So maybe you're not too keen about drinking on your first date, but after you've been seeing someone for a while, you've probably shared a few drinks together. You can have a great time letting loose with your significant other over a bottle of wine or six pack of beer, but what happens when you get together with his parents? Alcohol can definitely ease tension and make you feel more comfortable, but too much could prove to be disastrous. So where do you stand when it comes to drinking alcohol with his parents?

Please. My not-yet-in-laws could drink me under the table, and are always trying to pour booze down my throat, as I'm not a huge drinker.
I don't drink, I would only drink what my body can handle, which is not much.
I don't drink, I would only drink what my body can handle, which is not much.
One cocktail or glass of wine, maybe two if food is involved. Anything more, I would run the risk if falling out of the stupid tree and hitting every branch on the way down.
I'd have one or two drinks, no more, and only if they offered.
One drink, and no Long Island Iced Tea either! Has to be something weak, and preferably with food!
His parents don't drink. I really wish they did.
The first time I went over to meet his mom she poured me drinks and kept them coming all night..poor lady ended up the worst from us all!
I'm not married, but my rule in the past with boyfriends parents has been to always have at least one drink less than the mother, but never enough to get me past slightly tipsy.
My fiance's family doesn't drink at all and my does. When I am around them, out of respect I choose not to drink either. when we are around my family we will drink modestly, but nothing out of control.
Actually I curb the drinking when Im around my MIL's parents, bc they dont drink, but we all dont really drink much around them. When they arent around its kind of a free for all- my MIL makes the most amazing bourbon slushies, my husband makes killer chocolate martinis. We dont get plastered drunk when we are together, but honestly we can handle more booze than your average person, we're Irish. We go up to their cabin in the mountains and after dinner there is board games and drinking and a lot of smack talking- its really fun. I really lucked out in the in-law department, they love me just like I was their own child and I love them to pieces.
I agree with fuzzles. One glass of wine, maybe two - and only if you're eating with it.
My boyfriends parents are muslim so they don't drink. But I would definitely wouldn't mind drinking with them. I think having a glass of wine is good but I wouldn't get wasted with them. That's just weird.
My in-laws drink way too much IMHO. When we visit our first stop is at the Navy Club to hang with them and at their home they make cocktails and make them strong. It is funny visiting my folks because they don't drink at all. My whole family really doesn't and didn't know how to react to my in-laws at our wedding.
I went to France with them all last summer - drinking wine was REQUIRED!!
I'm fine
with it, they're cool.
my future in-laws are French and Japanese hehe, so Wine and/or Sake are pretty much an required to be served
No seriously I drink until I know my limits and they're pretty cool people. They drink socially but not to the extreme
I'll have a few, but I'll maintain a pretty sober state.
I don't drink and I know my future in-laws are huge drinkers LOL. I remain the family's designated driver
I guess I'm lucky and I am really comfortable around my bf's parents. I will drink with them (and have gotten tipsy on occasion) but never drunk. It is fun to see them loosen up
Haha, I think it would be semi dangerous getting drunk, but drinking why not. Imagine getting drunk, then spilling all the thing you and their kid do together...in the bedroom. Haha, unless you're that cool I guess with your inlaws...it can be awkward
.
Both of my in-laws are deceased and had been for years before I ever met my husband. But if they were here I'd probably have a drink or two with dinner and that would be my limit. Anything more and they would definitely be on their own.I'm not much of a drinker and I never have been.
a definite do. it's the ONLY thing that makes the holiday get together bearable, lol.
We don't drink at my in-laws. They don't drink and tend to think that anyone who does is an alcoholic.
My husband and I do drink when we're at our house, or at a restaurant with his parents.
I'm not a big drinker so I would probably never help myself to anything but, my boyfriends dad has a bad habit of just handing me a drink whenever he makes one for himself. I usually just take a few sips and put it down after a while.
I would take the bf's lead.
My MIL and I are great friends and have no problem splitting a bottle when we're together!
My boyfriend's parents are very casual and laid back, and I've known them for many years so I'm comfortable around them. Drinking with them is never an issue but I know when it's an appropriate time to stop. I would never get drunk around them.
My inlaws don't drink - hardcore Baptists. But I'm not giving up much by not drinking around them - I like to drink but it's more at parties, not so much with dinner.
My husband will have a beer or two with my dad, which is about as much as my dad ever drinks. I think Dad likes having someone to share alcohol with - my mom never drinks either.
i've been with my boyfriend for awhile and i am very close with his parents so we go out to bars and restaurants all the time. they are very outgoing and friendly and they love to have a good time. while i don't have a problem drinking with them, i always watch myself because its never cute to get drunk or sick in anyone's presence, not just the potential in laws.
I don't drink very much so this wouldn't really pose a problem.
they are total drinkers. we have parties there all the time. i have drank with them tons of times, and at least once have been drunker than i should have. but normally i try to keep it within reason and i just get chatty but not inapropriate. it's hard when his mom is trying to give me shots and martinis and other all-alcohol concoctions
His parents do not drink. They don't mind if we do, but I really don't drink with them much. We do however drink it up with my parents!
lol my boyfriends mom has one glass of wine and is over her limit! She is so cute! She never drinks tho...and when we go out for dinner with her I am always the only one who orders a drink! It is weird!
I don't mind drinking around my bf's parents at all. Wine, beer, mixed drinks whatever. I mean I definitely watch myself but I have been drunk around them (not embarrassingly) and it's completely fine. Especially when playing board games and all of his siblings are drunk too. I don't think it's a big deal.
Wine or beer with dinner, maybe a gin and tonic once in a while, but definitely not more than two. My boyfriend's parents are British so they're used to drinking a lot more than I am... I know my tolerance is low and while a glass of wine is nice, more than that hits me really hard.
I'd take my cue from them - if they offered me a drink I would accept gracefully, but then nurse it for as long as I could manage. I like Sarah100682's suggestion - of having one less than his mother, haha! I will use that tip in the future
I suppose reversing the situation, my family go through quite a bit of alcohol on special occasions, I wouldn't want him to get totally wasted drunk, but quite a few drinks would be completely fine.
My boyfriend's parents are divorced. His dad is a recovering alcoholic, but the rest of his dad's family loves to drink! So, when we're out with his dad we both try not to drink too much just to be respectful. When we're out with The rest of that side of the family it's almost like we're going out with our friends! It's a lot of fun! One of the best nights we have ever had as a couple was with both of our moms! We took them out to dinner (and let them pay) then we went to a bar with some of my friends and we had the best time in the world! Our moms had only met a few times but this was a great way for everyone to loosen up and just have a blast.
