This weekend the New York Times ran a story about the plight of the local news anchor. Apparently due to the current economic situation and need to cut spending, some cities have realized that it simply costs too much to keep veteran local anchors with extremely high salaries.
According to a study cited in the article, slightly over half of American households still watch local news over big network news or the Internet. There's always something more personal about inviting the local news anchor or sports reporter into your home around dinnertime every night. Plus, local news stories can be the most personally interesting, heartwarming, or YouTube sensational of all. That said, with the Internet and network newscasters with nationally famous faces and personalities, it's understandable that the slightly antiquated local news guys are facing a rough time. So what do you think, would you be sad to say goodbye to your local nightly news team?

I personally cannot stand ANYONE on my local news channel. All of them stink.
1I used to work in news, and they would have occasional cuts, but it seems like it just keeps getting worse. So much for local journalism.
2I LOVE local news. I'm in Boston and am hooked on Channel 7. It's like a soap opera, watching who's in the field and who's at the desk, who gets the prime time weather man spot etc. I love it! And the evening muck-raking stories, those are so entertaining. I'd be so sad if my evening standbys and my morning friends got all changed up. Keep local news!
3I'm not attached to the local NYC anchors yet since I've only lived here a short time. But I still know many of the ones I grew up with DC, and I wouldn't like to see some of them go.
4In theory, I'd be sad to see local news go - someone should be covering city council and schoolboard hearings. In reality, local news does so little real news, and so much crime, that it's made itself useless. I used to work in DC local news and know that I and my colleagues were very frustrated by decisions to cover stories based on who could sue us, who advertised with us, and what the boss thought people would discuss around the watercooler.

7I would not even realize they were gone, I never watch local news, I get my news online 99% of the time, checking national news sites and local newspaper websites.

14I love the local news early in the morning. But really, does one market need 4 stations, 4 weather people, 4 traffic people, 8 anchors? Saying the same thing?

16In LA yes, I would have missed the FOX11 group. In Portland no, the stories are ridiculous and the anchors are beyond hokie.

18I'd miss my morning news team on WGN. They are great and I'd be sad if they were gone...especially the cute sportscaster. I like sports to begin with, and getting sports news from someone cute is just a bonus.

That's a good thing, no? With all the bad news(since that is what the majority of tv news is) we get, I consider a boring day a good day. Hahaha. I love Portland. Beautiful green city.
20Dennis Richmond!!! He was hands-down one of the most talented and charismatic news anchors I have ever seen. He will be greatly missed after his retirement from KTVU/Channel 2 news this year.
After all, I grew up watching him on TV relaying the latest news night after night after night
as a kid. 40 years of exceptional journalism, news reporting and anchoring one of the best news broadcasts in the Bay Area, not to mention the U.S.!

24local news shows make me ashamed to have studied journalism. like stephley said before, they don't even cover anything worth covering anymore. just crime and weather.
25Local TV news in Los Angeles is HORRIFIC! I'm a journalist (for a magazine, thank God). I can't watch the news here -- the women look like model/actress rejects; the older female reporters look like sad Beverly Hills trophy wives pumped up with collagen, boob jobs, hair extensions and Botox; all the men have hair plugs; the news itself is never pertinent, or interesting unless there's a car chase or a fire, or something. It's always about stupid stuff.

27Yes bluesarah, pretty much everyone, and Flyhunnie I'm glad you said it - I moved out here from DC and I couldn't believe LA is a bigger market. But - a lot of the reporters get bit parts in movies so I guess the indignity of being on their crap shows seems worth it.
