When the new season of 24 kicked off last night, hero Jack Bauer was the subject of a congressional investigation looking into his hasty executions and use of torture. The Telegraph quotes Bauer, who said:
We've done so many things in the name of protecting this country, we've created two worlds. Ours and the people's we've promised to protect. They deserve to hear the truth and decide how far they want to let us go.
Bauer's sharp turn left is now torturing conservatives, who appreciated 24 as a beacon of Hollywood hope in a sea of liberal films, actors, and TV shows. Vocal conservatives say that before Obama, the show took seriously the threat of terrorism, along with the necessity of using extreme measures to protect innocent Americans.
Do you think the show is kowtowing to liberal bullies, or is the plot just trying to stay relevant?

Why would taking a different and more thoughtful direction to the theme of the shoe have to be considered as "kowtowing to liberal bullies"? That's just silly. As is taking any fictional TV show so seriously.
1I dont watch the show but I agree with what Jude said.
2I don't watch the show either. I don't think they are kow-towing to any one thing except ratings. They are jumping on the band wagon is all.
3Who cares?!?! Seriously!
Bush gave his last press conference today and that came with so much information and quotes to pour over and we get Jack f'n Bauer?
Seriously???
4I saw 24- and frankly it still is as conservative as the previous episodes. Strange that one quote would make it left-leaning.
5I truthfully have no idea how that show lasted as long as it has. The whole first season was like a 24 hour day, the premise of the show... It has skewed from that. I don't know, just a weird show.
6I always get annoyed at people who just post to complain on a website so I'll try to keep this brief but am I the only one who is noticing how light the stories on Citizen have been lately?
Is the Sugar network just trying to get rid of the Citizen aspect altogether?
7I hope not, Haus, but it does seem like there's less to chew on here lately
Going back to 24, fiction should anyway not be limited by ideology. That just turns it into insincere propaganda.
8"Do you think the show is kowtowing to liberal bullies, or is the plot just trying to stay relevant?"
Couldn't it be both?
9I agree Haus. There are so many news stories, yet none get posted on here. We have to post them ourselves in other sugar arenas.
10I watched 24 last night and actually I had never watched it before, but I doubt Mr. Bauer took what he was saying to heart since about 2 scenes later he was ready to stab someone in the eyeball with a Bic to get some info!
11yes I have noticed that too...
12Less to chew on? What?! You don't appreciate repeat posts each day/week?!
13Ouch haus! Thanks for that mental picture!
14You'd have to threaten my family with more than a bic to get me to watch 24. yech.
15I never jumped on the 24 bandwagon, but I sincerely doubt that such a quote will change the nature of Jack Bauer.
As for Citizen, leftovers get old...REAL fast.
16I love 24. Always have. But it's a fictional show. I don't assign any more meaning to it than that.
17I don't even understand what's the problem. Someone please explain it to me.
18hey I love 24 to the point of being obsessed with it and I'm a liberally incline so this whole is a bunch of bs in IMHO
19The best ep of 24 was the South Park spoof on it!
20UH.... blasphemy haus... just blasphemy.
Now I need to go pray to the gods of 24 to beg forgiveness for you.
21I watched the show, and they did open it up a little bit with the quote above, but Jack also said that he did not regret what he had done. The show is about the serious nature of fighting terrorism and some of the sacrifices that have to be made, but it has always showed the moral problems that go along with certain decisions as well.
It's just a tv show, and people shouldn't watch it if they don't like what's portrayed. Personally, I will still be watching for now.
22No matter which "direction" they are leaning towards, once a show goes so far in one direction, they HAVE to go back the other way. They lose audiences if they get so extreme that it becomes absurd...which I think "24" has already past that mark.
23That quote was more of a self-commentary by Jack Bauer on his own actions than about politics as a whole. It's never been about the politics as much as it has been about making decisions in the heat of the moment, and about the actions of one man.
24despite what people think the show is- I love it. It's tv- and it is can be extreme and implausible at times but is the show and that is the point!
25I didn't plan on watching this season of 24 because I figured it would be played out, but I've got to say that the first 15 minute segment had me reeling. However, it's just entertainment for me. I don't want to read much into it. Except maybe that Tony Almeida is back and sexier than ever.
26The farther we get away from 9/11 the less seriously we take terrorism. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing. I think at first we overcompensated for what happened and I think we've reached a point where we're far enough away from what happened to see it clearly. Then we will reach a point where we are too far away and won't take the threat seriously enough. I don't think it's Obama that changed the show's views on terrorism. It's time
27I agree with Jude, SHOES should be thoughtfully considered!
28For chewing?
29The theme of the shoe anyway.
30I gave up shoe chewing as a resolution this new years. I miss it.
31Ohh, I just realized...
I meant "theme of the show" way up top.
32GS, slippers are more fun to chew anyway.
33I prefer chewing food. But if shoes are your thing....who am I to judge?
34Excellent source of protein
35sugaryamy I'm so glad Tony's back. Even if he's gone bad.
36I never watched 24. I heard it was addictive and the last thing I need is to be addicted to another crappy TV show. Isn't it bad enough that I can't miss an episode of GG or Lost?
That being said, I don't think they are going to change the ideology behind 24 at this stage in the game. What they've been doing has been working so far hasn't it?
37My addiction is LOST, and I cannot afford another.
38But even though 24 is a tv show, entertainment, it is a huge reflection of our times. When a show like this shifts its ideology, even if it is only a perception of a shift, it is politically meaningful, even if just for analysis and discussion.
And I do believe it could be kowtowing, i.e,. jumping on the bandwagon.
24 KICKED MAJOR A** tonight. 2 wonderful hours of Jack Bauer and yay! Tony isn't didn't turn completely dirty
