7I read about these hotels a while ago! I guess it's odd to us since we generally have more than a tiny studio for a family with kids, but Japan is so freakin' densely populated that this is actually the way the parents can get it on while not putting on a show for other family members (bleh)! And Crazy!

9If you are traveling in Japan, love hotels can actually be a pretty good deal. They rent in hourly blocks (1 hour, 3 hours, "half day", etc). While the 1 hour block during "primetime" (10pm) can be pretty expensive, if you stay out past 4am, you can check in for a half day with a special Daytime rate (their slow time) that is cheaper than a lot of regular hotels in touristy places. Checkout time for regular hotels is 10am anyway, so if you're going to be out late, might as well stay in a love hotel for 6 hours and save some cash. They're also pretty *ahem* "interesting" rooms with amenities like a recessed swimming pool IN the bedroom.

13I find it to be typical. When the society is conservative, people seek out different measures. I find it to be sad at the same time, though. Nonetheless, Hello Kitty and S&M NEVER EVER go together. It's like putting penguins and cross dressing or something.
