Ready to say adios to 2008? You are going to have to wait one whole second longer this New Year's Eve. The world's official timekeepers (who knew we had them?!) have added what they call a leap second to the last day of the year to help sync clocks to the earth's slowing spin on its axis.
The US Naval Observatory — the keeper of the Pentagon's master clock — will add the extra second on Wednesday in coordination with the world's atomic clocks at 23 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds Coordinated Universal Time (that's 6:59:59 p.m. EST). It's the 24th second to be added since 1972, when the practice began.
So take one extra second today to soak in all your accomplishments! And don't worry, when the fireworks go off, it's really time to sing "Auld Lang Syne" and lean in for your kiss.

Blink and you'll miss it, LOL.
1Cr@p, like this year hasn't already been long enough....
2Weird.
3I'm rather interested now on why the earth is slowing it's spin.
4I can't tell whether the shake I just felt was the earth wobbling on its axis, or if I'm just really hung over.
5Earthquake Jude?
6Just a little tremble. I think it was me.
7I always check out the US Geological Survey after a tremble...kinda cool to see what type of "activity" we're having.
8Speaking of earthquakes, did ya'll hear about the 6 earthquakes the Dallas area had a couple months ago? The geologists initially said it may have something to do with the amount of drilling that is occurring beneath us, but quickly retracted that. I still believe it has to do with the amount of shale drilling they are doing, whether or not the geologists were payed (or threatened) to say otherwise, is beside the point to me. I mean drilling caused a massive sinkhole in the Houston area earlier in the year. Apparently they incorrectly replaced what they removed with salt water. The idea that replacing shale, and natural gas, with salt water, just doesn't seem logical to me, due to the difference in consistantcies.
9why is there an extra second ?
