in this world die from unsafe drinking water every year, I think it's pretty important to make sure that ours is clean and safe.
8I just can't remember having any trouble with unclean water in any of the three states I've lived in. Have you had troubles, Steph? And $6B is an AWFUL lot of money.
9Sarah, I wasn't talking about the entire world. This bill isn't about the entire world. I was referring to America.
10I know that Carrie
11But it wouldn't take much for our water system to break down, or for contamination to occur. And with the creation of that many jobs, why would this be a bad thing?
12Well look at the run off issues which caused the e coli contamination issues in Ca. Carrie Sue. The one that comes to mind is the when the Spinach crop was contaminated. Also with the advent of better and more frequent testing we've found that many of our drinking water tables are contaminated with pharmaceuticals which over time can effect the health of individuals.
13And I just realized how fitting my avatar is for this topic
Dysentery caused by bacteria
found in unsanitary drinking water!
14"And I just realized how fitting my avatar is for this topic"
15That's pretty ironic
...I actually thought you'd done that on purpose!
And thanks for the info, hypno, I really didn't know. I've lived in Iowa, MI as a child and now KY, and I don't think we've ever had problems with unclean water.
16There have been Cryptosporidiosis outbreaks in the U.S. from recreational water sources just last year. I don't remember if any deaths resulted, but the fact that even heavily chlorinated water can't prevent the parasite from inhabiting our water is pretty frightening.
17Nope, I've had it for a few days...it's from my favorite childhood computer game!
18There was a story on the news early this week about a town near coal mines, where the water comes out of the faucets grey and children have a variety of strange illnesses. Just because it hasn't affected me personally doesn't mean I don't care if it affects other people.
19sarah, I've also heard some pretty frightening things about the over-use of anti-bacterial soaps and what that is doing to our water systems from my immunology prof. Scary stuff.
20oregon trail.
When someone says "earthy" I just think "poo"
21I agree about antibiotics and antibacterials. I know a lot of people who run to antibiotics every time they get a cold and I strongly advise against that. By choice I haven't taken antibiotics with the exception of one serious bought with bronchitis. Our bodies need to engage these bacteria’s on their own terms so that that information/adaptation is passed along to our children. If we block that process we're all going to be even more susceptible.
22Good for you hypno....since antibiotics will not get rid of a cold.
Overuse of antibiotics and antibacterials just creates superbugs that are resistant to everything.
And em, do your ABC's or sing Happy Birthday to yourself while scrubbing away with plain soap and hot water. It's not necessarily the type of soap you're using, but the scrubbing action itself.
23Well, well, well.... looks like we've got ourself a Miss Smarty Pants, Sarah!

26Can you imagine if all those billions actually came back to the tax payer to stimulate the economy? Wow...
27Last year, we noticed a very strong chlorine taste to our water. After a couple weeks, of calling and asking if it was occuring everywhere, they finally sent someone out to test our water. Was there a problem? Absolutely! They told us that our water tested extremely high for chlorine and ammonia. That is not healthy drinking water, IMHO. I mean, ammonia and bleach make mustard gas, and I was drinking and bathing in the combination for 2 weeks.
28Also, Arlington's water was found to have traces of anti-depressants and anti-anxiety drugs. Drink this or give it to your kids overtime, there will be affects.
