Emily Post pretty much set the bar for manners, and last week when I quoted one of her echoes of traditional etiquette, most of you agreed with her and like it when a man walks on the curbside.
Below is one example of what Emily calls "Today's Rudest Behaviors" in her book Etiquette. Now I must admit to being guilty of this from time to time, but I agree with Emily, it's not the most charming way to behave in public.
"Using four-letter words and other obscenities in public without any reservations — especially in the presence of children."
Do you watch your mouth amongst strangers or do you have a potty mouth like me?

I don't generally curse a whole lot anymore but sometimes stuff just slips out. I'm not very loud though so I'm pretty sure most people don't hear it. I really really despise when people curse loudly. Very rude.
1Im a total b*tch.
I can control it when im in front of kids though obviously!
But if someone is pissing me off and I dont have my kids with me I say sh*t that my ma would not be proud of!
2I *really* hate swearing in public and think it's sort of offensive, but maybe that's because I live in NYC and I'm tired of hearing the f-word every 5 minutes! I try not to but if I hurt myself on the subway I'll probably curse. I think it's a bad idea in general though especially because kids are always around.
3This should really be my new year's resolution - I swear without even realizing it!
I am working on it though!
4Things slip out here and there. Especially when people piss me off
5When I'm pissed off, there's no controlling the curse words that come out but apart from that I try to control myself. When I was in high school, I cursed way too much.
6I actually try to to curse in public, I find it really tacky. I am not opposed to giving someone the finger though
I am sure my cursing behavior will increase when I move to NYC this summer though.
7Kinda don't really like hearing women cuss/curse. I guess it's just that I think women are these perfect clean creatures and I find these words as dirty -_-. Trying to dim down on teh cussin myself, though I try never to do it in public, especially in front of children, but hey sh*t happens, lol.
8I HATE when people curse with no mind to who's around them. I just think it's inappropriate to be using the f-word every 5 seconds with a 3 year old beside you.
9I'm not at all a fan of cursing in public. I especially hate it when I'm at a restaurant or something and the people at the next table are letting the f bomb fly at the top of their lungs. Rude, tacky, and classless.
10The only time I'm guilty of letting the words fly is in the car... then I'm terrible!
11I make it a point not to swear at all. There are other ways of verbally expressing my frustration or displeasure without resorting to salty language.
12sh*t happens.
13Sometimes stuff slips out, but I'm careful around children.
14It happens sometimes...ya know.
15I tyr not to cuss, but everyone does. I do realize it when I do tho. I'm not really a potty mouth. I hate when I hear women screaming, and saying nasty sh*t, in public. Its soo gross.
16I do, but I can't help it. However whenever I see a child around I won't especially since I work with kids so I always have to watch my language at work so it's habit when they're around.
17I think it's utterly stupid to give some words more power than others. f*ck DAMN sh*t ASS whatever... they are just words... But then it makes language more colorful haha. Since we connote such a strong emotional response to these works they should be reserved for usage only in such cases where strong emotion is elicited. Don't just say f*ck for the Hell of it.
18I could care less if people swear in public. Everyone does it. It can be a little scary when someone is angry and swearing, but if someone is having a casual conversation and says something like "so and so looked f#$%ing gorgeous yesterday" or something.. then, who cares? Don't listen to that person's conversation.
19I wouldn't in front of children or old people but other than that it really doesn't bother me at all. Kind of like ThePerfectScore, I don't really see the point of assigning some words with all this extra emotional baggage.
20I said, I make it a point not to swear in public. And I don't swear much when I'm not in public either.
I agree with the PerfectScore and macchiatolove, why do some words mean more than others? It's kind of weird actually.
Ok, first a disclaimer: I don't swear much at all. I only will when I'm very upset and around people I'm very close to, so of course not around kids.
21With that said: I don't quite understand the big deal about cursing around kids...Like I said above, why do we assign such strong meanings to particular words? It's just strange. And look at all of us, mostly all of us said we do curse at least sometimes. And I bet all the adults around us when we were kids tried not to curse. I don't think it really makes a difference, kids will hear it somewhere even if it's not from parents and other adults.
I don't understand why adults teach kids about a life that is so different from the real life people live once they grow up. If most of us are going to curse anyway when we grow up, or at least encounter cursing, why hide that from kids and pretend it doesn't happen?
I try not to swear but that's because I don't want to for my own benefit not because of anyone else. It's not my job to make sure someone else's kid learns manners, so I don't care if your kid hears me saw the f word or whatever. Eh.
22i swear a lot. I try to restrain it, but i often slip in front of the little kids that I'm not generally mindful to look for. lol
23I don't like swearing, in general. I don't like vulgar language, and I certainly don't want any coming out of my lips.
However, with that said, I do occasionally slip, especially when I'm frustrated. It's always been in private. Sometimes I was alone.
24i curse like a sailor ... it's a problem. i've probably offended a few people much like yourselves in the process, but i've always had a bad habit of enjoying stepping on other people's toes. i can be immature. i'm not irrational though, if i see a kid anywhere near me i always keep my language in check -- around my family as well.
25I am really good about biting my tongue around my Godkids and typically in public too
26I tend to run my mouth when I hurt myself of really need to stress something, like when I'm complaining about the weather or how tired I am. I tend to use the dookie word a lot though, instead of saying "you're kidding me" it's "you are s******g me!"
27a few years ago, i was talking to some friends and a few swear words happened to came out at random points in our conversation. i didnt realize until a lot later that a young child had been behind us the entire time. i felt so bad that i stopped swearing all together after that.
28I very very rarely curse, only when I'm behind the wheel. In fact many guys I've asked agreed that cursing is very unattractive in women. My bff has a potty mouth and is also super loud so sometimes it's embarrassing to go out with her and have her throw F-bombs all over the place while there are families around.
29I do swear a lot, it happened once i started working. I barely swore at all through out high school. Now I try to be mindful of children, but I really doubt it matters much, that's just respect for their parents more than anything else. I tend to really go off when some one doesn't do something when it costs them absolutely nothing to do it (I once swore at a bus driver who wouldn't open the doors for me while sitting at a red light when I was about two seconds late to the bus stop.) not proud of it, but not particularly ashamed either.
30I swear a lot, but I'm pretty good about censoring myself in the situations that call for it. Sometimes things slip, but not often.
31I don't like swearing in public, but when I was waiting in the airport security line, totally stressed out, and my brand new macbook fell from the trolley and smashed on the ground, I couldn't help it! I didn't care about what anyone thought of me either. Luckily my laptop wasn't hurt! Phew...
32Btw...thank goodness I can still see my diamond status on DearSugar. You know how hard I worked for that Sugar?! Please don't take it away from me
33I try not to, but it slips sometimes. And I try to be especially mindful around kids.
My mom has a great story about my first curse word at age 3. She said she was coming down the hall and she heard a crash. She said she started to come running to see what I had done. I had pulled something down off a dresser and was just standing in the middle of the floor with my hands on my hips going, "Well, damn it". My mom said she just laughed but realized I listened a heck of a lot more than she thought!
34Being ex-navy... there's a reason they call it "Swear like a sailor".
I control it
when I'm at work, because I tend to work closely with clients, but the second I clock out, it comes tumbling out like I'm playing catch up for the 8 hours I behaved.
35True story: My husband lost out at being the best man at a friend's wedding because he swears too much and might accidentally swear at the 200 person wedding.
36Only when I'm driving. I can't help it. Luckily I am always alone in the car.
37I do cuss a lot, but not around children (I'm also not around children very much anyway).
38I try to control it when I'm in public or around people I don't really know. But one of my peeves is when I'm around people who swear every second word, just because they can.
39umm it depends how mad I am.
40I curse plenty in public. But never around children.
41It really depends.
42I used to work on a boat tour with a bunch of guys, so I learned to swear in ways that would make a sailor blush.
When working there I had the foulest mouth, and I am surprised people even tolerated me...
Since then I've stopped so I have to be incredibly mad though now to swear in public.
Can't help it sometimes. I'm a sports fan!
43only when something painful suddenly happens. like i fell over. other than that, over use of cursing is a underuse of grammar. i think people like to show off they curse alot.
44I never swear anyway, I find it really unnecessary.
I can't stand poeple who yell, swear, or draw attention to themselves by speaking really loudly in crowded public areas...
45Mindful, but I do have slippage. I never swear in places where children are present - I try to be very award of that. The only time I swear occassionally at that is at the bar/club. There I feel like it is not a big deal and everone is of age etc. It happens sometimes...
46I REALLy like the point being brought up about certain words being assigned higher meaning than others.
In the scheme of things children are very perceptive and probably notice the fact that ppl. do this and then it becomes something cool/rebellious to say - hence they want to swear if course. It is just a fact of life. My mom never shielded me from violence or swearing - she just told me that it was not appropriate to do or whatever. I liked her approach, as like others have said it is something that they will have to live and deal with no matter what...interesting topic!
47I'm human and I slip at times; however, I do my best not to curse around my elders and children.
