The 2008 presidential campaign inspired a year of political expression and celebrities were no exception. Will.i.am remixed Barack Obama's landmark speech and spoke out at the DNC, Diddy said Sarah Palin "scares him" and Matt Damon called her VP nom a "bad Disney movie." Scarlett Johansson upped the Obama love by saying she was engaged to him. Meanwhile celebs like Heidi and Spencer, Ben Affleck, Brad Pitt, and Halle Berry showed support through quieter efforts and political t-shirts. On the small screen, Oprah kept her endorsement off air until after the election, but celebrated with a special tear-filled show and The View's Elisabeth Hasselbeck campaigned for McCain and Palin, calling the pricey wardrobe scandal "sexist."

well i have to preface this by saying that i really hated that there were so many celebs that were preaching to me. it was kind of too much and i think that the things that are important to them in this vote weren't the same for me.
anyway, i voted for ben - he was the least intrusive.
1You're gonna catch hell for leaving out Chuck Norris.
2I love Texas Ranger.
3where is the "none, I dont give a bleep about what comes out of these peoples mouths"
4none
5None of 'em. The only people in the country more out of touch with reality than Washington politicians are celebrities.
6I voted P Diddy because he's an effing tard, and I happen to enjoy laughing at people who are effing tarded.
7Nobody!! Celebrities should stick to movies and music or whatever they do as their job. I could give a flying rat's butt what they think and do not like the idea that they can actually influence young people.
8I heart Ben Affleck
9Seriously, where is Chuck Norris? What is wrong with you? Time to make a new list.
Besides Walker, I don't care for celebrities campaigning.
10I would think candidates from all parties would unite to shove Heidi and Spencer off like kids with cooties on the playground.
11I didn't even vote...I vote none. Whats the point..other than having more money they aren't different from "regular" people.
12I would had voted for Carrie Underwood, but she wasn't on the list. Oh yeah thats right because she believes the same as i do. Why would they want someone to vote for a candidate just because they said to? Lame.
13I didn't even vote, as a protest to their lameness!!
I don't see the issue, maybe they are just people who love politics?
I mean if I were a celebrity why would I be expected to be nothing more then a performing monkey?
All of us have jobs, some unrelated to politics, and we share our opinions and tell people what we think is right, we volunteer and participate in fundraisers - why can't they?
Just because they get more attention and their fame makes the message louder then ours why should that make them stupid or lame for sharing it?
14I don't think any of them, until they can go to a third world country, live there for a year as the natives, none of them actually have the heart. I mean, they travel to third world countries but stay in fancy expensive hotels with the native people cleaning their bathrooms for pennies. I don't have much respect for them, it's just a photo-op and honestly what little opportunities they take does not make a big change, it does not sweep us off our feet and make us feel like, yeah, damn it! Let's help rebuild that country, lets stop buying stuff that comes from sweat shops, lets boycott gasoline companies, lets stop wasting our life on credit cards, lets bankrupt the freaking execs that are making expensive vacations off our taxes, lets end the cruelty to animals, cows, chickens being caged up all in the name of money, our produce mostly coming from California only to be 'gassed' so that it can arrive picture perfectly freaking expensive in our kitchen and unholy unnaturally! No, none of them have made me feel passionate about these things.
15" it does not sweep us off our feet and make us feel like, yeah, damn it! Let's help rebuild that country, lets stop buying stuff that comes from sweat shops, lets boycott gasoline companies"
Is that their fault or the American publics? The sad fact is most Americans would not look twice at an African refugee if Angelina wasn't posing next to them. That isn't the fault of the celebrity. At least they are trying to put their fame to good use. I would much rather hear a celebrity go on about how lucky we are to be able to vote or which country genocide is happening in, instead of hearing about their love of a certain handbag.
16I don't really see the problem with celebrities voicing their opinions. If you disagree or don't want to listen because they're celebrities... than don't.
That being said, I think there's a huge difference between Natalie Portman and Heidi/Spencer... not just their political persuasion. Portman is informed and educated, Speidi are, well, Speidi.
Stephley, I second your Heidi/Spencer idea.
17I have a mind of my own so this doesn't matter to me but I picked Matt because he really did campaign.
18No it is not their fault. It's the American public making it a photo-op and editing out what they really want to hear. In the end, I don't think they sit in their mansions thinking, wow, I should really live a humble/modest life and live in a smaller house that is environmentally 'green', or wear clothes that are made here in USA instead of a sweat shop off of some remote island where they pack the workers in like fish in a tincan, they don't ban against clothing companies that make money off of them, yet in the sweatshops, those people who made that dress can hardly have enough to eat for that day. That is why it's not their fault. The idea that people actually wait around for someone 'famous' to bring attention to the daily news of life outside their cookie cutter white picket fence, such as the cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe, or the death of innocent Pakistanis at a wedding caused by US military, is pretty pitiful.
19I agree with lildorthyparker.
20Affleck always surprises me by being intelligent and funny, so I picked him.
21ben and matt! i voted ben tho
22Big deal--they have opinions, and they can share them or not. If you don't like what they have to say, then just congratulate yourself for not being someone who votes for someone based on a celebrity's opinion. Easy!
23P Diddy but only because his campaign blog videos were so ridiculous
24Matt, because he really put his feet on the ground.
Yup, nobody has a problem with the campaigning celebrity they agree with.
25Dunno about that, acyl--Scarlett Johannsen got on my nerves
I can't even imagine how McCain supporters must have felt about Heidi Montag's and Spencer Pratt's ringing endorsements of their candidate, though.
26Scarlett Johannson always gets on my nerves Jude. I think she's way over-rated.
27I don't like her face. Or her annoying wooden acting. Come on, Woody Allen! She has ONE FACIAL EXPRESSION!!!
Ahem. Rant over.
28will.i.ams it's a new day song...LOVE IT!!!
29Matt Damon, cause he's so intelligent and a wonderfully great actor...can you see my
for
him.
.
He also agrees with me, so that helps too
I don't know how you can leave out Chuck Norris considering how big of a deal he was in the campaign.
I'll say what I said before I think celebs are people and entitled to campaign for whomever they want. I think that individuals should make their own decisions no matter who is preaching to you, be it Jon Stewart, Heidi and Spencer, CNN, George Bush or Colin Powell.
30Jude, HF, watch "The Prestige" great movie, but Scarlett's accent is laughable - like the worst British accent ever.
I think she is pretty, but she can't act if her life depended on it, "Scoop" was painful to watch - but I managed, there was Hugh Jackman after all.
31Heh, Jude, I don't think Woody Allen's all that concerned with her facial expressions.
zeze--The Prestige was worth it for Bale. And Jackman. But mostly Bale.
32Celebrities are entitled to their opinions. It is up to us on whether or not we want to pay attention. They should, however, be aware of backlash. They may do more harm than good.
Scarlett, for example, was very enthusiastic about this campaign and her candidate. She talked about him in interviews and supposedly went door to door for him in the primaries. But I do not think her celebrity helped her candidate. In fact, she caused a minor scandal when she said the two exchanged personal emails. No one wanted JFK and Marilyn comparisons, least of all the Obama camp.
Also I would like to point on that on these boards I heard a lot of people complaining about Oprah, but not so many complaining when Hasselbeck hit the trail for Palin. So maybe there is something to that "not minding the one who agrees with you" theory.
I liked Will.i.am because of his songs, but I may have voted for Norris had he been included just because I find him so darn entertaining. Also Kelsey Grammer and SJP who worked the phones for their respective candidates would have been nice additions to this list. Hayden also ran a youth voting campaign that got a lot of attention. The cool thing about what she did is that she got all the press with out having to come out and say who she supported.
33"I heard a lot of people complaining about Oprah, but not so many complaining when Hasselbeck hit the trail for Palin. So maybe there is something to that "not minding the one who agrees with you" theory."
Good point!
34I agree with you Jillness, i didnt hear anyone complain about the fact that Hasselbeck hit the trail for Palin or that she wore a McCain t-shirt on the view during the campaign. Just imagine if Joy or Whoopi would have done the same?
35hayden p. did say who she was voting for and also did a funny or die ad about who stupid you would be for voting for McCain.
36Oprah is a way bigger deal than Elizabeth Hasselbeck. I don't think I even heard about her campaigning for Palin, and if I did hear it, I forgot it right away.
37Mich the Hasselbeck thing was a big deal because she brought back the whole wardrobe controversy after it was dead.
38None really. I think they are entitled to their opinions, but its not something I would take time to think about.
39What I loved about the interview with Matt Damon was that he didn't sound like "high profile celebrity" Matt Damon in the interview. He sounded like you every day, average voter, as he expressed his genuine concerns. His discussion wasn't elaborately scripted, and I really liked it.
