Celebrities are no different than us common folk; they make mistakes, too. It's just that their mistakes are seen and heard around the world. While it's easy for us to simply apologize to the people we've hurt, celebrities have to make amends much more publicly. But what happens when you're not sorry for your actions even though others see them as mistakes?

This happened to Miley Cyrus when controversial pictures emerged of her making goofy faces with her friends. Some thought the pics were racially charged, but she claims the media was just picking on her. Though she did make a statement, it wasn't exactly apologetic. Yes, celebrities are role models for many of us, but should they have to publicly apologize if they don't think they've done anything wrong?

Yes, they're not special enough to not have to account for something they've done.
1duh ofcourse
2I voted no - if they don't think they've done anything wrong, they shouldn't apologize. It's just an empty statement.
However - public opinion may and should change if they don't apologize and do not think that their actions are worthy of statement. (for example, even if Miley does not think she was being racist, the fact is she did something that to many people represented racism. It would behoove her to be apologetic that she offended people, if not for what she'd actually done).
3Really, it's EASY for most people to apologize? I didn't realize I was so unique...
4Yes, celebs should apologize, but I'm going to say that Miley is a 15 year old child, and growing up in the public eye, she's going to make some big mistakes. That doesn't make it OK, but she simply isn't an adult, and may not see the error of her ways at the moment.
Extremely well said, Bodhar!
5Depending on what they did, yes...I'd vote to put their selfish "im better than the little people" asses in jail for most of the sh*t they get away with.
6They shouldn't HAVE to, but if they make a mistake they should feel obligated to deal with the reprecussions. I don't believe they should be exempt from normal people... because they are, in fact, human.
7I don't think people should pay so much attention to celebrities in the first place; they're normal people, so they're bound to make mistakes. If they are sorry, then they can publicly announce it if they'd like. However, we should allow them to live their lives and not have to account for their behavior to millions of people they do not know.
8I'm with honey.
9they should, even though its usually not authentic.
10Yes especially since there are people out there that look up to some of them as role models.Recognizing a mistake and apologizing for it certainly won't kill them. They get away with enough crap as it is....
11LoL, this reminds me of this whole Bale Out thing, lol. Um, they're regular people, they screw up, over react, do all this stuff. They can do what they want, but if they break the law, they need to pay for it just like anyone else. Just because their in the lime light and people make them their role models is just silly. People need to realize that celebrities or sports stars or whoever is are human beings, they WILL disappoint. Stop making these people your role models if you don't want to be let down. I'm my own role model no one else. Why? Because at least if I disappoint myself I can always pick myself up. Really, I wouldn't encourage my child to look up to anyone else. They should believe in themselves and what they want and is best for them. It's nice to use successful individuals as inspirations but nothing my in my opinion. It creates problems otherwise. "Let every man be respected as an individual and no man idolized."
12I don't think they are obligated to apologize for an action that they don't think was bad. What gets to me though is that usually you see private photos taken of a celebrity doing something, then it gets posted on the internet and then all of the sudden everyone thinks you need to apologize. Celebrities do have lives that don't revolve around the general public.
Let me tell you a story. In HS, I was "popular", had tons of friends, tons of parties, etc. I was not mother teresa. A teacher of mine went on MySpace, actually SIGNED UP to view my pictures and decided that she wanted to get me and specifically five of my other friends (and no one else in the picture) thrown out of school just before graduation (and not be able to graduate) because we were drinking. She was targeting us specifically, and only 6 of us (everyone in the pic was drinking and was in our school). Anyway, they did not throw us out of school because that was something we did on our OWN time, not on school time. I thought it was terrible that I had to act like I was a saint just in case someone decided to kick me out of school.
I think it's stupid to expect celebrities to be these great role models. I think we should show our children that people are human, they make mistakes, and no one is perfect. They shouldn't have to pretend to be this incredibly perfect all the time person.
13well, i don't like it when the "apology" comes from their publicist. tom hank's' recent apology to the mormon's (on his previous comments concerning their support of prop
comes to mind. it came off as insincere, and more of an additional insult.
and miley already got in trouble for a video making fun of some of the other young disney girls. so is another apology from her saying "you misunderstood me" any better?
it gets old to have they try and put a spin on something obvious, you know?
14Celebrities should do what they do: act, sing, dance, whatever - not be role models or spokespersons or whatever. They can do whatever the F they want to do, as long as they keep doing their job well. They're not politicians, they don't represent us, what they say and do is none of anybody's business but their own. Instead of berating them, we should just teach our children not to look up to STARS, which is not promoting any sort of good, interesting, intelligent, fulfilling value.
That's MY opinion.
15I said no because if they are going to actually take the time to address the media and apologize I expect it to be an honest apology or else they are just being hyprocritical!
16In general, I think that if you have offended a whole bunch of people, you usually have done something wrong. In the case of Miley, I have seen those pics and I found them offensive and I am white! To me, those pics are clearly racist, and it is her lack of maturity that does not allow her to understand how offensive it actually is. I would say that her parents should explain this to her, but perhaps that is where she developed these attitudes in the first place.
17I don't they should have to apologize. People make make mistakes and learn from them, it's just a fact of growing up. While it sucks they have to have outsiders know what they do, they shouldn't have to apologize.
18I think they should follow the same rules as everyone else. If you offend anyone, then yeah apologise. But if you're just goofing off and having fun then nah, theres no need to.
19Yes - we aplogize when we make a mistake..why should a celeb be any different?
20I don't think they should HAVE to apologize, I mean unless they personally hurt somebody or made a mistake then apologize to the person hurt or wronged. But to apologize to the general public, then no. Who are we to him, that he would feel the need to do so.
21They should be held to the same standards as us "common folks".
22I said no, because in the end if you think they're role models or your kids thing they're role models they someone needs to reconsider things. Who cares? People do stupid things and make mistakes and should you apologize for doing something stupid when no one was really hurt by it? She wasn't driving drunk, she didn't kill anyone, so who cares? I'm more irritated about Michael Phelps apologizing about smoking some pot, that was someone most people do why should he have to apologize for it? Just because he got caught?
23People should stop being so sensitive about stuff, she was just messing around. Yeah, she's stupid we all knew that.
I voted yes because they work hard to put themselves in the public eye and are "role models" to so many young people??
They need to behave accordingly!!
24I think they should. What bothered me about Miley's "apology" is that she didn't actually acknowledge her actions. Even if she did just think she was making faces and that the media was just picking on her, she could have at least said something like "I didn't realize at the time how offensive that gesture can be, and I apologize if anybody was offended by what I thought was innocent fun"
25oh please. as an asian that photo was HARDLY racist at all. you'd have to be pretty small minded conservative assho to find that offensive.
26They should only apologize if they mean it. I drives me nuts when a celebrity says or does something that obvouisly they mean, and then apoligize because they are getting pressure from the media or a publicist to do so. If they really feel they did wrong then apoligize, don't do it to make yourself look better.
27This Miley thing was ridiculous, but of course an apology is needed if they actually insult or hurt someone, like in the current Chris Brown/Rihanna thing... celebs need to take responsibility too.
28i say no because i'm sure there are tons of "fake" apologies floating around. they just apologize becaue that's what people want..i dont know about you but i'd rather have a sincere apology then one just to shut me up
29miley flashing evry body?that not ok.good role model my ....
