The last time New Orleans saw snow was a white Christmas day in 2004, and the Southern city has only been painted white 17 times since 1850. But this morning residents woke up to as much as six inches of snowflakes.
Today marks the earliest date for snowfall in the city, and the rare weather found some unprepared. The snow halted bus services and flights out of Armstrong International Airport, and students at a few universities and schools are enjoying the freedom of a snow day.
Meanwhile in Houston, TX, snow fell last night, tying a 65-year record for earliest snow date. Check out these pictures from a very wintry New Orleans! Should residents worry about climate change, or just enjoy the Winter wonderland?

and its a balmy, 69 degrees here.
1I wish it was snowing here!
2It has been colder then it should be over here though! As long as we dont freeze Im cool!
There was a thread a while ago where we discussed how the discourse is changing from 'global warming' to 'climate change.' Here's a perfect example.

4That is a beautiful picture!
5You can have some of my snow momma tikita... there's lots to go around
6"There was a thread a while ago where we discussed how the discourse is changing from 'global warming' to 'climate change.' Here's a perfect example."
Too true.
7I'd rather be in your avi Bleached!
8I remember when I was 10 months and it snowed in MS, I have pictures with my dad and I (me trying to walk) walking in the snow. I bet they shut the city down.
9it snowed here on sunday and and today and it's like -24 degrees Celsius in other parts of the province, blech. the only good thing about snow is that is makes my skin paler.
10My brother texted me about this earlier and I didn;t believe him
11Much as I worry about climate change, when it comes to unseasonable snow I say enjoy it ... because I love snow. We (central NC) had our first snow on Nov. 21 - way earlier than I have ever seen it here, and it was beautiful!
Six inches is a lot, though. Pity the poor municipal works and cops - they're in for a rough few days!
CG, we're in the mid/high 60s here, too. That part of climate change (or weird weather or whatever) I don't like so much.
12that just goes to show what global warming is doing to the environment. we just had a little dusting in NJ last weekend - nothing to compare to 6 inches in a place that doesn't get it. the weird thing would be to see if south florida ever got snow. that would be a really big shocker!
13Mississippi girl here... Oddly enough it only sleeted/wintery mixed here. No snow piled up for us... just nasty and icy. Which is bad since no one in MS knows how to drive in these conditions. And it's really strange that two nights ago it was 60+ degrees and we were under tornado watches.
The weather has offically gotten freaky in the South.
14When will Florida start feeling some of this winter wonderland?
15star you're in MS?? Me too!!! I totally DID NOT get the day off for this wintery mess, though just about everyone else I know did. Did you?
16Ha... what a cowinky dink lawchick. Yep I'm in MS. Of course I didn't get the day off. That'd just be absurd.
17I think florida got some in 86 didnt they? last I heard! But I do hear its really cold over there!
18It's cold and foggy here in central CA. prob will snow sunday/monday and last time we got snow was 10 years ago. we are at 200 above sea level
19We've got 18 inches on the ground and more coming. I'm still waiting for all that global warming Al Gore promised me...
20I want snow!
lol
21I'm in Oklahoma and we occasionally get snow, but usually it's ice.
Unbelievable. And beautiful.
22Yeah, the South doesn't claim Texas and it's almost 70 here in NC! Grr I want to wear sweaters!
23Me too UnDave. Me too...
24I was looking foward to it this year UnDave!
I hate the cold...brrrr
25I will always be a miami chic.
Don't forget about Baton Rouge!! We're the bastard child of Louisiana, apparently, because if it doesn't happen in New Orleans, it's not news...
Baton Rouge was COVERED in snow yesterday! Some of the pictures I've seen don't even look like they were taken anywhere in the South...
Anyway, just had to speak up...
26And we wonder why we never hear "global warming" used anymore. It's become "passe". Now it's "climate change", which leaves it just open enough to not be embarassing to those who drink Al Gore's kool-aid because now we're headed into a cooling phase.
It NEVER snows in N.O.--that's so crazy!!
27I agree that this is noteworthy, but it's not like it hasn't happened in the past.
The article states, "The last time New Orleans saw snow was a white Christmas day in 2004, and the Southern city has only been painted white 17 times since 1850."
So... which of the 17 times since 1850 were caused by climate change, and which were not?
28Maybe someone's going to come out and say
29"My bad peeps, I meant its going to be really cold not really hot!"
ilanac13, it snowed in North Phoenix a few years ago. It's a sight to see to have film of snow falling against the background of saguaros.
30Kranky, 3 or 4 of those 17 have been in my lifetime, and I'm only 20. I don't know much about weather patterns, but I thought I'd just throw that out there.
31All that said, it was nice to have snow here. It was very pretty, but parts of the city shut down (no salt for roads, nothing to de ice the planes).
