Barack Obama is firing away seven pages of detailed questions to wannabe presidential appointees, but one inquiry has gun rights activists upset. The question states:
“Do you or any members of your immediate family own a gun? If so, provide complete ownership and registration information. Has the registration ever lapsed? Please also describe how and by whom it is used and whether it has been the cause of any personal injuries or property damage.”
Politico reports that the Obama team says it just wants to verify legal ownership of firearms, but others accuse Obama of potentially denying employment based on an applicant's gun ownership.
Do you think Obama is putting Second Amendment rights in the line of fire or just trying to avoid embarrassing situations (think Dick Cheney shooting a man in the face)?

I hope he is just being thorough.
1Think Obama's support of the DC handgun ban. Yeah, I think gun owners and 2nd ammendment advocates should be worried.
2Who's been denied a job after answering yes to the question?
3There have been past cases of government officials/employees getting in trouble for having guns that weren't properly licensed, so this doesn't seem an unreasonable question, unless you're looking for a reason to question Obama.
I don't see a problem with this. If the question was just "do you own a gun?" and stopped there it would be suspicious. Maybe it's just a question about responsibility.
4I'm all for gun rights, but this is not my administration. I feel about like I did about the Lame Duck Rules yesterday.
Obama's record shows he is not in favor of broad gun rights, so I am not suprised that he wants to make extra sure his political appointees have followed the law. It's his judgement that's on the line, and I can't blame him for wanting to be thorough in this matter.
5Considering how thorough the rest of the appointee application/vetting process seems to be, I don't think there's anything particularly odd or ominous about this. Just like all those questions about whether a candidate has ever said anything on the Internet that might potentially come back to bite the administration in the butt, this strikes me as just another effort to prevent future embarrassment.
6i think it's a valid question. he's just covering his bases, and it's a legitimate way to check if the person owns a registered gun.
7i think that he's just making sure to be complete in his vetting process. i don't think that it's going to keep someone from getting a position if they are the best person for it.
8AI agree with the comment that it doesn't just say " do you own a gun" so in this instance, he is probably just being thorough. Although I don't believe it's all that valid of a question. I think he is being hyper sensitive in making sure no one gives him a bad name... probably something he should have done at the start of his political career. which I find funny that he is doing it now that he got elected... but anywho
9I think they are just trying to be thorough. They don't want anybody to have anything in their background that could come back to bite the Obama administration in the butt. If a gun rights issue comes up, and it turns out that some one on his staff has a less than stellar history with guns (like owning unregistered guns or letting registration lapse)that would reflect badly on him.
I don't think people should be concerned unless it is proven that he is rejecting people for owning guns
10Well, I'm guess I'm out of the running for a job with his administration. We have several that are not registered due to the potential permanent assault weapons ban. I don't know what the rules are in all states, but you don't have to register your guns here. In fact, there are NO records kept as to the firearms purchased here.
11MM, where's 'here'?
12Washington state.
13I think it's Federal laws regarding not keeping the purchase information on file, but as far as registration goes I think that might be the state? I'm not sure, I get so mixed up on who regulates what!
14Ha! My "Twilight" crazy daughter was asking why we can't move to the Pacific Northwest - now I have a reason better than mom hates rain!
15There you go, glad I could help! I'm sure you are a very lovely person, but I do what I can to keep more people from moving here and driving up the price of our real estate, complaining about the rain, and refusing to drive faster than half the speed limit when it starts sprinkling.
16And I would SO whine about the rain and slow down! Isn't it great to get along so well?!? (You might want to buy some silver bullets, apparently your neighborhoods are invested with undead.)
17"Who's been denied a job after answering yes to the question?"
I agree with Steph. There is no reason to worry or get upset just for worries sake. Let's just all give this man a chance and see what happens. And you all know how I felt about Obama, but I think we should all grab our big erasers and clean the board. I really don't want the next four to eight years to be like the last eight. Constant bickering and worry before anything has even been done. Obama being blamed for things he can't possibly be responsible for, etc. Anyone with me on this?
18worries = worry's
19I am, GS. That was very well said and classy
20I'm with you too!
21Well, I'm a classy dame!
22Dude better appreciate what a classy dame he's got
23He does. One thing about that man is he knows when to say that he appreciates me. He knows how to make a big, house of a woman feel good about herself right now! Marrying or not marrying the right person is so important to your future happiness. I hope your guy realizes what a gem he has too.
24He says he does, but I don't know how seriously I should take his words when he's cowering in the corner trying to hide from me
25He knew what he was getting when he chose the A of D above all others!
26Yeah, that's true.
27Just a little act of covering all his bases!
28As a regretful NRA member tired of constant pleas for money, I believe Obama in in cahoots with the NRA to help them raise money from conspiracy nuts and those who are generally paranoid.
