Despite the recession and shaky economy, most Americans are optimistic about what lies ahead in 2009. A new poll shows expectations for better conditions were higher among younger generations with 64 percent of those under 45 having an optimistic view.
Younger Americans were more likely to adopt New Year's resolutions as well. More than half of those aged 45 or younger plan to adopt lifestyle changes next year, compared with 29 percent of those 45 or older.

3I don't know how optimistic I am about how much of the current disaster can be turned around in a year, but I'm definitely optimistic about the country's direction in general, and also that what we're going through now will serve as a great learning experience that may help us avoid these troubles in the future.

13I'm with Stephley I'm happy "an adult's about to start running the country", and it may get worse before it gets better, but I feel confident things are going to turn around within the next four years. I think Obama really has the drive to prove a blackman can not only be President but be a Great President. I also believe government parties we'll try harder to come together for better, less self-serving solutions...out of fear of further recession, if nothing else....at least one would hope.

19Amy, I think that does make sense - it's like being in the path of a big storm and being 98% certain you'll be okay: you can not ignore the 2% of you that wants to panic: but Star's right, Keep Swimming.
20We should all be optimistic. Now that Obama is elected, we don't have to worry about our house payment, buying groceries, paying for gas....
