The US Post Office delivered a plea to Congress yesterday — please don't make us deliver mail six days a week. If you consider the last time you wrote someone a letter versus an email, you can understand why the post office is having a hard time meeting rising costs. In fact, last year the post office was $2.8 billion in the red.
Considering the tough times, the Postmaster General would like the flexibility to shift to five-day delivery. While I'm sure mail carriers who work on the weekend hope Saturday delivery would be the first to go, it's more likely that a slow mail day, like Tuesday, will be cut first.
Are you surprised the post office is asking for a day off and not a bailout?

Missoni
No. I was a mail carrier when I turned 18 back in 1989, And even then there was talk of reducing delivery service to 5 days a week. But the government asked the USPS not to do that.
However I remember the Mail Carriers union being all for it and the postmasters being for it. So if the USPS wants it and the government wants it then this could finally be done.
But heck my mail carrier only delivers my mail when s/he feels like it. If s/he feels that whatever the mail coming to our building is important enough then they show up otherwise our whole building can go for weeks without a single delivery then one day your mailbox is full and all the bills and letters are 3 weeks late.
1Wackdoodle that's insane. Have you filed a complaint with the Post Office Master?
2Yes. And they truly don't care. After each complaint we get mail for about 5 straight days then back to three weeks and the mail carrier never set foot in our lobby unless it's to use the bathroom or eat lunch.
I'm finally just getting a PO Box. I'm tried of getting magazines that have been read already, even the ones that come sealed in plastic.
3that's crazy about the mail. could they do 2 half days? like work half tuesdays and half saturdays? that way if really important mail needs to get through it can?
4Wackdoodle, that is awful. My father complained about not getting his Dallas Cowboy Weekly after two issues didn't arrive. After the complaint there was never a late delivery.
5Wow doodle thats wack..
no seriously I'd be super pissed.
I actually feel real bad for the mail carriers out here. They have to walk up and down hills in the freezing cold sometimes. They deserve a break IMO.
6Wackdoodle you can write or call the post office's consumer advocate if the post office master can not help you.
7I'm glad they're thinking about cutting a day. I usually only check my mail once every few days anyway, and they work hard & need a break!
8wack - that's insane. And quite possibly illegal. Tampering with mail is a federal offense, so why wouldn't delay of mail be some kind of offense? Then again, I could just be reaching there.
9As far as reducing days goes, it doesn't bother me. I only get mail a few days a week as it is now.
The post office is a serious mess right now. Someone at my office said we received over 900 pieces of mail that were not for our address last year! Packages go missing, certified letters aren't scanned. It is just a big old mess. I would be fine with one less mail day, but I think they are going to need to raise their prices. If it costs more to send a letter than what they are charging, they are always going to be in the red and the difference will come out of all tax payers money, not just the ones that are using the service.
Even if it cost $.50 to send a simple envelope, I think people would pay it.
10Cutting out another day is fine, as long as it isn't Saturday.
11My dad's a clerk at the post office, should be interesting to see what he has to say.
I can see this working. "Important" mail will still get delivered, IF it's next day priority (express?) mail. That category gets delivered 365 days a year, including Christmas and other federal holidays. It's the only one that does.
I think it's Tuesday's that most of the junk mail gets delivered -- probably why they picked Tuesday.
The thing to remember about carriers now is that they are under VERY strict deadlines. They are being pushed to deliver routes faster and faster, unfortunately at the cost of quality of service. They don't have to take any outgoing mail from your mailbox, they just have to shove that day's mail into the box. They don't even deliver to you, they deliver to the address.
Wackadoodle, keep complaining. If that doesn't work, keep going up the chain -- ask for the regional manager, etc. There is no reason why you would be going weeks without delivery. Days, maybe, if there's nothing to deliver, but never weeks.
12I only check my mail twice a week anyway. Most people that want to contact you in a hurry either call you, text you, or simply email you. It's a heck of alot faster and cheaper. The prices of faster shipping has gone up too much in my opinion too.
13Individuals may not use mail, but my business uses it extensively (to the tune of three semi-loads per day at corporate headquarters). If they feel they must cut a day, then make it Saturday.
14Since most businesses work Monday through Friday, I don't see how the Post Office could cut Tuesday even if it is the slowest day of the week.
15This would seriously disrupt my netflix schedule.
16Jillness, legally the post office can only raise postage at a certain rate. It goes up in March or May I think and this time is limited to 2 cents.
17So weird, I saw an article about this yesterday, but before that, completely randomly, I was talking about this, saying I wish I could tell the mailman I only need mail two or three times a week so he could skip my house and get his job done quicker (it was snowing). I would be fine with cutting residential mail service down by one or more days. If you need mail every day, you could get a PO Box and they could do that on the same schedule as now.
Ack! TidalWave I didn't even think about my Netflix schedule. Nevermind... the post office can't cut back.

19I can't seem to figure out how to put blank lines between my paragraphs...? LOL
20I don't care if they cut back, I don't think 1 day is going to kill people. Especially if they are cutting residential delivery only.
And if makes mail more reliable I am all for it.
21If that's what they need to do in order to stop hemorrhaging money then I think people and businesses will adjust.
22Oh my, I'm impatient enough as is with my online shopping, this shortening of mail days just might send me over the edge.
23I'm also not okay with what this would do to my Netflix delivery.
24This seems like a great idea. I don't need my daily delivery of junk mail. I like the idea of reducing delivery for residential areas and leaving businesses as is. I have lots of stuff delivered to my work as it is. If I really needed it, or even if I just wanted my Netflix, I could have it sent to my job.
Jessie, don't most online shopping purchases come via ups or fedex anyways?
25Meh. My comment got ate. But I was going to add this seems like a good chance for private companies to jump in and fill any gaps it might leave. I'd think conservatives would be happy about that!
26I wouldn't care if they stopped delivering on Saturdays, but I hope they still plan to be open to buy stamps and at least get postage on boxes you want to ship.
27I think it's a great idea as well. Considering email and online bill pay, there's not as much important stuff that goes through the mail anyway. I think 4 days out of the week, all I personally receive is junk mail and solitications. I wouldn't miss those.
28I shop a lot with smaller online stores and ebay. Also if I have the option I often choose USPS, unless it's more expensive, because I know I won't have to miss out on Saturdays cause UPS doesn't have normal delivery on the weekend.

30I'm mainly b*tching though TS, they should do what they need to do to stay afloat.
31Ahhh commenting is turning into a nightmare for me.
TS I'm mainly whining though. I do believe the post office should do what it needs to do to stay a float. One day isn't the end of the world.
32Ugh, this needs to be done. I think it would be an awkward flow for people to work M/W/Th/F/S, though.
33If this only affects residential, I really don't care what day they cut.
Now if I could only get my hubby to agree to online bill pay, I wouldn't care if they cut more days.
34Break his arm, that way he can't write checks. Then you can show him what a great alternative epay is...
35Er...is that how Mrs. Dave converted you to online bill pay, Dave?
36netflix! noooo!
37Most postal workers around here are over paid compared to the other people in my town, maybe if they didn't make 20 dollars an hour the post office could survive.
38I'm down with a 5 day delivery schedule, but Tuesday off? I would hate to have Sunday off, go to work Monday and have Tuesday off.
39I only get mail three days a week anyway. I could live with it. Cut anyday, I don't care. I am not in a rush to get useless catalogs or Gerber life mailings.
40Jude - That's how I converted Mrs Dave to bill pay. Fortunately, being as she's a pastor, she forgave me quickly.
41That's what you think now...
42As far as online shopping goes, most companies use UPS and FedEx now. I very rarely receive anything by USPS anymore with the exception of my book club books.
43-
Dave, you better be careful. She'll get you in your sleep.
I really don't care if they cut out a day. If that's what they need to do, then they should do it.
44I don't think whether or not postal workers want a split weekend should be a deciding factor. Lots of jobs don't have two days off in a row.
45Cutting a day is fine, but it would only make sense if it was Saturday.
46No...I'm always soo sad on Sunday when I don't get mail. I can't handle another day
47Evil grammar police say: It's "You (Haven't) Got Mail".
48It is a dying industry so a bail out would be a foolish waste of money. I mail only one bill a month and if there were a way to pay it online, I would.
I do love receiving my packages and my magazines but one less day won't kill me.
