Ann E. Dunwoody became the first woman ever to achieve the rank of four-star general in the US Army on Friday, after 33 years of service. At the ceremony Dunwoody, 55, said she is shocked to make history in a male-dominated military. She said:
"Thirty-three years after I took the oath as a second lieutenant, I have to tell you this is not exactly how I envisioned my life unfolding. Even as a young kid, all I ever wanted to do was teach physical education and raise a family. It was clear to me that my Army experience was just going to be a two-year detour en route to my fitness profession. So when asked, 'Ann, did you ever think you were going to be a general officer, to say nothing about a four-star?' I say, 'Not in my wildest dreams.'"

There are only 21 female general officers in the army, most of whom are at the one-star rank of brigadier. It was not until 1970 that the army had its first female one-star.

Before I watched the video and even before I read the article all I did was read the headline and tears were flowing down my cheeks. I tell this month has been too much I think it's all hitting me today cause this has turned me into a basket case, lol. I am so proud and so happy for her. When I pull my self together I might come back later and say something more eloquent. I need my coffee, see what happens when I role out of bed and don't have my coffee.
1This is so so so so so so cool. We are in such a special time right now.
2That's so amazing.
3When I watched the video yesterday, I got so excited. When I was interested in joining the Navy when I was younger, my goal was to be the first 4 star general in the Navy and I had boys tell me its not possible. But what do they know.
4Good for her, that is so exciting! I feel like so many barriers are being broken lately, it's nuts! I hope things like this give hope to people who are still fighting discrimination that it is possible to break through it.
5I am so excited by this news! I am so proud of her - even though I don't know her! I have a huge smile on my face!
6I agree MM!!
This is amazing. I'm very proud of her.
7Awww...so many barriers broken in just the past month! Yay for making it to the top General Dunwoody! This just brings a huge smile to my face. I am really proud of her even though i never heard of her until yesterday morning.
8I love it!
9I agree with Harmony France.
10I'm so happy for her and for our military. Military women are so special for taking the plunge and serving their country, despite the military's demographics, and General Dunwoody is a wonderful inspiration and a true testimony to the expanding importance of women in the service.
11You go, girl, er, I mean general, sir, um, I mean ma'am.
12Good for her!! I know she's American but my eyes were telling me she looked German so I was surprised when I watched the video and heard her speak.
What an amazing accomplishment for her and for all women!
13Congrats General Dunwoody!! It is great to see barriers being broken.
14i think that this is very telling that there are changes going on and that we are evolving. it's been a hard struggle for women in just about every aspect of their life - especially in the military and i think that it's wonderful that she has this honor and other women in service can look up to her and have the same aspirations.
15This is absolutely outstanding. She EARNED it and she DESERVES it.
16Congrats to her!
17Congradulations General Dunwoody! We are indeed living in exciting times!
