wow what a commercial!
1Im glad they refused to air it.
Really! An unwanted baby grew up to be Ted Bundy - wanna make an ad about that?!?!
2I think its a great commercial, but its their channel they can refuse any ad they want.
3Didnt they refuse the Peta ad too?
Though I wonder what is as offensive about seeing a baby on an ultrasound as half naked women making out with vegetables....
4The ad will probably be seen by just as many people now (through news outlets) AND they didn't have the spend the money. Look at the PETA ad! I have seen that thing a million times.
5NBC say the rejected it because they don't allow ads for political or advocacy issues. However it appears that NBC rejected Peta because of the sexuality, not because its a political organization.
6To say make it like that
7Given the whole Janet Jackson thing I would think NBC would be more touchy about sex than political adovocacy.
8UG.
To make it like that IS Obama in there is gross. Why couldn't they have said "he could grow up to be a president"? Like Steph said that baby could grow up to be a killer.
9Also to use his face on something that he would not agree to since he is pro-choice is something else.
you're right LilKimbo I have seen that ad everywhere...
10I don't think the ad implies at all that it's Obama.
11But, I do agree with the point about using his face when he wouldn't support it.
12"Also to use his face on something that he would not agree to since he is pro-choice is something else. "
Good point, Momma.
13I think thats one of the reasons why its so provacative and powerful (his face being on it).
14Nothing like getting ethical guidance from a t.v. ad.
15It's a good thing they included the link at the end, so the ad can whet the viewers' appetites and they can go to the website rather than getting ethical guidance from the ad itself.
16"Really! An unwanted baby grew up to be Ted Bundy - wanna make an ad about that?!?! "
17That's a powerful advertisement, for sure, but NBC has the right to reject anything the please.
18Absolutely, websites are the place to go for ethical guidance.
19Ugh. I'm glad they reject it. What is the ratio of unwanted babies with mothers that can barely support them and ones that actually became the US president? 9999999 to 1. Find another reason instead of this one, this is so unrealistic.
20Haus, yeah they refused the PETA ad.
21Certain detailed websites can definitely help with ethical guidance. They also have the ability to provide information regarding individuals one can seek out. Both the commercial and the website also have the ability to spark discussion. No one has said they should be used for guidance, including the organization itself.
22Well said, lilkimbo.
23This ad angered me. There are a lot of single parents who choose to keep their children They are struggling to raise them. They struggle to find affordable housing(that is safe)and affordable child care. They struggle to find time to be with their children as they have to work longer hours to make ends meet. Where is the focus on the children that are already here.
24lilblu, not every ad can address every single issue on the table, that's just not realistic.
25I was thinking the same thing, chat.
26I would hope maybe they would use that 1.5 million to fund programs for children today liliblu. But I'm not going to hold my breath.
27I think they could use that $1.5 million for something much better than a commercial.
28More people will see it on the web than they would on tv.
"lilblu, not every ad can address every single issue on the table, that's just not realistic. "
Why do they need to spend $1.5 million on an ad? There is no need for there to an about anything I wrote about.
29lilblu, I've read your comment about ten times, and I'm just not getting it. Are there some words missing?
30great ad! The truth hurts
31Awesome ad, that is the same thing i am thinking. And you can't say this is a bad ad because what about the kids that are already here. It is a good ad. It makes you thinks twice before aborting a baby. The truth hurts, doesn't it!!!
32It is a useless ad because it contributes nothing irrefutable to the discussion.
33Yes, an unwanted child could grow up to be president. But many unwanted children have grown up to be criminals, including serial killers. So, it can make you think twice before keeping a baby.
It's a silly emotional ploy, a recycling of the old 'OMG you would have aborted Beethoven' argument.
I agree, more people will see the ad on the Internet than they will on television.
I don’t have a problem with the ad. I mean it is true that one parent CAN do the job of two and raise an intelligent and very powerful child.
.
Parents that like to tell their children that they *CAN’T* do this or that because of their race, they *CAN’T* because of their gender, they *CAN’T* because of the harsh neighborhood they live in, they *CAN’T* go to college because they themselves as the parent didn’t, and they *CAN’T* do much of anything in life because they only have one parent around......are the single parents that most likely have unsuccessful children or they raise criminals.
.
You cannot tell your children that they CAN’T in life. If so, then soon the child will honestly believe that their life is worthless. They need good self esteem and reminders here and there that it’s ok to be different.
Parents, just like children, have to know that times can be rough, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t make a large difference not only in their life, but in millions of other people’s lives as well. Children need confidence, nurturing, and education. They all need to be told that they ARE somebody in life. If a parent will not tell them then teachers, counselors, and other mentors need too.
34.
And many people as adults have turned their life around because a stranger out of nowhere gave them a good talking too, letting them know that they don’t have to go down the wrong road anymore. They need to stop their wrongs and do the right thing. Again, sometimes a stranger can help to change a child’s life.
.
So for President Obama to say that a child of a single parent can be the most powerful man in the country is not just talking....it’s honestly a fact.
"The truth hurts, doesn't it!!! "
what exactly is that truth Hainan?
That you can abort a baby that would have been the president? That a single mother can raise a child right?
35what? I dont understand why you said that.
People born into good families have the chance of being killers, should we just kill all babies to make sure no one bad ever happens? Or are we so cynical that we don't see the value in a giving a child a chance to live a life?
Some might find the choice to let someone live or die to be silly, but I don't think it is.
36Well Haus it's wrong to kill them after they're actually murderers, so it's only logical to nip it in the bud whenever possible.
37Same thing Steph said..we're not saying that they should all die.
38The "he could have been..." excuse is lame. Its pointless.
Stephley, it isn't petulant. It's a valid argument, and your constant dismissal of any valid argument makes anyone who watches how you comment really question your debate style and whether there's any logical backing whatsoever for any of your points.
39At least NBC has half a brain.
40"CatholicVote was ready to spend $1.5 million to air it during Super Bowl."
41what a stupid way to spend $1.5 mil.
i agree with steph
or try to spend $1.5 mil since nbc rejected it.
42chaton, sorry I'm late in answering your question (dinner was ready). But, what I was saying in my last post was that I don't think that $1.5 million should be wasted on this ad. Nor is there a need to make an ad about struggling families by this group. If they have that much money to spend, use it help people who are already here. Use the money to provide affordable day care. Use it to help with rental assistance. But don't waste the money on an ad that is preaching to the choir.
43"Well Haus it's wrong to kill them after they're actually murderers, so it's only logical to nip it in the bud whenever possible."
Haha, nice!
44Stephley, it isn't petulant. It's a valid argument, and your constant dismissal of any valid argument makes anyone who watches how you comment really question your debate style and whether there's any logical backing whatsoever for any of your points
I completely disagree with your comment. Sure, Steph might be unapologetic for the stance she takes on most issues - but what's the big deal? She has always given well thought-out and researched responses. Obviously your opinions don't align with Steph's, but to suggest that her debate style has no logical backing? That's silly!
45"She has always given well thought-out and researched responses."
I like that one too!
46"But don't waste the money on an ad that is preaching to the choir. "
47You all are missing the point. They aren't trying to convince avid supporters of abortion to change their minds. They are doing God's work. Trying to prevent another murder from happening. There may be a lot of women out there who are really conflicted about having an abortion. They think because they are single or what ever the excuse may be, that they need to just do away with it because like many of you have said in other abortion post, that if you can't give it a good life you should just abort the baby. This ad will make her think twice about it, because even if you don't have money, you can give that child a valuable life, money isn't everything. although many of you have said previously that "who are we to judge a women" this is God's work and telling that women that they do have another option. there are many, many charities run by the catholic churches and other churches. You just have to be a part of that church to know about them. If you want to lead a Godless life, why should the catholic spend that money on you?
catholicvote spend that money on you?
48Hain most women could care less about a tv ad when deciding whether or not they will have an abortion.
49"Most women could care less about a tv ad when deciding whether or not they will have an abortion."
Exactly. If you are already considering abortion, chances are you are pro choice. A silly ad saying your unborn fetus could grow up to be president isn't going to change that mindset. It isn't going to be a "Eureka!" moment that is going to make a desperate woman suddenly want to keep her baby.
It isn't going to convert pro choice advocates. Abortion is just an issue people feel too strongly about either way to be swayed. No ad is going to be moving enough to do that.
How many people have felt different about abortion after participating in Citizen discussions? How many pro choice people have seen fetus pictures posted online by the pro lifers and thought, "well, gee, now that I've seen a picture of a fetus, I feel differently about this whole abortion issue"? How many pro life people have analyzed statistics offered by pro choicers and thought, "you know, after reviewing those numbers, I really don't think it is murder after all"?
I'm sorry but this ad is just a waste of time, money and resources that would have been better spent trying to help struggling single mothers buy formula for their babies or something. They could have put this money into sex ed programs to help prevent these unwanted pregnancies in the first place. Instead of trying to preach during the Superbowl, Catholic vote should have been putting their money where their mouths are.
