If NY Gov. Paterson appoints Caroline Kennedy to the US Senate, not only will she avoid an election (for now), but she will also dodge a requirement to file a 10-part, public report filled with details about her financial assets, credit card debt, mortgages, book deals, and any source of payments over $5,000 in the last three years. Theoretically, Caroline could disclose the usual information in a gesture of transparency; instead, she says she will wait to comply with disclosure requirements until after she is chosen as senator, if she is chosen at all.
Little is known about Kennedy's personal finances, except for the assumption that she is wealthy. According to the New York Times, while working for the New York City Department of Education, she declined a salary, which exempted her from disclosure rules. While I can't blame anyone for wanting some privacy, I'm not sure she'll find much working as a US senator.
Since she's going to release them at some point if she gets the job, do you think Caroline should disclose her financial records now for appearance's sake?

yes!
1No. It's not a gesture she needs to make: people who want to find fault with her will no matter what. If she complies when the law says she has to, that should be enough. No one should dump their personal financial information just to be nice.
2But isn't their financials part of what must be disclosed?
3I think it's a requirement to run for public office, but not if you are appointed. Should be the same if you ask me.
4First sentence of the post.
5It would be a good gesture, but by no means necessary or something to be expected. Like Steph said, if she complies with the law, then that's all that matters.
6I think that if she intends to run for reelection (assuming she is picked), it would be in her best interest politically. Yes, she only has to comply with the letter of the law, but wouldn't it be nice if our politicians did what was right, instead of just what was legal?
7It would be great if we all did that.
8I can't even believe she is the top pick... there are way more qualified people for the job. This is all publicity.
9She will probably be a big asset to the party.
10In any case, she is not receiving special treatment.
no, not for appearance's sake.
I agree that anyone who doesn't like her will find something wrong or something to criticize, regardless.
11I don't see what the big deal is. If she made a pledge to disclose her financial record if she is chosen to take the seat (not if she is sworn in) you see there is a difference we will still have the info before she takes office. I don't know why they're harassing her, sit back relax or trail another news story. When the Gov. announces his choice and it's Carolyn get in your news van make for her front door like a bat out of hell and say hey Carolyn it's time.
