Since W the movie failed to figure out George W. Bush, a psychiatrist who's studied him is giving it a go. Justin Frank, MD, the author of Bush on the Couch: Inside the Mind of the President, says President Bush is not Dick Cheney's puppet nor is he a well-intentioned fool in over his head but a sadist who will revel in watching the world clean up his mess from his Crawford couch.

Dr. Frank believes the mess Bush has left is the result of giving a destructive personality extraordinary power. He shrinks Bush down to a wounded child, a boy who enjoyed killing frogs who grew into a man — to steal a phrase from everyone's favorite VP candidate — hellbent (unconsciously) on destroying the world. To see what he said, read more.
For Bush, the roots of his bad-boy sadism run deep. As a young boy, he identified with his harsh and often cruel mother (ed., Barbara!), whose inability to provide necessary maternal early nurturing culminated in her withdrawal after George’s young sister’s illness and untimely death. He was a ruthlessly teased, learning-disabled little boy who was criticized by teachers for not being able to keep up in class. And he was left behind by an emotionally distant father who reinforced the message from his mother that it was pathetic for a 7-year-old to show grief about his sister’s death. All of these factors contributed to an unrelenting self-hatred that made him feel weak and ashamed, things he tried to deny by posing as superior, exploiting weakness in others and becoming a bully.
Yesterday we heard President Bush defend his accomplishments (depending on how you look at it) and admit his mistakes at his last press conference. He was charming — but aren't all sociopaths? — and appeared sincere, giving the impression that he never meant to do anything but his job well.
So, who's crazy now?

1Wow. All I can say is....wow.
2No, that's harsh. I think he was well-intentioned, just in over his head.
3Psychologically it's all possible, but so are a lot of other things -it's not a good idea to pay attention to these things.
4Ummmm yeah...harsh.
5Uhh, is this for real? I thought I was on wonkette for a minute there...
6geez that's harsh. I didn't like his presidency but come on....
7Sheesh... I just read the actual article and it's so black & white. I love this comment by penscott:
What arrant quackery! Does Justin Frank not understand that it is unethical to publish a psychological evaluation of someone he has never had the opportunity to meet and spend extensive time with?
8Harsh is right. Sheesh.
9Between W and Frank, I think Frank's a lot meaner.
10I am so tired of everyone's problems being blamed on poor upbringings. Whether the allegations are true or not, what about a little personal responsibility?
11I HATE George W, but sadist? He's so happy and clueless. I don't think he would even know how to destroy the world and if he did this would be a sneaky way of doing it
12I agree Clarabelle, a little personal responsibility from Bush would be great!
13I wonder why the book is getting attention now. It was published several years ago.
14That's horrible. I really believe he thought he was doing the right thing when he made all of the decisions he made. Maybe some people just aren't supposed to be Presidents and that's his problem, not some unconscious sadism.
15I am so not a bush fan but i just don't agree with this man at all, has he met bush, talked to him, studied him, does he know him????????? I want to know how much he got paid to say that.....
16I second the comment amy posted. I mean, really, what respectable psychiatrist evaluates a patient he has never met?
17I can only think of two reasons:
1) Trying to make a name for yourself, or
2) Trying to sell a book.
(or a possible 3rd, both)
18I'm not going to knock Franks assessment. But I also don't wholely agree because, as others have said, this is a theory based solely on hearsay, second-hand knowledge, visual feedback and clearly self-opinion.
19I'm no fan of Bush but I like others am not going to accept a diagnosis given by a doctor who has never had a session with the patient. If he had been "hellbent on destruction" he could have done a lot more damage with the power he had.
20In all reality, most of it boils down to who the sitting president chooses to listen to. They have advisors for everything, so while Bushie Boy has to take responsibility for choosing his cabinet, his cabinet is as much to blame for the current issues as he is. This whole mess started a long time ago, a LONG time ago. To say that this is all Bush's fault is silly, but it's also not Clinton's fault. It's a culmination of all things. Most of it being Greed on the part of the US citizens (Referring to the economy). I read a comment earlier that really laid it out neatly. In essence, what the poster said was "What goes up, must come down." No one and nothing stays on top forever. It may get BACK to the top, but at some point it falls. The leaders and powers that be will be determining factors in how FAR it falls, but it will fall. We'll pull out of this, but some hard decisions, some unpopular decisions, will have to be made by the incoming administration to make it happen. If not, it's going to get worse.
21This diagnosis is about as clinically sound as a "body language expert" deciphering the subtleties of the Brangelina relationship based on a picture of them holding hands as they walk into an awards ceremony. But I imagine Frank made a tidy profit.
22"This diagnosis is about as clinically sound as a "body language expert" deciphering the subtleties of the Brangelina relationship based on a picture of them holding hands as they walk into an awards ceremony."
Articles about "body language experts" always crack me up.
"Her eyes are partially closed in this photo indicating that she is often suspicious about her husbands fidelity. His arm is angled away from her, indicating that he might stray."
Seriously, how does one even become a "body language expert"?
23hahahahahahahahaha!
He's just not savvy enough to be a sadist! Cheney, maybe, Bush, no. And I am by no means a fan. Fool all the way.
24Fascinating. I don't know much about his childhood or how his parents raised him, but it's an interesting perspective.
25I agree with the guy. Bush is a sicko. Live in denial about it all you wish people. I see clearly that he's a mean guy.
26Oh my word. I honestly laughed at this. He's never even met the man, is he like... projecting? wtf.
27I don't see him as mean or sadistic. I think he's stupid, ignorant, and unreasonable, and has the worst case of tunnel vision in the history of humanity. I just don't think he has the intelligence to orchestrate the kind of sneakiness this article implies. And frankly, that's more dangerous than him being a sociopath.
28I know that Jeb was the favored and lost his sister, and apparently is scared of his mother. But i don't imagine Bush being a sadist.
29lilkimbo dr. phil sire thinks he can (a la britney spears)
30I CAN see sadist - I can't think of another American politician who seemed to relish the death penalty as Bush does. During his six years as governor of Texas, Mr Bush commuted one death sentence and allowed more than 150 executions to go ahead, more than any other state. And in an article about him, Tucker Carlson recalled Bush mocking one inmate.
31We kill murderers in our state. It's not sadism. It's justice.
32Stick to that line Org.
33And Sugar, surely you can find a different pic of Bush than the one you used in a previous post. The one that portrays Bush in the worst light possible. Trying to make him look like a foll. No bias here, none.
34Wow, interesting interpretation. We'll never really know.
This reminds me of when people were analyzing Jessica Simpson. "She's not really a dumb blonde! She's actually a secret genius pretending to be ditzy!"
One more thing, fool and sadist is not completely seperate. Fools can be extremely cruel because they are too naive to understand empathy and the consequences of their actions. Children torturing animals is one example.
35Geez, she used a variety of pictures from yesterday's news conference, which many people feel put a number of facets of Bush's personality on display - Citizen's not to blame if he looks silly to you in some of them.
36Sadist certainly came to mind observing Bush's response and reaction during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, but I think Lukin really tapped into or delineated Bush's most prominent personality traits.
37A kid who kills animals is not going to turn out well and that is well known.
38Ask your aquaintances how many ants they burned, insects they delimbed and "played with" as kids. Insect torture is considered a habit of children. It's sadly hella common whether you find ask personally or search the internet. Yes, insect torture is animal torture, it demonstrates an disregard for other living beings. There numerous other examples of general childhood or youth behavior that further supports a link between ignorance and cruelty. Little kids do awful things until their parents scold them, they are taught better, socialized, or develop a set of moral standards. It's called maturity. I'm not sure what your point was. That there is no connection between foolishness and cruelty? So any kid who beat up another kid is not going to turn out well?
39animals = mammals as humans = mammals ~ frogs are mammals.
ants, flies, mosquitoes = insects
Interesting you think killing a fly, mosquito or "ant" is in the same category as killing a frog. Mosquitoes and flies were meant to die!! Frogs are sometimes pets. But perhaps I could help clarify. I consider my own sons pretty healthy but they too kill animals, however they do it while hunting and fishing. I believe the difference lies when a boy kills animals for the sheer joy of watching them die. I can certainly see Bush doing that, and unfortunately we have all watched many men die since he's been in office ~ whether its our soldiers serving in the wrong war, people dying of thirst and exposure in the aftermath of a disaster, or the death of our retirement plans.
40Oh, and I'm aware a fish is not an animal ~ A fish is a fish, of course
I guess people [I] shouldn't be allowed to write on these threads after 1:30 in the morning!
41Do we have any evidence that Bush "enjoyed killing frogs?" I can't find anything about it anywhere.
42http://www.dailykos.com/story/2004/8/2/234323/2134
there are a few others just google it up.
43It got flagged..google bush killed frogs. something will pop up!
44He used to stick firecrackers in them and watch them blow up. nice.
45Daily Kos and Democratic Underground came up, which are the same sites I saw before. I guess I should have clarified, I was looking for a credible source.
46The New York Times didn't up?
47Not on the first two pages. I didn't look past that.
48interesting...I actually read that Bush and his mother had a great relationship, that after his sister died Bush took it upon himself to cheer his mother up, making jokes, being silly anything he could do to make her laugh. It's sort of what made him who his today...goofy.
As for blowing-up frogs, I think most 7 or 8 year old boys would find some amusement in that if left unsupervised. It is true that many children experiment on insects and other types of disregarded animals, insects, amphibians or whatever. I mean seriously by the time a kid is 7 how many bugs have they seen you kill without remorse? It is considered a problem when a kid tortures pets or small animals.
I can't stand Bush's politics, but I think calling him a sadist is more than a stretch, it's an attempt of a nobody to become a somebody. I think Bush is plain and simple, and idiot, with idiot advisors.
49wow
