I was going to ask if you care where Sasha and Malia go to school. Or, guiltily, if we should care. But the truth is I'll read anything — any and all personal details of the Obama move to the White House. The schools. The puppy. Is grandma coming? Make no mistake about it, I want to know. All of it. And over 500 results on Google News — published this weekend alone — for what school the Obama girls will attend tell me I'm not alone.
It all sounds like a book I would have read when I was 10: Moving into the White House with the first children (somebody get on that!). But even now, is it any different than reading Pop? Consuming the most ordinary details of people with the most extraordinary lives. It's fun.
But it’s not the details we’re interested in. Not unless Georgetown Day School, Sidwell Friends, and Maret mean something to you — and to Washington parents looking to boost the prestige of their children’s school, they do. We’re interested in the fantasy, in living vicariously. What it must be like to be 7 and 10 years old and moving into the White House. It's an escape. Is there anything so wrong with that?

Back when Bill Clinton was elected President, the same sort of fervor was going on around the District. Everyone was interested in which school they were going to enroll Chelsea. As I was still of elementary age, I'm not sure how "national" the interest was, but I do know that at one point some folks from the Clinton camp did visit my school in regards to enrollment. It was very exciting.
1It does sound like a children's book, doesn't it?
2I think a private school where the girls will be protected by people who are used to the press is the best idea.
I'm annoyed by all the jokes about the idea of Obama's mother in law moving in with them. Providing the girls with stability is most important: they're leaving friends and family and going in to a world that few people they know (now) understand. Grandma could focus on them while mom and dad adjust. Grandparents are incredibly important to today's kids - I see plenty of them dropping and picking up at school every day - and to belittle what they offer is ridiculous.
3Stef, there are jokes about the M's mom coming. Wow, I haven't heard that one. I really don't think it matters, it's their decision. What they think is best for their children.
4THe Obama's and any first family, especially one so well-received, do set an example for people around the country.
5I think private schools would definitely send the wrong message.
We need more support and more faith (by which I don't mean religion) back in our public schools!
well it's a tough call though, because they have to ask themselves if a public school can offer the security the kids will need because of their high profile dad? i think it's probably safer for the girls to go to one of the private schools the senators and congressional reps send their children too. a school where the teachers and support staff are able to accommodate the schedules and sensitivities of the children because they are in the public eye. this is a really important decision for these girls.
i am interested in which school they choose, and the public reaction to it. i don't think anyone should judge whatever choice the obama's make. they know the needs of their children. i voted for mccain, but the school decision is a family decision and people need to respect that.
6Bella, of all places, I saw them joking on Fox about Obama's mother in law. I thought they were into families, but apparently, only some families.
7I dont care where they go.
8I'm not a fan of private schools, and especially as a president to not put your own children in the system is a bad call. The Secret Service is the same, whether they're at a public or private school, so I'm hoping Obama puts them in public school!!
9DC public schools are the worst in the country. I'd be pretty surprised if he sent his kids to them. But who knows.
As for being interested in this stuff, it sounds like you are trying to justify it for some reason. If you like reading about other people's lives, you do, if you don't, you don't. I don't think it makes anyone a good or bad person.
10There wouldn't be a whole lot of people reading and commenting on this website if it was bad to take an interest in others' lives
11I for one would be downtrodden if i didnt know what lindsay had for breakfast lunch and dinner everyday.
12I can answer that question for ya: vodka and coke. Not the soda
13Personally, I can't live without at least one daily update on how Jennifer Aniston continues to be wonderful and beautiful and special and great as she makes her rounds to her area's restaurants and beaches.
14I think they should do what is best for more Malia and Sasha. It's a bad call to put your public (political)image ahead of your children's needs (educational and safety). The Obama's job is to do what is in the best interest of the girls, nothing more.
Access Hollywood had an interior designer design rooms for Malia and Sasha.
15I have a sister-in-law who works at a private school like that in Chicago. As much as people will use this against Obama (Not sending the kids to Public school) I think it's the best idea. There are schools that are designed to protect the kids.
16"Personally, I can't live without at least one daily update on how Jennifer Aniston continues to be wonderful and beautiful and special and great as she makes her rounds to her area's restaurants and beaches."
You forgot about her "Daily Angelina Thought" and "Daily Rumor De-Bunking via Oprah, of all places".
17Oh, and regular Speidi updates
18I have not seen one episode of "The Hills" and am amazed that people can become famous for...doing nothing?
19Yeah, I hate that kind of reality TV. Apart from everything else, if I wanted to see a bunch of idiots having vapid conversations, I could just...I don't know...go to the mall.
20
I've overheard so many vapid conversations on my bus/train routes. My last favorite one was
from a girl who--loudly--wanted the whole bus to know about her wedding plans.
(One guy
even turned around and actually
'd at her, which was hilarious).
21You should've heard the two idiots sitting behind me at the DMV yesterday. My God...everyone within 10 feet of them could hear them going on and on about how one of them didn't want anything to do with some girl because she cost him $200 a week, but yet he did kind of want something to do with her anyway, and also it was his birthday and he was feeling like it was the weekend and wanted to just go "kick it at my boy's house and drink some beer and sh!t."
22Sorry for going off-topic. I couldn't resist.
23I sees we got us a cupla hijackers here

25The hills? it must be important every single Sugar branch has a story on it daily, including Yum....
26Sending the girls to a private school will not send the wrong message. Let's be real here if they go to public school random people could easily walk onto the campus (b/c its public), S.S. would be an imposition, they would have to do a whole bunch of sh*t to make it even a little realistic for them to go there. It's not about sh*tting on public schools its just not safe enough for them to go there. They already go to a private school now I definitely don't see what's the big deal.
27MTV has launched so many useless celebrities' careers
28For elementary and middle school and even high school I think the secret service could handle the threats, but socially once they reach teenage years (if he is in office for a second term) I think the girls would be better of in a private school. Going through puberty and discovering one's sexuality and beliefs shouldn't be tabloid fodder.
29wadewifey, do you think SS is going to be any less involved if they go to private school?
30I can't believe that show is still on. I used to watch Laguna Beach when I was 15. It was cute, the kids lives seemed fun, normal, and relateable. I even knew a few of the kids on the show. I was heading off for college a year after they were. I haven't seen the show recently, but it seems pretty tacky. While I like the show I thought it was temporary. I can't believe they've been on for 5 years.
31I think the most important thing is the girl's safety. There have already been a lot of violent acts commited by hate groups, and this would affect not only Obama's daughters, but puts off of the children they go to school with at risk.
I think private school would have greater ability to protect the children, and to restrict who comes on campus.
Of course, I don't know anything about school regulations and security on this level!
32While I like the show = While I liked the show
33The only Hills exerpts I have seen are from The Soup. Creepy flesh colored beard. Dead behind the eyes. That is all I know!
34Private schools have some elements of security in place. Knowing a little about the DC school system, the girls should definitely go to Private School!!! I went to a private school in MD and now am working there part time and I think a private school education is amazing if you can afford it. Or get a scholarship.
35Private schools in DC also are more savvy about handling the press than the average public school administration, and frankly, so would a lot of the families the Obama girls would come in contact with.
36I can't imaging putting the first children in a public school. It just doesn't seem safe enough.
37I would send my kids to the best schools I could afford to send them to. Period. And anyone that disagreed with me giving my kids the best education I can can kiss my you-know-what.
38It also doesn't seem fair to the other children. If the girls go to a school with other kids of politicians, dignitaries and embassaries then it will be more every day things for these children. The public school kids would be overly distracted by secret service, press, etc. It would be too disruptive, in my opinion.
39"Creepy flesh colored beard."
I love Joel McHale!
40Me too!
41"If the girls go to a school with other kids of politicians, dignitaries and embassaries then it will be more every day things for these children. The public school kids would be overly distracted by secret service, press, etc. It would be too disruptive, in my opinion."
sounds like "classism" to me...
42if you want to say that the private schools are better than the public schools, that's fine, but just say it. let's not skirt the issue and kid ourselves into thinking it's another reason. clearly, the real issue is that people think/know that private schools are better, but no one's really comfortable with the reasons why. that's why people are so interested in the obama decision on the matter.
43Are you serious?
44I don't know about anyone else, but I'm perfectly fine to say that I think a private school would be better for the girls, as the private schools where politicians' kids commonly go would be better equipped to handle the unique issues caused by having the children of such high-profile parents attending.
45I am a product of private schooling!
46I mean... they're in private school now, I don't see what the big deal is. And even the private school they are in now does not seem to provide adequate security, despite intense secret service presence. They can't fully control who comes and goes in such a school, so I think that it is beyond reproach if the Obamas choose a private school where security is a top asset. Protect those cute Obama babies!
47I get really tired of hearing this they think they're better than us bullsh*t. Get over yourselves! This is not about eating caviar and drinking cristal. It is about the safety of their daughters. I've been to both private schools and public schools. Private schools are smaller and have more security. It's easier to keep track of who is supposed to be there and who isn't. The Obama's should do whatever it is that they feel they need to to protect their daughters. If this means sending them to private school so be it. If it means hiring ninjas to shadow them so be it. Whatever they have to do to give themselves peace of mind. No one has the right to judge this situation. They will be the most high profile children in the world. Anyone who tries to turn this into an issue of classicism is highly mean-spirited.
48"Get over yourselves! This is not about eating caviar and drinking cristal."
49I mean *classism
