oh joy.
1Does Jeb think he has a chance of winning? Just stay away from the Presidency. The Bush name is sullied for a few generations now.
2Poor Florida - no one's ever going to take that state seriously.
3Okay she's gay, there's nothing further that needs to be said about that.
Nice of Stanford profs, and I'd rather wait to here the final offical results about Minnesota than numbers from either camp.
Oh god I hope he doesn't run! But then again if he does I can vote against him...Hmm I wonder which of our senators are retiring or which he's running against. I hope its not Bill Nelson, I love him; he's an awesome senator and went to my high school (50 years before I did).
4I wouldn't want jeb bush as my senator.
but then again I don't want arnold swartzenegger as my governor and there he is...
5People really dreaded Arnold and made fun of him, but I think he has done a better than ok job.
6Poor Stanford prez. Prices in the bay area are high, and he needs that full salary--NOT!
7Those extra 200 ballots they just found are helping out that Al Franken. Nothing suspicious going on here... NOTHING!!!
8$700,000 salary???? Oh no 10% how will I survive?????
9Why is anyone ok with anyone in the college system earning that much money?
I just knew Jeb was going to rear his ugly head at some point...
10Ohh No. No more Jeb for Florida. We do not want you anymore.
11"$700,000 salary???? Oh no 10% how will I survive?????
Why is anyone ok with anyone in the college system earning that much money?"
To be President of a private college is almost like being a CEO, it is a business that employs lots of people. So I don't see the problem in that respect. Now if your criticizing high wages in general then that is a different story.
I wouldn't hold George Bush against his brother. I don't really know much about him, but if he were competent then I don't see a problem.
As cool as it would be I have a hard time believing an openly gay person could be selected for the Cabinet in this country.
12Wow, Mary Beth Maxwell seems amazing. I would advise anyone to click on that link and watch her speech they have posted.
I'm lucky enough to work in the child care/education industry so I don't think I've ever realized how bad some people's work conditions are in America. Obviously people are on top of any condition that children might be in. It is a shame people are being fired for trying to form unions and that bosses are getting away with these crimes.
13My only experience of Jeb is from Lil' Bush. He he, he is a funny character on that show
14You would be amazed how much college administration even grammar school administration make.
15As a floridian i say "no" to Jeb. please No.
16It just seems the college system and politicians do a lot of complaining how it isn't affordable to go to college, and that it is a "right" for everyone to go, but then an administrator can make $700,000. And that is only the top guy. I could only imagine what the others make.
17And Jessie, I don't have a problem with large salaries, I love capitalism and private industries can pay whomever whatever they choose. But when they do take public funding, I think there should be different guidelines. Just as the execs in the big 3, you take public funding EVERYTHING gets cut.
Just curious Jessie are you ok with the oil company profit and execs salaries?
I wasn't aware private schools received public funding, I thought that was why my tution is so high and why the school is burdened with the need for grants and what not, but I could be very wrong. I'm not "hip" to all of the college financial workings. I
Hainan not really, I'm not a fan of large super salaries across the board, because I believe they draw away from every workers wages and can be an abuse of power, but that is why I said it would be a different argument. I just didn't see why you would pick on a private college's president versus anyone else.
18No one asked me, but I am wandering in anyway. I don't have a problem with college educators and administrators making high salaries. Their salaries should work exactly as all employees do in the market.
If students (or their families) are willing to pay high dollar for education, then so be it. I suspect that the financial downturn is going to cause a number of potential students to start looking at more affordable education, and the universities will have to adjust accordingly... either laying off staff, cutting capital projects, or cutting salaries. I assume that any adminsitrator worth his or her salt will make the hard decisions in a manner that is best for the school.
19Exactly Kraky, I wondered if had all of these huge companies needing bailouts had made adjustments would they be in the predicament they're in.
I receive full financial aid from my very expensive school with small loans, of course (the only time poverty and parntlessness ever came in handy in my life). My school promised me four years of their private financial aid (Reed Grant), I would hope cuts would be made before they broke that promise and left me out in the cold
.
20Oops I misspelled your name I meant Kranky.
21Oh Jessie- I forgive you, but only 'cause you agreed with me .
22"anti many things" Did he actually say that? GOP: We gotta be pro..er..more stuff. ?!
My goodness where HAS this little gem of a candidate been hiding?
23I think Dave's right about Jeb Bush. His opponents will be able to hold his brother over his head for years to come.
"I wondered if had all of these huge companies needing bailouts had made adjustments would they be in the predicament they're in."
Yep, exactly, Jessie.
24"anti many things" Did he actually say that? GOP: We gotta be pro..er..more stuff. ?!
See I saw that too and thought to myself...wow...not winning many smart points there Jeb.
25I'd rather see a high salary go to a college administrator than a pro-athlete or a pop star.
26TS I agree. But people can choose to go to a concert or to a sporting game. And people paying those high prices are whats makes those people think they deserve that money. Unfortunately the population has made everyone believe that they HAVE to go to college and just get some kind of degree, and so it really isn't a choice anymore. They are kind of incomparable.
27So, I only meant that as kind of a flip comment in passing but...
I...what? Are you trying to say we all get to choose to go to a concert or game but society forces us to go to college so we have no choice in that mattter?
28I guess to me it's like a commodity. (Gas, food, power etc) You really do have to go to college now. So Should people be ripping you off and making HUGE paydays? It was, I guess, kind of the devils advocate in me, as I believe people should be able to make whatever they want. That is capitalism, and I don't think we should regulate ANYTHING like that by the government. But it is kinda fishy.
29I reject your premise. Going to college is not the same as buying gas and food. Less than a third of Americans hold a bachelor's degree.
And I wasn't saying we should regular what college admins or pop stars make. Just that personally I value one much more than the other.
