Whether it's a prankster or a money-saver, more people have caught on to the notion of license plate cloning, or as high school students in Maryland call it, the "speed camera pimping game." The trick is to replace your license plate with someone else's number (preferably belonging to a lookalike vehicle) so when you speed by a red-light or speed camera, they get the bill (or bills adding up to thousands of dollars) in the mail.
In Maryland students have used a printer and glossy paper to print out faux license plates with numbers belonging to their frenemies. They then proceed to purposefully speed by the camera, pull over, remove the fake plate, and then chuckle at the thought of a ticket showing up at a rival's house.
While I'm sure the high school kids will get caught soon, especially since they use a camera right by school, professional license plate cloners sound more like thieves than resourceful pranksters.
Does the risk of identify theft make you think twice about speed cameras?

Well I don't drive so I'm not real concerned about speed cameras, I'm more concerned about people with time on their hands to think up stuff like this.
1Wow I've never thought about that. I don't drive now, but I do hope that this catches on. If it does it will ruin the validity of traffic cameras. Anyone could come into court and say it wasn't them. They'll have to either improve the system or can the idea. I'm hoping it's can it.
2The fact that this is possible is the very reason that traffic cameras are unconstitutional.
There is no ability to confront one's accuser, because it is a camera. And there is no ability to gather evidence in one's defense, because there is no way to know when you were caught doing something wrong.
3...and when those kids speed through a red light and smash into another car over a stupid prank i guess they'll learn their lesson.
4Why would this make me think twice about speed cameras? They aren't the problem in this story (even though i do loathe them). The kids aren't stealing the plate numbers from the photos coming from the cameras.
5Good points, Organic.
6The question is wierd, shouldnt it be "Is this post just filler? Or is it a real concern?"
7wow I never even heard of this before!
8I agree Steph, its scary the sh*t people come up with when they nothing to do.
Happy day, I agree with Organic!
9Plus I have heard that they increase accidents from people slamming on their brakes at yellow lights, increasing rear end collisions...instead of preventing accidents like they were intended.
10I guess it is really a choice, get taxes increased, or have to deal with something like this. State and city have to make their money some where!
