President Bush's interview with Charlie Gibson aired last night, and Bush made it clear that he intends to leave office with his head held high. Reflecting on the highs and lows of his presidency, Bush concluded that it has been a "joyous" experience. Here are some of the excerpts:
- On the Iraq war intelligence: "The biggest regret of all the presidency has to have been the intelligence failure in Iraq. A lot of people put their reputations on the line and said the weapons of mass destruction is a reason to remove Saddam Hussein. It wasn’t just people in my administration; a lot of members in Congress, prior to my arrival in Washington D.C., during the debate on Iraq, a lot of leaders of nations around the world were all looking at the same intelligence. And, you know, that’s not a do-over, but I wish the intelligence had been different, I guess."
- On what he was unprepared for: "I think I was unprepared for war. In other words, I didn't campaign and say, 'Please vote for me, I'll be able to handle an attack.' In other words, I didn't anticipate war. Presidents — one of the things about the modern presidency is that the unexpected will happen.
- On how he judges his legacy: "The thing that's important for me is to get home and look in that mirror and say, I did not compromise my principles. And I didn't. I made tough calls. And some presidencies have got a lot of tough decisions to make."
- On Obama's election: "I think it was a repudiation of Republicans. And I'm sure some people voted for Barack Obama because of me. I think most people voted for Barack Obama because they decided they wanted him to be in their living room for the next four years explaining policy."
Considering that many in the media and numerous Democrats supported the war, do you think history will forget that Bush overlooked good intelligence and reports from the inspectors that concluded Iraq had no WMDs?

Dear Bush,
please explode now.
1As much as I did not like that government, I felt his answers here were more reflective and insightful than usual.
2Oh please. He's still deflecting blame and pretending to be this beacon of principles. He's disgusting.
3He's almost out of Office, can't we just cut the bull and talk straight to Cheney.
4I think it was a good interview, this is what he should have been saying this whole time, I adore him and respect him and honor his service to this country.
5I may not agree with Bush's politics, and I dislike a lot of the things he did in office, but I have always believed he was doing what he felt was right. I can respect that.
6Yes sir. You leave with your head held high - why should you leave in shame. Believe you did the best you could in the circumstances.
7yeah, and why don't you throw yourself a parade, too.
I'm sorry, but doing what you feel is right is not an excuse for anything. I'm sure Hitler felt he was doing the right thing. And I'm NOT comparing Bush to Hitler, I'm just demonstrating that the idea that you're respectable as long as you follow your heart is plain COMPLACENCY.
PLEASE.
8I was waiting for the hitler/bush thing in the same comment. you might not be comparing him, but to even use that as an example is strange.
9To be a Bush supporter is strange.
10I never understood putting Hitler or Russia socialist in a sentence or a comment but "not referring a person to that person.” Alluding to the person in reference to a historical figure or event is the same thing to actually comparing it’s just indirectly. Bush is no more Hitler than Obama.
11We get that you don't like Bush. But to say being a Bush supporter is strange is rude.
12in other words :drink:
13I don't understand why Bush keeps talking about the intelligence failure in regards to Iraq and yet our troops are still there.
Opps, we started a war with the wrong country...but we're just going to continue it indefinitely. What?? I hope Obama gets the U.S. out of Iraq asap.
14What should we do? Walk out and let the "bad guys" (I'm not necessarily talking terrorists, just bad people) take over the country and hurt the civillians? It's not like Saddam was a nice guy who was just misunderstood. He was guilty of killing thousands of people who disagreed with him. We're working to make any mistakes we've made in Iraq right. We're almost done doing it.
15Worse yet, if we rush out prematurely, they'll shoot the last guys to leave in the back. Even Obama has said we have to plan a SAFE withdraw situation and it may not happen as quickly as some people will like. We have to be safe and responsible, and even Obama recognizes that. The last thing we want to have happen is a post war vacuum of power like we left after WWI that caused people like Hitler to rise to power. Yeah, that's a smart idea. Let's just pull them out and see what terrorist takes over.. woo hoo.. sounds like fun!
16I take it someone was out of ideas for retort.
17I wish he would have apologized for grabbing so much power for the executive branch, dumping all over our civil rights and freedoms, having a blind eye on torture, and spending us into debt I'll have to pay off for the rest of my life while probably never seeing a dime of social security. Oh, and that medicare prescription drug plan. But what he said was a start.
18Yeah, 'cause I'm having trouble talking about my displeasure in the government. All of our civil rights have been eroded to almost nothing.
I agree with the spending, but that isn't his fault alone, although he did have the power to veto the budgets that came across his desk. Congress needed to do a better job of creating a budget and they failed.
19He should explode and I believe that if Bush told the absolute truth, he'd have to admit he didn't actually do what he believed was right, he did what he wanted to believe is right. Reasonable people don't look to different intelligence sources when the information they get doesn't match what they wanted to hear.
Liberty's question points out that Bush overlooked good intelligence that said Iraq had no WMDs.
20"many in the media and numerous Democrats supported the war"
21speaks volumes!
All of those media and democrats overlooked the same intelligence!
22And to Karlotta, I absolutely 100% believe that a president should do what he feels is right. I don't even understand how you can be criticizing that. Should he do what he feels is wrong?
UnDave just because you haven't personally felt the effects of the Patriot Act doesn't mean it hasn't stomped on the rights of many of us (I'm lucky enough to be one of those people that have experienced it first hand so I can be a little outraged). Your eye roll just shows you live a sheltered life.
Is the President not the decider? He didn't run on a platform of 'war' (actually the opposite, which people seem to forget) but he sure as hell ran on a platform of personal responsibility. Let him take that on without bringing Congress into the mix of this discussion, its what he seems to want to do via this interview to try to improve his legacy.
23I am soooo anti-Bush, but when I see him in interviews like this one I can't help but pity the man. I want to believe that Cheney was the evil-mastermind in this operation. Bush was just an innocent victim. Anyone else?
24And what "civil right" have you had stomped all over?
25I think it's important to note that our new President is a supporter of the Patriot Act and voted in favor of its renewal.
26Also all of this "I wish he would explode" business is a little juvenile.
27Yeah, it's usually not the most reasonable people who wish death on politicians.
28People survive explosions.
29I certainly wouldn't have wanted to be in his position these last 8 years. I do hope that he did believe in the things he did, whether I think they were mistakes or not.
30If you must know, and can't just take my word for it, from 2002 until 2006 I went through the greencard immigration process with my ex husband. I, a U.S. citizen, as well as him (from Ireland btw, because I'm sure you will say he was asking for it if he was from a Muslim country) had to suffer being detained, fingerprinting, constant hooping jumping while always playing by the rules. The Patriot Act gave them more ammo to be pricks (and trust me, I was well aware of policies before and after), and once you are on that grid it doesn't stop. Even after my divorce and well after the greencard process, it wasn't just him, it was me too.
And I have Muslim friends that have experienced much worse.
31If it means keeping me safe? then i am sorry, jump through hoops galore. I would expect it from any country who lost thousands like we have. But i would expect those whose jobs it is to follow the patriot act to behave like professionals.
My grandfather had to go through heck to get his citizenship back in the 40's. He was so frustrated by it that he jumped ship in the new york harbor , swam to shore, and hid out for a couple of days in my great aunts basement untill he went back and finished it.
32Its one thing for my husband to do it, but its another thing for me to be detained. I'm a U.S. citizen. And to be kept safe from what?
Unless you went through it or know someone that has I doubt you have any idea what its like to be detained for no reason besides that the officials are idiots that don't even know their own laws.
33I was detained for 4 hours at the Canada border trying to come back in the US because I didn't have my passport. Only my DL. They grilled me on balances of my banks accounts etc... No biggie for me. It was just to keep the US safe. I just know better now.
34like i said, the people whose jobs it is to enforce? need to be professional.
35"People survive explosions."
MSucre I completely agree with you..the guy seems like such an idiot I wouldn't think of it any other way. His interview was good but he could have been a little better.
36It's just tactless and classless to express your dislike for a politician by wishing them physical harm. It's not funny and it's not acceptable.
37to be elected two terms, he must be smarter than you think.
38mydiadem - what was the context in which you were detained? (ie: Traveling between borders, etc...?)
39Hmm..last time I checked candidates dont elect themselves...but in bush's case you might be right.
40This man, who can't even open his mouth without saying something stupid, is an embarrasment. Sorry if that offends people on here. Just my opinion.
people who have a problem with Bush, comparing him to Hitler, wishing for his death, saying he's disgusting? How childish! Shame on you. This man loves America and has done his best for this country. The decisions a country makes, no matter what Jon Stewart has taught you to believe, do not rest on the shoulders of a single man. Many many men and women are actively involved in our government and help make those decisions, it's called a democracy. But I'm sure you could've done a better job as president, right?
41How are we safer? What happened in Mumbai could easily happen anywhere - and Americans have become more likely targets in the past eight years, thanks to the Bush administration. It's very foolhearty to feel complacent that since you're willing to give up civil liberties you're definitely getting something in return.
"to be elected two terms, he must be smarter than you think."
42Or he's more corrupt or our fellow Americans are less smart than we thought.
thats two now calling people who elected Bush president idiots..anyone else wanna have a go? Cmon, its now or never, he will be gone soon.
43These are the same Americans that just voted in Obama...hmm?
44CG, it's sort of funny to me that somebody would say Bush was elected by idiots. Don't they realize that those same idiots elected Obama, too? As far as I can tell, idiots are deciding most of our elections.
45Hainan, but I wouldnt call them idiots. they exercised their rights as americans and i respect that.
46Steph- the attacks in Mumbai were suspected. The government of India failed to do anything about it. So I think that type of attack is less likely to happen here since our government seems quick to act on intelligence. I just think that if it were that easy to attack us, why hasn't it been done in 7 years?
47Haha, Hainan got there first.
48Yes krae, I would say without hesitation I probably could have done a better job as president and the people I voted for would definitely have done the job better.
You can all stop with your sanctimonious chastising of people for (you claim) wishing for Bush's death and comparing him to Hitler. a) We know too much of what most you have said about other people in the past to take your piety seriously and b) you're stretching what we said in order to give yourselves a platform.
49CG- I never said they were idiots. I was just questioning the logic of the previous statement. To say that the ones that voted in Bush were idiots (as was said in a previous comment) then the same would be true for the current election as well. I simply don't agree with that logic.
