David Paterson, New York's Lieutenant Governor, took over. He is legally blind and is New York State's first African-American governor. When asked what lessons these characteristics had taught him, Paterson replied, "You never get to any level of leadership where your race is not a factor. You don't want to be the first; you want to be the first of many."
