A Russian professor who's been predicting the end of the US for years is starting to get attention. His argument? Immigration, the economy, moral degradation (whaa?) will trigger a civil war and the eventual breakup of the US. Oh, and he says there's a 45-55 percent chance this will happen by next year.
Maybe his timing is dubious, but the argument that's been disregarded for years in Russia is starting to be taken seriously. At least if you consider the state-run Russian media, where it's been getting considerable coverage, serious.
So if the US is breaking up, where will we live? To find out, read more.
- California Republic: Formed by the Western states, this area would be controlled by China or be under Chinese influence
- Texas Republic: A cluster of states in the Southwest would go to Mexico.
- Atlantic America: Eastern states, from South Carolina to Maine, will join the European Union.
- Central North American Republic: Northern Midwest and Great Plain states will go to Canada.
- Hawaii: The state will become a territory of China or Japan.
- Alaska: Putin will rear his head into Alaskan air space, making Russia the proud new owner of the great state of Alaska.
It's easy to laugh this off, until we're reminded that the French political scientist was met with laughter when he predicted the Soviet Union's collapse 15 years before it. Happy New Year!

Oh haha I saw this on the news a couple of days ago. Hysterical, in more ways than one
1Yeah, hysterical, I don't even know where to start! The deep south being part of Mexico, Alaska going to Russia, pretty hilarious.
2Why can't Canada have Alaska? Harper could just as easily rear his ugly hair... I mean head.
3Wait, I take that back. I don't want Palin running for any Canadian office.
4We all know Texas would be the first to go.
And California is just going to fall into the ocean, making their secession a non-issue.
I'm not sure the Central North-American Republic is going to get away with it though, especially if this big separation happens during football season.
5QUACK!!!!!
lol
6What an idiot... really, because Mexico can afford to take control of parts of the US.
7Hello "Jericho"
8Damn thanks for that laught Russian professor. A civil war, Mexico and Canada. Please, try again. I'd will die a thousand deaths before I'd let Canada take on the northeast.
9Oh sike, I won't mind the northeast being under European influence as long as it's France. I like their language and culture.
10Sorry, but this is hilarious. Maybe the US will have a big war, but he clearly doesn't understand the geographic, socioeconomic, and social makeup of the US.
11Also, why would the EU let people who live thousands of miles away and *aren't European* join?
12How absurd. I guess there's no news today.
13It'd almost be worth it to see the Midwest become Canadian and the South fall to Mexico. Payback's a b!tch.
1445-55% chance of this happening next year? Ha ha ha. This amuses me. Guess I should start preparing for living in the Texas Republic.
15This is interesting. I'd like to see his explanation for how he came up with this breakup. It would seem that even if the US was deeply divided on many issues, Californians would still fight to keep the right to go to New York City. A Civil War? Seriously?
16How will all the snowbirds retire in Florida if its part of another country?!
17And how does he define moral degradation? This guys is a state professor? What a joke!
18Oh... and not to mention I'd need to brush up (learn) Spanish.
19mydiadem - I guess they'd just have to change their citizenships to retire. That's gonna be a b*tch.
20Why would the different factions of the US join another country? Wouldn't we just form our own? I don't think this guy understands American mentality at all. If any invader came over here, the entire country would band together to get them out. I can possibly see a break up of the country down the line a while, but this scenario makes no sense whatsoever.
21I believe the chance for a strong government disruption sometime in this century is possible, but unlikely. If it does come to blows I think like so many times before we will skirt dangers blade and gather our ignorance as quickly as it spilled out.
22If we're talking payback, I'd rather see the Native Americans get their land back.
23This would more likely split along terms of red state/blue state IMO.
24huh. This is ridiculous. I don't see Floridians feeling especially close to those in Alabama. Enough so to say "Hey let's form our own country down here with Georgia and OK, LA etc."
I think the main point he forgot that would make this seperatist map unbelievable is migration. The fact that we Americans are always moving from one state to the next. And usually it is out of the region all together. From the south the west or from the west to the NE.
He is wishful thinking.
25I came in here for the lulz.
26The Texas one makes me laugh. There would be war before some of these Texans would accept Mexican rule of any kind.
27Haha Massachusetts and the Carolinas on the same side in a Civil War???? It didn't happen the first time, and I doubt it would ever happen. Oh silly professor.
28yeah... That'll happen.
29The texas one made me laugh too. This professor is a piece of work
30Texas to Mexico? How patently absurd... We'd be our own Republic again, darnit!
31This guy is certifiable. Why does anyone think a financial crisis would cause the US to split? Maybe if we were all socialists to begin with, oh wait....
32This guy is certifiable. Why does anyone think a financial crisis would cause the US to split? Maybe if we were all socialists to begin with, oh wait....
33This will make international travel much more reasonable for me! Score! Going to Mexico for spring break will require getting through Il. and Mo. haha! And yay for suddenly being Canadian!
34This is laughable
35"Why does anyone think a financial crisis would cause the US to split?" Have you seen people pissed off over money before UnDave? I don't think that (a) crisis will cause a government collapse either. However, if you look at other countries where economic turmoil has become the norm some of those populations have taken matters into their own hands.
36I have seen people pissed off over money. It's not the government that is to blame for our financial mess (completely), so I can't imagine how people would want to secede. I understand why the USSR fell apart, and that was because the government bankrupted the nation, combined with a desire by the people to control their own financial destiny. Communism died with that collapse for those people.
37Yeah this guy, def. nuts. Whether or not we have a civil war is debatable, since there have been several who have guessed such. But making every part of the united states to be part or another country?? What???
38And citizen, moral degradation is a hot button issue and I truly believe it could cause a civil was or request for secession, just not in the way this professor has depicted.
I love how worked up people are about this. I think it is an interesting theory - especially since this is the guy that predicted the collapse of the Soviet Union!
39It's an interesting and amusing theory. I like it. Though I think people are taking the whole 'become part of another nation' too seriously. It's probable that during a civil war, other nations would support the team the like best, and a region during warfare accepts help readily. However, American idealogy is way too prideful to do anything more than accept support during warfare and then set up their own small nations later.
And it is quite impressive how this guy predicted the Soviet collaspe way before it came down. I don't think he should be jested at so harshly when history has shown politics to be so unstable.
I think another one of many causes would also be the divide between liberals and conservatives, socio economic class levels, urban citizens and country citizens, etc. This could happen in the next few decades, and the US might be better for it. We have so many different regions with different interests. Dividing up our governance might help policies better represent what each area needs and wants. The whole state laws vs federal laws conflict has been a problem since the start.
40well coming out of college i always said that i wanted to work for the EU, and now i'll be living in an area that's going to be part of it
you have to wonder how people come up with these things though. seriously- it's so outlandish!
41The breakup of America? Oy.
I do see big changes coming, but I don't think a natural shift in power, policy, or position has to necessarily translate into "total collapse of everything."
42West Virginia and Tennessee are going to join the European Union? Dosen't sound right.
Anyone with rudimentary information about communism could predict the fall of the USSR. Not impressed.
